This month I am going to talk about a class of roses in the Modern Roses category Large Flowered Climbers. Although understanding climbers may seem pretty clear cut, this particular class can be confusing to some, especially at a rose show. One might think that any rose that climbs is by definition a climber, so they might put the specimen in the Large-Flowered Climber class. But, roses that climb are very diverse. There are those large climbers that can cover a tree or rooftop, like the species rose R. banksiae lutea. Several Hybrid Multifloras climb, such as the beautiful Veilchenblau. There are roses that used to be called Ramblers (now called Hybrid Wichuranas), large and prolifically climbing, like American Pillar. Many Old Garden Roses climb, like the Noisette Rev D Or. There are shrubs that that can be grown as climbers, such as Sally Holmes, Westerland, or many of the David Austin shrubs, like Graham Thomas. There are the climbing versions of Hybrid Teas or Floribundas, those that have sported (spontaneously mutated) from the original bush form of a rose of the same name, like Climbing Peace or Climbing Iceberg. Yet, none of these are in the class called Large-Flowered Climbers. What the heck, then, are Large-Flowered Climbers? Well, the Large Flowered Climbers are modern rose varieties that climb and were hybridized as climbers rather than having occurred as climbing sports of a particular bush variety. For the rose show, you must check the ARS Handbook for Selecting Roses and place only varieties designated as LCl in the Large-Flowered Climber class. As judges at a rose show, what we see most often are climbing sports of bush roses erroneously placed in the Large-Flowered Climber class. These climbing specimens should be exhibited in the same class as their bush counterpart. So, a Climbing Peace is exhibited in the Hybrid Tea class. Climbing Iceberg is exhibited in the Floribunda class. Of course, you must always first follow the rose show schedule, but this is typically the rule. There is usually a class just for Large-Flowered Climbers. The Marin Rose September 2016

2 Now that we have settled that, I must say that Large-Flowered Climbers are one of the most beautiful rose plants in the landscape and are very versatile. Most produce an abundance of blooms and massive color. They have tall, lax stems that need some form of support if they are to stay upright, so you can train them to climb over an arbor, up the side of the house on a structure, twirled on a tall stand or pillar, or pegged down to the ground to form a cascading fountain shape. When they bloom they can create colorful height and structure in the garden. Most Large-Flowered Climbers are repeat bloomers, which gives them some advantage over many of the older, once flowering climbers. Many have long enough stems to pick and put in a bouquet or flower arrangement. They are a sheer delight! Here are some of my favorite Large-Flowered Climbers. Polka (ARS 8.0, apricot blend) produces masses of beautiful, large apricot flowers on a very hearty plant. In my yard, I have one on each side of the arbor on the far side of my rose garden and in the spring, it is covered with blooms and is so striking in the landscape! It also re-blooms throughout the summer. The flowers are produced on long stems so they can be picked for a bouquet. The blooms have good vase life and are fragrant. Fourth of July (ARS 8.2, red blend) is a red and white splashed climber with blooms that open out fairly flat (10-16 petals) and display a bright golden stamen. The colored stripes are bold and they vary considerably on the individual blooms. They come in open clusters of 5-10 which make quite a stunning impact in the landscape. It is a reliable repeat bloomer. Polka Roses on Cher s Arbor in her garden Soaring Spirits (7.9, pink blend) is similar to Fourth of July except that it is striped pink, yellow, and creamy white, with bright yellow stamens. In fact, it is an offspring of Fourth of July, crossed with Berries n Cream. It blooms prolifically in large clusters which last well in a vase. I grow this on the arbor in close view from my kitchen window and it is so pretty! Royal Sunset (ARS 8.9, apricot blend) is a very vigorous climber with massive stems and outsize, blousy flowers starting out a glowing orange with hints of gold and yellow at the base of the petals. The blooms are darker outside and paler inside, and fade to a pale apricot as they age. The blooms are borne singly or in small clusters on long, strong stems so are good for bouquets or arrangements, Soaring Spirit Bloom The Marin Rose 2 September 2016

3 although the blooms blow open quickly. I grow this on an 8 ft. by 8 ft. lattice against my house and it has just about covered it. America (ARS 8.2, orange pink) has strongly scented Hybrid Tea shaped flowers at first which then open out cupped. They come in small clusters of 4 to 5 and are a beautiful salmon pink with a paler reverse. Although a repeat flowerer, it has relatively long periods between flowerings. It is a sturdy, upright plant and when you walk by it, the intense fragrance is a treat! Fourth of July Royal Sunset In closing, I want to note that this is the last article in the series of articles on Rose Classes that Betty Mott and I have been writing for the Marin Rose. I have enjoyed writing these articles and always learn something in my research. 4 Polka Bloom from Large Flowered Climber Indian Summer Harvest Moon President s Message HAVE YOU HEARD THE NEWS! Just when we were beginning to think about having our Harvest Dinner back in the Livermore Room at MAGC in November, we were hit by a bombshell from the MAGC staff. Apparently the rules have changed. No potlucks! Instead, we were given the choice of choosing an expensive caterer on their list. Adding up the cost of the room for 4 hours, the set up fees and the cost of hired help plus a catered dinner made the choice easy. At our September board meeting we unanimously voted to have our Harvest Dinner at San Rafael Joe's in downtown San Rafael. The location is central, there is a large, lighted parking lot, we can have a private room and the cost will be reasonable. Pamela Scott, Paul Cullen, and Lenore Ruckman have graciously offered to supply the wine. The board will cover the corkage fees, hors d'oeuvres and gratuities. We are hoping to make this a festive beginning to the holiday season. Our capable Hospitality Chair, Connie Pelissero, is in charge of the Harvest Dinner and you will find an invitation to this event in this newsletter. It is an important night for our society. We come together and celebrate our past joys and accomplishments, visit with our friends and share a meal. For many years, our incredible Awards Chairperson, Florence Taylor, has chosen someone to accept the Bronze Medal for outstanding service to the Marin Rose Society. This is a surprise for us all! We also install our new officers for We hope this occasion will show how adaptable and resilient our society is and able to welcome change. Please remember if you have a free hour or so, our Rose Garden at MAGC can always use some of your expertise. It has been a source of pleasure for many that frequent the gardens. If you are at MAGC in our garden, look across the way to a magical, colorful, butterfly friendly garden. It is a mystery who is maintaining it and it has been a source of inspiration. Hope we have a splendid Indian Summer ahead with golden days to enjoy our gardens and cool nights to enjoy our dreams. May our roses last into the Fall and may we be filled with gratitude for all we have. Sandy The Marin Rose 4 September 2016

5 Rose Classification Damask Article Correction by Betty Mott It has been brought to my attention by two master rosarians that Rose de Rescht is classified as a Portland Rose in the Modern Roses 12 Data Base. The correct classification if you were to enter Rose de Rescht in an American Rose Society Rose Show would be Portland (P). The source I used for the research for this article was Beales, Peter (1985) Classic Roses, Holt, Rinehart and Winston, New York. Rose de Rescht was originally introduced into England about 1880, but was then forgotten about and re-introduced in the 1940's. The classification of a rose can change and some are reclassified even in our new modern rose introductions. Therefore, it is always best to check the latest addition of American Roses 12 Data Base, especially if you plan to enter the rose in a rose show. The good news is that anyone who has a current membership to the American Rose Society has access to this data base. That is what I did to get the information below on Rose de Rescht. Rose de Rescht P, dp, about 1880, from Iran; flowers bright fuchsia-red, fading with lilac tints, 6 cm., very dbl., rosette, borne mostly singly, intense, damask fragrance; recurrent; foliage dense, medium green, semi-glossy; stems short ; vigorous, compact growth Roses in Review: Garden Rating: 8.8 Exhibition Rating: originally introduced into England about 1880, but was then forgotten about and reintroduced in the 1940 s." Please note that this part of the article on Rose de Rescht in the September Marin Rose newsletter is not correct. One exception is Rose de Rescht which has a similar stature to hybrid teas and floribundas and is a repeat bloomer. It finds its way into many rosarians rose garden collections. 7 PROGRAM NOTES Dr. Susan Kegley, Principal and CEO of Pesticide Research Institute, based in Berkeley, will share valuable information, in our October meeting, about her firm s work on Gardeners Beware, a study documenting the occurrence of systemic pesticides in garden plants at retail outlets. She will provide information on their effects on bees and other pollinators. She ll also provide guidance on available pest management approaches for gardeners to ensure their garden spaces are both attractive and safe for pollinators. You ll learn what you can do to protect pollinators in your own garden and community, and some valuable tips for pollinator-friendly pest management. Don t miss this important talk in October from Dr. Kegley, a leader in risk assessment of pesticides. We were so lucky to have America s favorite gardener and local treasure, Bob Tanem, at our October meeting. Bob s talk was a combination of rose cultivation and development during his career, good practical gardening advice, and some great stories about the ins and outs of gardening and the retail business. Some of his great anecdotes were about the use of MAGC as the site of the county fair for many years. I am sure that most of you were surprised to find out that before the fair moved to it s current location, it was all about the display gardens. Member Connie Pellasaro mentioned that she got hooked on gardening while visiting Bob s nursery in Santa Venetia. I am sure that each of you that attended took away a special piece of information that you will use in your gardening practice. The Marin Rose 7 September 2016

9 Old Roses 101 During the summer I read an article about Old Roses by M.M. Acosta reprinted in The San Francisco Chronicle. If I were planting a garden anew, I would plant Old Roses for their fragrance and beauty and their historical interest. I won t summarize Acosta s advice but refer you to the article which is on SF Gate and was published Wednesday April 30, 2003 under the title above, Old Roses 101. There is a page of Old Rose resources with a newsletter, nurseries, gardens, and photo sites so you can visit gardens to see what the roses look like, and buy root stock in these specialized nurseries. When I looked up Acosta, the writer, I found another Acosta, Ana Marie. She too has been involved in the rose world. She became the 96th Rose Queen in 2014 at the Tournament of Roses in Pasadena. I am not sure being a rose queen has much to do with roses other than riding on rose floats as an ambassador of the Tournament of Roses parade and holding bouquets of roses. The winner attends hundred of events and presides over The Rose Bowl Game. She is given scholarship money, a wardrobe and other benefits. Wouldn t it be wonderful if one of the benefits would be training as a Rosarian? Or she could tour all the major rose gardens in California. This would be a special way to bring the next generation into the world of roses. Through the ages we cultivate each new growth, each generation of roses and of children. May they grow together to realize the beauty and strength they give to the world. Ana Marie Acosta, Rose Parade Queen Crepescule, a climber and an Old Rose Note: American Rose Magazine, September/October 2016, has an article on, Designing for Impact, with Jim Hynd who arranges 100,000 roses for the Tournament of Roses Parade.
