1 The Marin Rose A non-profit Affiliate of the American Rose Society 2008 Gold Honor Medal Winner 2010 Gold Honor Medal Winner Volume 37, No. 6 June 2011 Romantic Rambling Roses With Jolene Adams Tuesday, June 14, :30 pm Marin Art & Garden Center Inside Highlights President s Message Program Notes Monthly Show Results Rose of the Month Rose Care for June Garden Gadgets If I Only Had Three Annual Show Results In the MAGC Garden R x for Healthy Roses They Never Came Back By Darrell g.h. Schramm Almost immediately upon its introduction, Ulrich Brunner fils, a hybrid perpetual of 1882, was very popular in California. It was bred by Antoine Levet of Lyon, who had introduced the first large-flowered, continuously blooming, red climber, Reine Marie Henriette in 1878 as well as the famously huge Paul Neryon in 1869, of which Ulrich Brunner fils is a seedling. Ulrich Brunner is a cerise red. H.R. Darlington, of England s National Rose Society, in 1911 did not like the cherry red color nor the shape of the rose (it is large and cupped). He did acknowledge that though it was not very free-flowering, it did grow like a weed. Well, perhaps in England that was the case, but in California it flowers non-stop from spring into fall. It is prolific if not profuse. I peg a few of the canes to produce even more roses. It grows to 5 feet. Vita Sackville-West also pegged the rose for a more generous floraison, to quote her, who delighted in the French word. In fact, she asserted that this rose not only lasts long in a vase of water but also prolongs the blooming season. She called it a real cut-and-come-again flower. Cut it and the beauty returns. And it exudes a strong fragrance! Of course most rosarians are familiar with Cecile Brunner, either the shrub (1881) or the climber (1894) or both. Cecile was the daughter of Ulrich Brunner, pere, and the sister of Ulrich Brunner, fils. The latter also named his daughter, born in 1879, Cecile, but it seems more likely that the French hybridist Ducher named the 1881 rose after the older Cecile, who, being daughter and sister of well-known nurserymen, probably would have been known by Ducher. But of course since the polyantha rose was also nicknamed the Sweetheart Rose and since the flowers are rather small, it might have been named for the little girl child as a way to honor both her and Ulrich Brunner, fils.

The latter Ulrich, born in 1848, followed in the footsteps of his father ( ) in Switzerland and also became a gardener, specializing in roses. He married a widow two years older than he. His nursery work, however, given the high competition of other nurserymen in Lausanne, did not fare well. In 1891 he declared bankruptcy. The following year he left his family, quit Lausanne, and to this day no one knows where he went or when he died. Enfant de France He was not the only namesake for a rose who never returned at least not alive. Four years after the son of Napoleon III and Empress Eugenie was born in 1856, a French hybridist from Bordeaux named a rose in the boy s honor: Enfant de France. It is a somewhat upright bush that grows to about three feet, producing many full flowers. The buds are round and tight, appearing as though balled from rain or heavy fog. A thick profusion of crowded pink petals allows no appearance of stamens or stigma. The somewhat quartered center wears a darker pink. Narrow, oblong leaves tend to fold upward toward the mid-rib, canoe-like. While it is classed as a hybrid perpetual, its growth and characteristics compare rather to the damask or Portland: the graceful, slender stems; the decreasing space between nodes from bottom to top; the compact flower. A number of rose experts have expressed doubts about this rose being the true and original Enfant de France. Clair Martin of the Huntington Rose Gardens describes Lartay s Enfant as having numerous red prickles; mine does not have many prickles, only a modicum, and they are not red but grey while a few new ones appear black. The canes on mine are light brown or slate grey, but not his burnt umber. And unlike Martin s, no blossoms on my plant have a button eye, which he states they often do. Enfant de France On the other hand, The Marin Rose 2 June 2011

3 Charles Quest-Ritson s description equates more to the rose in my garden when he singles out much darker patches of [pink] color that occur irregularly anywhere within the flower and long drooping leaves. It seems that two different roses are described here. Except for its excellent recurrent bloom, I am inclined to think of my Enfant de France as part of that little known class of roses, the Agathes, more specifically Rose Belgic. In his history of roses, Roy Shepherd describes Agathe roses as very full, compact flowers, mostly of pale tones, having spreading outer petals and concave inner ones. The foliage resembles that of variety [gallica] officinalis, but is curiously curled... the characters denote a relationship to R. centifolia. And in his short list of such roses, he includes L Enfant de France. This description fits my rose. Granted the article in front of Enfant creates a slightly different name, but then Brent Dickerson has written that in the 1820s writers often carelessly mixed their facts a carelessness still fairly common today. Clair Martin has called this rose a foundling; certainly it is a mystery rose of sorts. DNA might solve it. But what is the story behind Enfant de France, a title given to the prince who was to inherit the French throne, when, indeed, he never did inherit it? Born Eugene Louis Jean Joseph Napoleon, he was known, like his father, as Louis Napoleon, or just The Prince. On the occasion of his birth, Napoleon III gave 60,000 francs to establish an orphanage named for his son. Noblesse oblige. By 1867, the emperor with posterity aforethought and at the slightest excuse would grace the public with the presence of the crown prince. But, to quote an old Eugene Louis Jean Joseph Napoleon New York Times article, The eyes of the world were never really fixed on young Louis until the opening of the Franco-Prussian war in Since the emperor would unflinchingly enter battle, and could indeed be killed, the teenage prince might well become ruler of France. With the disastrous French defeat, however, the Emperor and his small family fled to England. There the royal family settled in Chiselhurst. While receiving his English education, the prince was known for being both amiable and courageous. When the British in early 1879 called for recruits to invade South Africa s Zululand, the intrepid Enfant enlisted at once. On June 1, 1879, the prince with seven other soldiers of the regiment and a friendly Zulu were sent ahead to scout for a campsite. In the thick, tall grassland of a plain, the nine men were ambushed. All ducked for cover, and all escaped but three troopers. (Oddly, nothing is mentioned of the friendly Zulu. ) When the regiment raced to the site of the ambush, they found the bodies of the men. One was that of the crown prince. But for a locket on a chain around his throat, he had been stripped naked and repeatedly stabbed. Seventeen or eighteen assagai (javelin) wounds covered his body. He was 23. Though six weeks later the British defeated the Zulus, the death of the Enfant de France ended any hope for the Napoleonic dynasty. Though they never came back alive, these two men are remembered in the names of two roses still very much alive, roses that grace my garden. 4 President s Message At our May 10 th general meeting, there was a short business meeting to vote on changes to our Standing Rules and to select two members to serve on the Nominating Committee. The approved Standing Rules can be reviewed on our website, Our Nominating Committee is now complete, with Sigrid Boitano and Viven Bronshvag nominations being confirmed as our two members selected from the general membership. The first five months of this year have been amazing! In early May we presented our 37 th Annual Rose Show at Northgate Mall, with many awards going to Marin Rose Society members. While many volunteers worked at the show, I would like to say special thanks Lydia Treadway, this year s Annual Rose Show Chair. Marin Rose Society also hosted a wonderful Spring Business Meeting for the NCNH District that was well attended. Our newsletter won the American Rose Society (ARS) Gold award for best newsletter for a rose societies with membership size greater than 75. This gives us a special reason to congratulate our co-editors Gail Trimble and Joan Goff, and the contributing authors for outstanding work. Some of our authors also won individual ARS Award of Merit for their articles. Nanette Londeree won two awards; What s Bugging You? (series) and Hooked on Sports. Gary Scales won for his series The Rose Garden. We also had three members that won awards for photos of roses. Gary Scales won a first place for his photo of Berry Lane. Betty Mott won first places for her photos of Thanks To Sue and Irresistible, and Joan Goff won a second place award for her photo of Simplex, and a third place for Gold Metal. Congratulations to all! The MAGC Rose Garden is in full bloom and looking great. Lenore Ruckman continues to volunteer for Dorothy Arnold while she is dealing with health issues. Lenore and I have noticed that getting people to volunteer to work in the rose garden is getting more difficult. While we all have busy lives, the garden still needs the same level of care if it is to remain the beautiful garden we all love to visit. If you cannot make one of the scheduled work-days, feel free to come and spend some time in the garden whenever you are able. The garden will love you, and it is a wonderful place, and if you feel the need, pulling some weeds or deadheading would be appreciated. Start thinking about the Marin County Fair and what roses you are going to exhibit this year. If you need any help on preparing your roses to exhibit, please contact one of our 19 Consulting Rosarians for help. Their names and phone numbers are in the award-winning newsletter, and are also on the society website. See you at the June general meeting. Don Program Notes At our May 10 meeting, Marin Master Gardeners Betsy McGee and Patricia Compton presented a program on Contributing to a Healthy Community in your Garden. They talked about creating a healthy ecosystem in the garden by not using practices that disturb the ecosystem, with the goal that all living organisms exist in harmony. Sustainability was a theme of this presentation and both Betsy and Patricia are experienced on this topic. Betsy McGee is on the Sustainable Landscape Practices Committee and she has recently re-landscaped her own garden from a lawn-centric design to one that is water wise and provides habitat for wildlife. Patricia Compton is a graduate of the Marin Environmental Forum, and is a the coordinator of the Marin Brain Injury Network garden in Larkspur, which serves as a demonstration garden for a waterwise and sustainable habitat. At our June 14 meeting, we are fortunate to have our own famous NCNH personality, Jolene Adams, to talk to us about Romantic Rambling Roses! Who hasn t been enthralled with these giant beauties when they put up their fantastic show of blooms covering a structure, or even climbing up into a tree? Although the official class name rambler has been changed by the American Rose Society to hybrid wichurana, the word rambler is still most commonly used as it conjures up such a fascinating, romantic picture of blooms climbing everywhere. Jolene s program will be a visual slide presentation about ramblers, their history, and their family relationships. Jolene is a woman of many accomplishments, is currently Vice President of the American Rose Society, and has served the ARS in many different capacities for over 20 years. She has been a leader in many local rose societies, in the NCNH District, notably as District Director, in the World Federation of Rose Societies, and in California Garden Clubs, Inc. She was instrumental in creating and publishing the ARS website, and has served as the ARS Webmaster since the website was launched. She has also served on the ARS Bylaws and Horticultural Judges committees, is the NCNH Consulting Rosarian Chair, and is a Master Gardener. Come listen to Jolene give her fascinating talk! 6 Rose of the Month Princesse Alexandra By Lydia Treadway, Master Rosarian The rich magenta blooms of 'Princesse Alexandra' are beautiful and ruffled in appearance. It is a hybrid tea rose from the Renaissance Collection that has an old rose look, with ruffled form and sweet strong fragrance. It blooms and flushes throughout the season. Her abundant, deep pink magenta flowers and strong rose fragrance make you stop and smell the flowers. I can not wait to cut the blooms and bring them into the house to enjoy their perfume. It was bred in 1998 by L. Pernille Olesen and Mogens Olesen in Denmark and was introduced into commerce by Poulsen Rosen A/S as Princess Alexandra. This rose was named after the Danish Princess Alexandra who was born June 30, The American Rose Society classifies this rose as a shrub with parentage listed as Margaret Merril x seedling. 7 The 2011 Annual Rose Show is now history for another year, the vases have been put away, the tags and Q-tips are in the rose prep box, and my garden is now blooming like crazy! Doesn t this just drive you nuts? As an exhibitor, this seems to be the way my garden blooms, about a week or two AFTER the annual rose show. Actually my garden is in multiple stages of bloom right now. I have some roses that have not bloomed at all this year: Mardi Gras, Alain Blanchard (this is normal as it is a late once bloomer), Tea Clipper and Rhapsody in Blue. They all have buds now, but have not yet bloomed. I have roses that have been fully cut back and now new growth is just beginning and I have roses in full bloom. Many need dead heading and I am trying to find the time. Rose Care for June By Joan Goff, Consulting Rosarian So in June, it is time to cut back your first blooms and you can choose to cut hard or lightly by taking out spent blooms. (I remember that Tom Bonfigli always said to prune lightly on the first blooms on Growing tip with torched end typical of rose midge a new plant.) Of course there is always weeding to do as well. Trying to keep ahead of the weeds is always a problem in my garden, but it makes sense to get them out so that all the water can go to the roses. You can also fertilize now after you have cut back and cleaned up the area around the roses. Using any fertilizer with a balance is fine. You could also make up the organic fertilizer tea (the recipe can be find on our website at: and give your roses a nice boost. I believe this is also a good time to evaluate your roses. Actually any time is a good time to evaluate your roses but why not now? You have had a good first bloom to judge, variable weather conditions to judge how fungal diseases have either attacked your bushes or not, and generally - do you want this rose or not? I am now keeping track of these variables in my garden and adding one more evaluation: whether or not a rose has blind shoots. I have several roses that continue to throw blind shoots for the first bloom. In other words, they have no first bloom, only blind shoots. Last winter I shovel pruned Color Magic and Sheer Magic because of blind shoots. This spring I had blind shoots on Mardi Gras (the reason it is in bud just now) and Mimi Farina plus a couple more. I am not sure why I continue to get blind shoots but it is probably rose midge that is to blame. Since I don t spray, I will either have to live with this problem or shovel prune. The odd thing that remains is, why does rose midge only pick on some of the roses and others not all? Most of my roses do not have this problem. I plan on doing some research on this problem and if I find a cure, I will be sure to let you know. Enjoy your roses! 8 Garden Gadgets and Products By Barbara Picarelli, Master Rosarian Now this gadget is really high tech, it's a Dremel. This high speed rotary tool was invented by Albert J. Dremel and is very popular with craft hobbyists as it can be used for drilling, grinding, sharpening, cutting, cleaning, polishing, sanding, routing, carving and engraving. I bought it to sharpen my tools since I have so many tools, and I'm constantly having to sharpen them and getting rust off them because you-know-who (husband, Rudi) left them outside. I decided it was time to invest in the Dremel. It comes in a handy case with many different files to sharpen any type device. I happened to get mine at the Air Force PX for a good price but several places in Marin carry them. I have seen them at Orchard Supply and Home Depot, but they are pricey. They are similar in size to a drill and you use the file or flat sander, and sand off any rust or sharpen your tool. Though they This small plant dolly is one that I bought at the Grocery Outlet for only $3.99, A colorful variety of watering cans but they can be bought at any garden shop or hardware store. They come in many sizes and will hold many different weights depending on what you need. They can be flat, wood, metal, plastic, etc. The beauty is you can move your pots around without the back-breaking weight. I have almost all of my pots on them. Dremel are available cordless, this one is electric so an electrical outlet would have to be handy. I'll probably use it in the garage, since the garage has both lighting and outlets. I took this photo at the local Sloat Garden Center in Novato - I just loved the colors of the watering cans and it makes a nice photo. Most watering cans come in a variety of materials - metal to plastic. They can have short stout necks with large spouts, or long skinny necks that allow you to reach into plants. I have a little copper one that I use in the house. All photos by the author, Barbara Picarelli Metal plant dolly The Marin Rose 8 June 2011

9 Pink, Apricot and Yellow Blend Cheryl Frechette is our current Program Chair and First Vice President on our Board of Directors. Many of you may remember Cher when she first joined the Marin Rose Society in She was first with us for four years, becoming a Consulting Rosarian in 2001 before moving with her family to Boulder, CO. They lived in Boulder for eight years. In Boulder, she joined three rose societies, became a Horticultural Judge, was President of the Boulder Valley Rose Society for two years, Vice President and Rose Show Chair of the Denver Rose Society twice and was District Chair for Roses in Review for six years. Whew! She moved back to California last fall and she and her husband, Paul, have now purchased a home in Healdsburg on about ¾ of an acre. They have about ¼ of it in roses and perennials and they also have a grape arbor with 280 vines of merlot grapes. In the front garden there are about 50 lavender plants. If I Only Had Three Blend Roses Featuring Cheryl Frechette By Joan Goff, Consulting Rosarian This new garden is in full sun most of the day and Healdsburg does have warm sunny days most of the summer. They also have some wind, fog and clay soil. Cher s new rose and perennial garden has added amendments and it is divided into beds of 4 quarters with pea gravel paths and with a center antique urn. It is a beautiful garden and certainly a great improvement over the original boring large lawn in the backyard. At the new house, she currently has 54 rose bushes, with 37 large roses and 17 miniatures and minifloras. In Boulder, she had 130 roses. She is currently growing hybrid teas, floribundas, shrubs, climbers, minis and old garden roses. Her new challenges in Healdsburg are going to be similar to those of us in Marin - namely fungal diseases, including rust, blackspot and powdery mildew. She hopes not to have to spray. Cher is continuing to look for some of her favorite minis and minifloras as she was not able to bring any roses into California from Colorado. The Marin Rose 9 June 2011

10 Her three favorite roses are Gemini, Marilyn Monroe and Bee s Knees. Gemini, HT, pink blend, petals, 1999, ARS rating 8.2 was bred by Dr. Keith W. Zary in 1991 and was introduced in the US by Bear Creek Gardens, Inc in She has remained extremely popular and has won many Queen of Show awards. Gemini is also used as a seed parent in hybridizing and I can attest that her seeds are easily germinated. Last year, in my first attempt at hybridizing, all of my first seedlings were with Gemini as a momma. She is, all around, a great rose. Her parentage is Anne Morrow Lindbergh x New Year. Gemini Marilyn Monroe, HT, apricot blend, petals, 2001, ARS rating 7.9 was hybridized by Tom Carruth and introduced in She is a cross of Sunset Celebration x St. Patrick and is disease resistant with beautiful foliage, has wonderful fragrance and has exhibition form. She is on the trophy table at almost every rose show in our district. She too is an all around wonderful rose for anyone s garden. Bees Knees was Marilyn Monroe another rose bred by Dr. Keith W. Zary and it was introduced by Bear Creek Gardens, Inc in Bees Knees, min, yellow blend, full, 1998, ARS rating 8.0. It parentage is seedling x Haute Pink. Bees Knees is also a great rose on the trophy table. Cher really knows how to pick out the winning roses! Cher started exhibiting roses as soon as she joined the Marin Rose Society in 1998 and has continued Bees Knees exhibiting since that time. She was introduced to roses as a little girl helping her grandmother look through the Jackson and Perkins Rose Catalog to select new roses to plant each year. She would then help her grandmother plant the bushes, pick off Japanese beetles, and admire the beautiful roses as they emerged. This was in New Jersey and her grandmother lived with her family. She, like many of us, loves her roses. Cher told me, of all the hobbies and pleasurable activities that I do, I find my rose hobby the most relaxing and rewarding of all. There is nothing as soothing to me as working in my garden. Thank you Cher, and welcome back home! Cher in Vineyard Photo of Bees Knees by Gail Trimble. All other photos by Joan Goff. 12 Hello to all Marin Rose Society members! Have you visited the rose garden at MAGC lately? It is exceptionally beautiful this year, probably because of our large rainfall and cooler temperatures. Do you realize it is the only public rose garden in Marin, and it is the crown jewel of the Marin Art and Garden Center? How does it continue to look so fabulous? It is our dedicated members working every week to allow the garden to always look its very best. MAGC has weddings and events planned most weekends all spring and summer. It is our responsibility to continue to deadhead, remove diseased leaves, tie up the climbers, rake the paths and apply compost tea when scheduled. In the MAGC Garden By Lenore Ruckman, Master Rosarian I am looking for some additional new volunteers to work in the garden. Please call me to find out how you can help. My home phone number is I can schedule you for any time that you can help. This is also a great opportunity to meet some members and to learn proper ways of pruning and caring for roses. 13 R x for Healthy Roses - Nasty Diseases By Nanette Londeree, Master Rosarian For most rose gardeners, the biggest challenge to growing healthy roses is keeping them free of disease, especially anthracnose, blackspot, downy mildew and rust. Caused by nasty fungi, this quartet of diseases is considered to be the pestilence of the wet spring and fall months, but can infect your garden during our dry summer months given the right conditions. Effectively managing these invaders employs planning, vigilance and patience! Anthracnose, also known as purple spotting, spot anthracnose or shot-hole fungus is caused by Sphaceloma rosarum. Symptoms include red or sometimes brown to purple circular spots, 1/16 to 1/8 in diameter that are mostly on the leaves and occasionally on the stem. As the disease progresses, the spots may enlarge with the centers of the spots turning gray, tan or white with a dark red margin. The Downy Mildew spot itself drops out of the leaf, leaving a circular hole, thus creating a shot hole effect, while most of the leaf remains green. In severe cases, the entire leaf will turn yellow and drop. Diplocarpon rosae is the fungus that causes blackspot. It produces characteristic round black spots with fringed or feathery margins on the upper surface of leaves or stems. On some varieties of roses, there may be yellowing around the spots that extend to the entire leaf. The spots are generally seen first on leaves close to the ground. Infected leaves will drop off, and the plant may be almost completely defoliated. Such plants are badly weakened and may die over the winter. One of the most insidious of the fungi that attack roses is downy mildew, caused by the fungus Peronospora sparsa. It can defoliate a plant in just a day or two. Contrary to its name, it really doesn t look downy on roses. Symptoms on leaves vary from yellow, purple to brown irregularly shaped interveinal blotches surrounded by a yellowing of the leaves to a scorch-like burn. The spores are produced on the undersides of the plant s leaves, but the effects are often first observed on the upper sides. There are nine different species of the rust fungus Phragmidium found on roses. The orange, powdery pustules on the undersides of leaves and other plant parts make this disease fairly easy to identify. Early in the season the pustules may appear as yellow to light orange, with the color deepening to dark orange to red brown in the summer. As the disease progresses, the upper sides of the leaves may discolor and drop. All these diseases need free water in order to infect your plants. Their spores are spread by air currents and splashing water, from rain, heavy dew or irrigation, to newly expanding leaves and stems. Blackspot spores need about seven hours in contact with water, and temperatures of F to germinate, while rust prefers slightly cooler temperatures of F, but only two - three hours in free water. As with other diseases, employing preventive measures is the most effective means of managing these nasty diseases. Some options include: Cultural methods hybridizers continue to develop new roses that are resistant to disease; when buying new roses, select varieties that aren t susceptible and individual plants that are disease-free. Plant in a location that has good drainage and gets plenty of sun. Avoid shady spots and dense plantings and ensure the plants get lots of air movement to dry any moisture off the leaves. Maintain a clean garden (pick up and dispose of any infected leaf material). The Marin Rose 13 June 2011

14 Mechanical and physical methods Take care when doing any overhead watering; do it early in the day so plant surfaces have time to dry before temperatures cool in the evening. If possible, switch to alternate methods of irrigation that don t wet leaf surfaces. Chemical methods - there s a plethora of chemical products to treat the fungal diseases. While one may take care of the problem in the short term diseases, along with insects, can develop resistance to a chemical if exposed repeatedly. Select at least two products, each from a different chemical class and that have different modes of action; rotate application of the products to reduce the potential for the pathogen to develop resistance. Horticultural oils can be effective in managing mild cases of some fungal infections; EcoSmart Garden Fungicide, a contact fungicide, is a blend of rosemary, thyme and clove oils labeled for control of anthracnose, blackspot, botrytis and rust, while OMRI listed Organocide from Organic Labs, is a mixture of sesame oil, fish oil, lecithin and soy extract for treatment of blackspot. (Labeled Caution) Natria from Bayer is labeled to treat anthracnose, blackspot, downy mildew and rust; the active ingredient in this biological based fungicide is the bacterium, Bacillus subtilis Q713. Natural Industries Actinovate is another biological fungicide for control of botrytis and downy mildew. (Labeled Caution) Potassium bicarbonate is the active ingredient in Greencure; it s registered for treatment of anthracnose, blackspot, botrytis, leaf spots, downy mildew, and rust. Bonide s Copper Fungicide is also listed for managing those diseases; it s a formulation of copper salts and fatty acids. (Labeled Caution) Both Subdue MAXX, and Aliette are systemic fungicides labeled for control of Phytophthora and downy mildew. They belong to different classes of chemicals with different active ingredients and modes of action. (Labeled Caution) Bayer Advanced Disease Control (triazole class) is one of many chemical fungicides available for treatment of blackspot and rust, along with a range of other fungal diseases. Eagle 20EW from Dow AgroSciences, is a protectant and curative formulation with the active ingredient myclobutanil. (Labeled Caution) A relatively new class of chemicals, the strobilurins, is based on a natural, antifungal chemical produced by a Basidiomycete fungus. BASF s Pageant, with the active ingredient pyraclostrobin, claims to be a broadspectrum fungicide combining two fast acting active ingredients, boscalid and pyraclostrobin, into one product that offers more control on more diseases than any other currently registered fungicide. (Labeled Caution) Managing the quartet of nasty fungal diseases can be a challenging task, especially when Mother Nature decides to keeps that liquid sunshine coming. The Pine cone fungus produces strobilurin good news is that hybridizers are introducing more disease resistant varieties of roses into the market in a wide range of colors and forms, surely ones to catch your fancy. Additionally, chemical companies continue to develop new, environmentally safer materials for the rose gardener. Starting with the least toxic measure, you re likely to find something that will work for you and your garden while being kind to the environment.
