1 Our National Floral Emblem Rose Lore Newsletter written by Members, for Members of the Mesa-East Valley Rose Society Affiliated with the American Rose Society Bob O Brien, editor May 2009 Bronze Star - hybrid tea rose The striking colors of Bronze Star set this Hybrid Tea apart from other roses. The orange-apricot color fades to light apricot as the flower ages. It cleans itself very well. The blooms are large, double, five to six inches across with around 35 petals. The rose is bushy, tall and vigorous, medium green foliage frames the rose beautifully. It is a wonderful rose for cutting, with a strong spicy fragrance. The parentage of this rose is an unknown seedling and Just Joey. This rose is in our Veteran s Garden and is a favorite of everyone who sees it. It is in all five of the circle beds. This rose was named and released in 2002 by Star Roses to honor war heroes and to support the World War II Memorial. In this special, extra pages issue of our newsletter, look for pictures from our April 26 Rose Garden Tour. Eight hosts graciously allowed MEVRS members and their guests to tour their private gardens, see their roses, ask questions, and generally enjoy the beautiful gardens, the blooming roses, and the wonder April weather. Check our website for more rose photos. 3 Tool Tips by Cindy Jepsen Product Guide for Roses by Mike Jepsen Fertilizing Extension Probe & Funnel: This is a handmade tool designed and constructed by Dave Dibble, long time member of the MEVRS. The purpose of this tool is to apply granular rose fertilizer with a technique called vertical side dressing. Vertical Side Dressing is a more efficient fertilizing technique because you are applying the fertilizer closer to the roots, keeping it in its pure form, and preventing it from being tied up in the soil. The galvanized extension probe is used to poke holes around the drip line of the rose and the PVC extension funnel allows you to pour the fertilizer down deep into the holes, close to the roots. Using extensions on the probe and funnel prevents back injury. Material List: extension probe 3 4 feet 3/4 galvanized pipe, $ round concrete form stake, $ /2 X 1/4 bolt and 1/4 self locking nut Drill a hole about 3 from the end of the galvanized pipe and concrete form stake. Use the bolt & self locking nut to attach the two together - seen photo. Material List: extension funnel 3 of 3/4 schedule 40 PVC pipe Small funnel Glue the funnel to the end of the PVC pipe as seen in the photo. Take the probe and poke four holes around the drip line of the rose (about 10 from center). Then put the extension funnel in one of the holes and pour 1/4 of your fertilizer into the hole. Continue with the other three holes. Fill in the holes with soil and water thoroughly. Disper-sul is a water soluble sulfur product. What it does... It lowers the ph of our soils. Our soils here in the valley run at a ph of ; roses do best at By lowering the ph, many nutrients that are tied up in the soil become available, i.e.: iron, zinc, copper, manganese, and boron. Sulfur also helps to break down caliche, which is a big problem for us here. There are two forms of sulfur that are available to us. One is soil sulfur and the other is a water soluble sulfur, like Disper-sul. Both are nearly pure sulfur products. The most important difference between the two is in the amount of time it takes for each material to break down in the soil. Soil sulfur takes up to three years to break down, while Disper-sul takes about six months. That s a big difference when it comes to improving your soil. When to use... Once or twice a year at most at a rate of 1/4-1/2 cup per bush. Remember, water soil the day before you apply the material and scratch it in, then water again. 4 more WHAT I LEARNED (about roses) EN-ROUTE TO JURY DUTY by Lynn Twitchell While using Phoenix Metro Light Rail for an eight-day stint at Superior Court in February, I got caught up with my back issues of American Rose, the publication of the American Rose Society. Here are some of the gems I learned: Frank Straser, Albany, NY. mused there was, indeed, scientific basis to some of his unorthodox practices in growing plants. He always thought his idiosyncrasies were just that weirdness in the garden causing neighbors eyebrows to rise: (Oct-Nov 07, pg 18). Talk to your roses: Frank read that scientists claim the carbon dioxide in expelled human breath benefits plants. He also found in an intriguing experiment, that plants talk among themselves as well. They produce a special vibration to warn each other of impending danger. Pet your plants: Plants, especially the leaves, are subjected to all kinds of external forces rain, wind, heat. An eminent biologist suggested that over time all plants have evolved to expect and respond to these contacts which provide stimulation. Without it they become fragile. So, brush your roses with your hand as you pass by. This will help them remain strong and resilient. Think kind thoughts: Not only do plants react to speech, but, according to Frank, in one study he read, plants registered stress when people nearby even thought about doing them harm. Play classical music: Frank reported from a laboratory study comparing hard rock to music of the Classical and Baroque periods. The study concluded that music does have a demonstrable effect on the growth of plants. It s the vibration. Hard rock music nearly killed the plants, while music from Two funny faces peeking out on a crisp Arizona morning. Is this our home, is this our bed? They timidly ask in disbelief. We awoke, twins, to this blissful coolness in the air. We ll blush a bit of extra color to meet the autumn crisp, And show our young splendor to the rose lady who tends us through the summer s heat. MacFarland s Own, floribunda, cluster flowered Bred in USA, Pink blend, white reverse blooms. Large semidouble bloom form. Blooms in flushes throughout the season. Comment: Rare in Arizona. Some in Tucson. Four plants in the Phoenix area. Lynn Twitchell has one of them. Lucky Lady! May 2009 Rose Lore Page 4

5 MUSINGS from the MCC ROSE GARDEN Carol Poe, Volunteer Coordinator Deadheading Roses (This article was written by Phyllis Henslin.) Once the rose bloom begins to fade, it s time for deadheading. The recommended way to deadhead is to cut off the faded bloom just above the first three leaflet and no Lower than the 1 st fifth leaflet on the cane....cut on slant above 3rd leaflet...deadheading at 5th leaflet...deadheading at peduncle During the summer months you can deadhead just below the Peduncle the slightly swollen section in the stem below the bloom. Recent trials have clearly established that the more foliage a rose plant retains, the better its performance. All the fertilizers in the soil won t do any good without a full compliment of foliage, because it s only through photosynthesis that the bushes manufacture food. Leaving the maximum amount of foliage on the bush also helps shade the canes from our hot summer sun....deadheading too much cane Remember: healthy bushes will produce the most blooms and have the best chance for survival. (Photos by Bill & Phyllis Henslin) You might like to consider helping to deadhead in the Rose Garden as a Rover. Rovers roam the Rose Garden breathing in the beauty of the blooms of our 500 plus varieties of roses stopping to deadhead blooms as they roam! If you will make at least one visit each month to the Rose Garden to deadhead, then me and sign up as a Rover. You are invited to come and deadhead our beautiful rose garden with the Deadheaders on Saturday, May 16th. Deadheaders will be deadheading the Rose Garden at 7:00 am or earlier! Social time with coffee, lemonade, and Krispy Kreme donuts will be at 8:30 with a business meeting at 9:00. Most have finished their deadheading by then and go home after the short business meeting. 10 Additional Rose Sources and Hardware, for Your Garden by Joanne M. Reiter & Siri Amrit Kaur Khalsa Receiving healthy rose plants that you have ordered, is always a joy. Over the past few years, Siri Amrit and I have found several rose nurseries that we have done business with, that are not listed in the Rose Sources section of the MEVRS website. Siri Amrit and I came upon these nurseries from different perspectives. Siri Amrit has been searching for sources for Old Garden Roses (OGR), especially if they are virus free. And I, after a few years of not having a rose garden, was surprised by how many of my former sources were no longer in business. I had to find new sources. We have enjoyed superior service and plants from these nurseries. And like any rose nuts we wish to share them with you. So add the following nurseries to your own list of favorite sources, and enjoy! 13 Member Profile, by Lynn Twitchell Steven O Brien & Linda Gibson, members since Sept When Steven was a third grader in the San Francisco Bay area, he and his buddies would frequently sneak out of the YMCA summer program to go exploring. They soon found a destination that became their favorite, the San Jose Heritage Rose Gardens. Thus, a lifetime love of roses was born. In 2004, Linda & Steven combined their families in his Tempe home. Needing space, they added a room addition on to the house. During that construction a small Bobcat tractor (Steven s words) destroyed the backyard. With the backyard a blank slate and a love of roses, they decided to build a rose garden. I had a co-worker who knew a lady named Carol Poe, said Steven. Mrs. Poe would be able to help me with anything I ever needed to know about growing roses in the desert. The rest is history, we joined the Deadheaders group and the MEVRS. I started planting roses on Fortuniana root stock three years ago. Today we have 40 plants on Fortuniana, and more than 100 roses, total, on the property, said Steven. Cheryl Doan, Vice President, MEVRS, said, Their garden is a charming example of a young garden. Like most of us, Steven and Linda didn t get to choose the shape of their yard, so they adapted in a most interesting way. The front of the home offers only a hint of roses. The long pathway along side of the house is Steven s Zen area. He explains it as a space he uses to put everyday cares aside to ready himself for the color of the backyard garden. Steve and Linda determined a long time ago that they needed in their lives an interest to share something they could do together. Roses became that love. Their four children appreciate their parents enthusiasm in this endeavor. Before then After ( Before then.. After WOW! May 2009 Rose Lore Page 13
