1 MESA EAST VALLEY Rose Lore WRITTEN BY AND FOR MEMBERS OF THE EAST VALLEY EDITOR: JUDY SWEADOR CO-EDITOR PHYLLIS HENSLIN Monthly Meeting: Mesa Community College (FREE PARKING) MCC ROSE GARDEN 1833 West Southern Ave. Mesa, AZ Member Meeting : Thursday September 11, 2014 At 7PM Program; Old Garden Roses PRESENTED by Diana Kilmer September,

2 MEVRS September Spotlight An interesting program highlighting Old Garden roses will be presented by Diana Kilmer of Temecula, California on Sept. 11 th. Diana and her husband Walt started with only 10 roses in their garden in 1985 and now have 375 roses of which 40 are Old Garden roses. Diana is a Master Consulting Rosarian, Horticulture and Arrangement judge. You won t want to miss her power point presentation and learn which OGR s withstand our desert heat. The old garden roses (OGR) are the patriarchs and matriarchs of the rose world. They are defined as roses in existence before 1867, that magical date4 when the first hybrid tea, La France, was introduced to begin the world of modern roses. These classics bear such designations as alba, bourbon, damask, gallica and tea. Although they are the ancestors, they differ from the modern hybrids by their distinctive petal forms. Rather than the neat, formal symmetry of a high-centered hybrid tea, they offer a studied elegance and sophistication of a dowager queen. Indeed the highest award given to an old garden rose in a rose show is the ARS Dowager Queen Award. One characteristic of most old garden roses that has been lost on many of the modern hybrid offspring is the classic rose fragrance. Most old garden roses smell like roses should smell. As you might expect, many of these classics are rare and some of course are extinct. There are, however, a few nurseries which specialize in supplying them to interested rosarians. Baronne Prevost September,

3 Get ready for fall rose care MEVRS will have gloves and pruners for sale at our monthly meetings starting in September. These gloves come in small, medium, large and x-large sizes. A must have as they protect your arms from the rose prickles. The pruners are just the right size for deadheading and trimming small rose canes. We hope to have them available also at the monthly MCC Rose Garden Dead headers mtg. that is held on the 3 rd Saturday of each month. September,

10 ROSE CARE CORNER for September, 2014 by Phyllis Henslin, Master Rosarian September is a good time to walk through your rose garden and make notes in your garden diary of the roses that are struggling to stay alive or that died after another hot dry summer. I am sure most of us will need to replace a rose or two. Fall pruning: Even though the days are starting to cool a bit, your roses are still suffering from heat stress so it s best to wait until the 3 rd or 4 th week in September to start pruning. A good pruning plan is to start pruning the side of your bushes that get morning sun and leave the side that gets afternoon sun until October. During the summer, our roses form candelabras or multiple thin stems at the top of the bush. As you prune, remove ¼ to 1/3 of the top of the bush to get below these candelabras. This will help open up the bush and make room for new growth that will give you beautiful blooms on strong stems to enjoy the rest of the year. Cut out any dead canes, spindly stems and blind shoots. Hybrid teas need pencil size or larger stems to support a good sized bloom. When pruning, cut about ¼ inch above a bud eye and choose a bud eye pointing to the outside of the plant. Keep the leaves on the stems. We do not remove the leaves until the January pruning. When finished pruning, clean up the cuttings, dead leaves and add a layer of new mulch if needed. Fertilizing: You should have continued to fertilize your roses through the summer months with an organic fertilizer. If it s been four to six weeks since you last fertilized, feed them with Gro Ganic or Millorganite at the recommended rate. Go ½ of the rate for potted roses. Once temperatures have dropped for the season, we can start a more aggressive fertilization program using Arizona Best Citrus fertilizer, foliar fertilizers, alfalfa meal, fish emulsion and Epson salts. Continue to hose off your roses early in the day to avoid creating a humid environment that may promote powdery mildew. Continue with your summer watering schedule but once temperatures stay consistently below 100 degrees you can readjust your watering schedule. Have fun!! Remember for most of us this is a hobby. Make it easy and share the beauty of your roses with others. Roses make people smile. Life without gardening I don t think so September,
