FLASH: At the deadheaders celebration in the garden, Marylou Coffman won the rose painting donated by Charlie Hiers. Retiring Rose Garden volunteer coordinator, Carol Poe, drew Marylou s wining ticket from a hatful of entries. Congratulations, Marylou! ORGANIC ROSE CARE & vegetables too! Nelson Mitchell was the guest speaker at our March meeting. He spoke about growing roses (and vegetables) organically. Here is his magic recipe for a combination organic and fertilizer spray. Spray weekly, between 10am and noon, when there is no wind. This is for one gallon of tap water: 1 tsp vinegar, 1 tsp Cholox bleach, 1 Tbsp liquid dish soap, 1 Tbsp soda, and 1 Tbsp of either Miracle Grow or Rapid Grow fertilizer. Mix well. For powdery mildew, cut off the infected parts, and discard in a paper bag. Be sure and wear protective gloves and long sleeve clothes when spraying. If you do use chemicals, be sure and carefully read the directions on the labels yourself. Don't rely on other peopled to tell you what to do! (That's good advice for most any situation!) One of our other members said she uses this spray on her roses as a fungicide. Spray a gallon of water per bush mixed well with 1 Tbsp bleach, and 1 Tbsp baking soda. What do you use instead of chemicals to treat your roses organically?? Please share with us. 3 Tool Tips by Cindy Jepsen Feed Me I m Hungry!!! by Mike Jepsen How are your knees? Does your back hurt? This is the time of year when we are down on our hands and knees and all bent over trying to get the upper hand on the weeds and grasses that invade our rose beds. For years I suffered with knee and back pain until I discovered the wonderful world of kneeling benches and kneeling pads. This is a kneeling bench from Walmart. It has a padded foam seat, steel construction, and folds flat for easy storage. What I like best is that you can sit on it or you can turn it over and use it for kneeling. In the kneel position, you can use the legs to assist you in getting up. It s about $ This is a kneeling pad from Target. It is made out of a thick, dense foam and is very comfortable over a variety of surfaces. It keeps your knees from getting wet, sore and dirty. Price is under $ These are adjustable kneeling pads from Fiskar. A more upper end knee protection, these are about $12.00 but you can spend up to about $30.00 on other brands. Some even come with gel pads that help absorb and distribute pressure away from the kneecap. I find these helpful if you are moving around a lot in your garden and especially if you are in and out of tight spaces. Make sure you try them on before you buy; if they don t fit well they can slip around or cut off your circulation and be very uncomfortable. You can find them at your local home gardening stores. This month s article is on the secondary plant nutrients; the so called minor-major nutrients: calcium, magnesium, and sulfur. Calcium is an essential part of cell wall structure and must be available to create new cells. It holds cell walls together and makes for a sturdy and healthy plant. Calcium is present in our soils in central Arizona but is usually tied up and not available for plant use. How do we unlock this problem? You will need to continue to read this article to find out! Magnesium promotes chlorophyll formation and helps to produce greener foliage and healthy disease resistant plants. Magnesium also serves as an activator for many plant enzymes that are needed to create growth. Sulfur has two purposes; it is a raw material for amino acids which are nitrogen containing organic compounds used to create protein, an essential part of living matter. The second use of sulfur is probably more important for us as we try to grow good roses. Sulfur lowers the ph of our soil. Our soils here in the valley average 7.8 to 8.4 which is alkaline. Roses do best at a ph of 6.0 to 6.5 which is slightly acidic. Do you remember that problem that I mentioned above where the calcium is tied up in the soil? We can use sulfur to unlock the calcium tie up. Before I go any further, let me tell you another way of saying calcium tie up CALICHE!!! Now you probably get the picture better. There are two forms of sulfur that we can use; soil sulfur or a water soluble sulfur. Soil sulfur can take up to three years to completely break down. Water soluble sulfur like Dispersul or Tiger 90 takes approximately 6 months to break down. For those of us that believe in instant gratification, or want to solve our problem more quickly, use the water soluble form of sulfur. April 2010 Rose Lore Page 3
4 NEW ROSE Double Take by Marylou Coffman, Consulting Rosarian Double Take is just one of the new miniflora roses we have had from Frank Benardella. It is a beautiful rose red with a white reverse. The rose produces exhibition quality blooms and they are mostly singles, but sometimes can have clusters of blooms. Each bloom has around 25 petals and the petals are beautifully scalloped. It has a mild old rose fragrance. The foliage is a wonderful semi-glossy dark green. The dark green foliage and red and white blooms make this an outstanding rose in the garden or anywhere else. It is medium in size, an upright bush, growing to about 30 inches height. It can be grown in the ground or in a pot. Double Take can also be used as an exhibition rose or as a cut flower. It is an excellent garden rose and will do well in the garden, or as a container rose. This rose was hybridized by Frank Benardella in Parentage of this rose is Baby Boomer, another Benardella rose, and Timeless, a hybrid tea rose, hybridized by Keith Zary for Jackson and Perkins. This rose can be found at several of the miniature growers such as Two Sisters, Rosemania and others. COMING SOON!! 5 Additional ROSE Rose CARE Sources CORNER and for Hardware, MARCH for Your Garden by by Phyllis Joanne Henslin, M. Reiter Consulting & Siri Amrit Rosarian Kaur Khalsa April has arrived and it s one of our busiest times of the year. There are several rose shows during the month and I hope each of you will enter your roses in at least one of the shows. Our rose gardens are filled with an abundance of beautiful blooms; so what better time than now to pick a few and enter them in a show. Unfortunately springtime also brings infestations of thrips and aphids that cause buds to not open properly and brown edges to appear on the petals. Aphids are generally green and cluster on the stem just below the buds. Thrips are tiny insects within the petals, difficult to see, and damage the blooms from within. See March Rose Care Corner for insect and fungicide products to use in your garden. I am sure you will want your roses to remain fresh for as long as possible as you pick them for friends or to enjoy in your own home. Remember when you cut a stem from a bush, an air bubble will immediately lodge in the stem and will not allow it to take up water. Keep a bucket of clean water with you as you cut your blooms and submerge each freshly cut stem in the water and make a new cut under the water. Now the stem has only taken up water and your blooms will last longer. As the blooms on your roses start to fade, they will need to be removed. With the stressful heat of the summer returning soon, the spent blooms should be removed high on the stem so that the rose will have sufficient foliage to shade the canes. A thick layer of mulch spread around the bushes will also help protect the roots from baking in our extreme heat of the summer. Spider mites may start to appear in your garden also. A strong blast of water with a water wand every 3 to 4 days on the top and bottom of the leaves will help keep them away. If they get a strong start on the leaves of your roses, you may have to resort and use an insecticide such as Floramite. Rosemania carries this product. Continue your fertilization program and remember to use Fish Emulsion to help intensify the color in your blooms. Remember: Always water before and after you fertilize to prevent root burn. Adjust your irrigation as the temperatures increase so your roses are receiving adequate water. With proper drainage you cannot over water. True Spirit - A new rose in our garden this year My challenge for you during the month of April: Spend time in your garden just enjoying the fruits of your labors. Take time to smell the roses. Visit one or two of our local rose shows. Better yet Enter your roses in a show. Share a bouquet of your roses with a neighbor or a friend. Help promote the beauty of the rose. Join the ARS, it needs our support and the ARS magazine provides a wealth of information for all who grow and love roses. April 2010 Rose Lore Page 5
6 Additional Rose Sources and Hardware, for Your Garden Notice: Pay Close Attention to Your Roses by Joanne M. Reiter By Leroy & Brady, Siri Amrit President Kaur MEVRS Khalsa Many are experiencing various disease problems because of the wet spring and relatively cool days so far this year. We all know and understand Powdery Mildew, but rarely see Blackspot, Anthrancnose, Rust or Downy Mildew. There are some Rosarians in the west valley that have determined that they have Downy Mildew. See the information they sent on Downy Mildew (below). In addition I have pulled together some links to informative web pages so that you can compare what you are seeing on roses in your garden. Please take the time to review these so that you can make an informed decision on appropriate treatments for your roses. Below are some photos via web links for some of the possible fungus diseases that could be infecting and we may be seeing on roses. Without sample and positive pathology identification to know for sure you may be experiencing one of several possible diseases. It is very important to check what you see on affected bushes carefully before arriving at a decision of what the disease/infection is and then determine and apply the appropriate fungicide treatment. The type of fungus infection requires different treatments. Link to photos and information about downy mildew on Roses from Oregon State Extension Service. Link to Baldo Villegas Web Page with more information about Blackspot, Downy Mildew and Antracnose Link to an organic treatment of downy mildew to see the disease description and then the treatment list. For Downy Mildew they show the use of milk but in the description, it is cream. E. LeRoy Brady, March 22, 2010 From: Heidi Leavitt [mailto:htroses3@cox.net] Sent: Sunday, March 21, :56 PM Subject: Downy Mildew - Roses eblast Hi all, Just wanted to give you a heads up, about Downy Mildew. This is a nasty disease. We have it, Wilsons have it and some of our customers have already lost bushes. You need to spray with Alliette. Sorry there is no home remedy. Alliette is available from ROSEMANIA. If you need further help or advice, us. Thanks and good luck, Heidi and Terry Leavitt (Alliette is also available from TAMPA AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTS, ) April 2010 Rose Lore Page 6
7 NOTICES MUSINGS from from the MCC the MCC ROSE ROSE GARDEN GARDEN Mickey Carol Kundrat, Poe, Volunteer Coordinator Hello Dead Headers & Pruners! Pruning season is officially over! We were fortunate to have cooler weather during February which made our work a lot easier. Due to the cool Spring we experienced, the Rose Garden was not in full bloom for the Rose Garden tour, but the roses were very healthy looking all the same. 800 roses were planted this year, bringing the grand total to Who would have thought that 200 donated roses in 1997 would blossom into 9000 in just 13 years? It s an accomplishment in which we can take much pride. 65 volunteers attended the Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon. We enjoyed mild temperatures under the trees in the garden as we dined on sub sandwiches. Leroy Brady & Mary Lou Coffman gave a moving tribute to Carol Poe, our past Volunteer Co-coordinator, honoring her 12 years of service and her many accomplishments that helped make the Rose Garden what it is today. Prizes such as loppers, clippers and rose bushes were given away. Every attendee walked away with a token of appreciation from us for their dedication and hard work. We were honored to have Jared Langkilde, Assistant to the President at MCC join us at the Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon along with his wife, his children and his mother. Without MCC s indispensable support, our garden would not be what it is today. Thank you Jared! Now dead heading begins! The first Dead header s meeting will be Saturday, April 17 th at 8:30 am in the garden. We will need some extra help. Our consulting rosarians will be at the Pacific Southwest District Convention and Rose Show in Tucson, April 16 th through the 18 th., so we will need experienced dead headers to help show new volunteers the correct way to dead head. Don t forget to bring your cameras as the Garden should be in full bloom. SPECIAL PEOPLE: Pete & Jean Peggler at the Rose Auction last month. They are deadheaders and pruners in the MEVRS Rose Garden at MCC. Both are tireless workers who spend many hours a week in the garden. Both are retired from electronics firms; Pete from Motorola and Jean from Intel. Jean is also active in an adult reading volunteer program. They are so good at pruning and deadheading they have been requested to do the pruning and deadheading of the AARS Test Garden Roses. April 2010 Rose Lore Page 7
