The Marin Rose A non-profit Affiliate of the American Rose Society 2010 Gold Honor Medal Winner 2011 Gold Honor Medal Winner 2012 Gold Honor Medal Winner Volume 41, No. 3 March 2015 General Membership Meeting When Life Gets Too Sticky, Get Thornless Roses Maryann Nardo Floral Design With Roses Tuesday, March 10, :30 pm 750 Lindaro Street San Rafael Corporate Center Inside Highlights When life gets too sticky 1-2 President s Message 3 February 5 Vote for Hall of Fame 6 Program 7 MRS Officers,Directors & Committee Chairs 8 Consulting Rosarians 9 ARS 10 Website 11 Upcoming Events 12 By Frank Treadway, Consulting Rosarian We all are familiar with the sharp objects along a rose stem, commonly called "thorns", technically they are prickles outgrowths of the epidermis (the outer layer of tissue of the stem). True thorns produced by plants such as Citrus or Pyracantha, are modified stems, which always originate at a node and which have nodes and internodes along the length of the thorn itself. On some of my Citrus these are wickedly long rigid and extremely sharp. Rose prickles are typically sickle-shaped hooks, which aid the rose in hanging onto other vegetation when growing over it. Some species such as Rosa rugosa and Rosa pimpinellifolia have densely packed straight prickles, probably an adaptation to reduce browsing by animals, but also possibly an adaptation to trap wind-blown sand and so reduce erosion and protect their roots (both of these species grow naturally on coastal sand dunes). Despite the presence of prickles, roses are frequently browsed by deer. In my garden deer ignore thorns, prickles, and all but the fence surrounding the rose ice cream they covet. They will eat most anything!
A few species of roses have only vestigial prickles that have no points. Some roses are known as thornless or have very few prickles and are good for locations where children play or along paths where people may be scratched as they pass. When we prune, we must protect our hands and arms with gloves that help prevent a puncture wound or nasty scratch. Some prickles can embed the skin and become infected giving pain for several days until the tiny sharp point is removed. Most often washing the area will be enough treatment. There is a disease called Rose Thorn or Rose gardener's disease and is caused by the infection of the fungus Sporothrix schenckii. This fungal disease usually affects the skin but can be more complicated and need medical attention. So we are very cautious and wear protective glasses, gauntlet gloves, and thick clothing when we venture into our work in rose beds. Long reach tools can be used to cut and hold a stem when we cannot easily go into a crowded or dense rose bed. This prompts us to consider how close together we plant roses and to give room for them to grow into their natural shape and size with the thought that we will need to have access to them for years to come. Here are a few examples of roses with a variety of prickles or few at all. The type of prickle or absence of them can help identify the rose. Damask roses have stems densely armed with stout, curved prickles and stiff bristles. They are noted for their intense heavy fragrance. Some are repeat bloomers and grow 3 to 6 feet in size. Rosa 'Mlle Cécile Brünner' is a moderately scented Polyantha shrub short in size but vigorous, with very few prickles. Rosa rugosa, a Species rose, grows in thickets with stems densely covered in numerous short, straight prickles. Rosa moschata, another Species rose, has prickles on the stems that are straight or slightly curved and have a broad base. Rosa canina, Species rose, is the only dog rose without prickles. It is light pink and single. Rosa 'Eden' has dense, dark green foliage with large, semi-glossy leaves, and almost no prickles. Rosa 'Perle d'or', Polyantha, has glossy medium to dark green foliage, and very few scattered, large prickles. Rosa banksiae is a vigorously growing Species rose that can reach to 20 feet tall. Unlike most roses it is practically thornless, though it may bear some prickles up to 5 mm long, particularly on stout, strong older canes. The old garden rose, 'Blush Noisette', is a rather dense shrub with long arching shoots with a reddish color, very few prickles, and many soft, glossy leaves. Rosa 'Charles Austin' - This Shrub cultivar has large leaves and fine, red prickles. Thornless Roses Bleu Magenta (Hybrid Multiflora, mauve) Chloris (Alba, light pink, very fragrant) Goldfinch (Hybrid Multiflora, light yellow/white, fragrant) Hippolyte (Gallica, mauve/red blend) The Marin Rose 2 March 2015
President s Message Your Board is actively working to manage the Society and bring you a fine year of rose events in We approved a list of interesting programs for each monthly meeting and our Program Committee has obtained fine speakers. At the same time the Rose Show Chairs have selected judges for our monthly shows and we are in preparation for the Saturday May 9 th Annual Marin Spring Rose Show to be held the day before Mother s Day at the Northgate Mall location as we did last year. Roses are now putting out many new leaves, buds, and some beginning blooms. This is a very early spring burst of energy and we hope the blossoms will not occur too soon. We want to have a spectacular rose display on May 9 th. Please be sure to put this date on your calendar and bring your roses to enter the show. It is our major chance to put roses before the public and show them all the beauty we enjoy. This encourages new members to join us and get started in this grand adventure. The Board is eager to gain new members to our Society. We have set up a Facebook account and want you to Like It and see what we have. Go to and click on the Liked button to show your support. We welcome your additions and comments. Will you personally ask your friends and neighbors to join us? Try to bring in a new member and share the joy of rose gardening. We have Gift Certificates you can purchase and give to family and friends for membership. Get in touch with any Board Member for these. This year we have a good budget to cover all the expenses and activities we have planned. The Pruning Project has been highly successful this season with 17 volunteers on five Teams visiting more than 100 gardens in Marin to expertly prune their rose bushes. We are on target to earn more than last year. The clients are thrilled to have this service and we are at a point that we will certainly need more volunteers next year to meet the demand. Come let us teach you the skills needed and learn from the best how to take care of all kinds of roses in the dormant season. Spread the word! And a very big Thank You to all the volunteers who did the work on the Pruning Teams! Due to your spirit and high energy we have adequate funds in the bank to expand our events for members this year. We hope to add a member Garden Tour this summer and also some field trips to fabulous public gardens. Look for the announcement in our Marin Rose newsletter and on our fine website Frank Treadway Enter the Marin Spring Rose Show May 9th! The Marin Rose 3 March 2015
Program Notes for February 10, 2015 Finding Friends Among the Roses: Jill Perry entertained the Marin Rose Society on Tuesday evening, February 10, with the great stories and anecdotes that only the curator of a collection of Old Garden Roses could have! A really unique presentation by the Curator of the San Jose Heritage Rose Garden which has 4000 roses on display. Personalities play a large role in the rose identification process, including contacting the owners of old houses, managers of gardens and cemeteries, even the descendants of forgotten burial plots that happen to have interesting roses planted nearby. It even led to some surprising genealogical connections! But it was really about the roses and preserving what might otherwise be lost. It's a fascinating process that Jill shared...even if enthusiasts occasionally identified the same rose multiple times; giving a different name in each instance! In the future, DNA research (currently very expensive) may make rose identification more precise, but, in the meanwhile, for people like Jill and the San Jose Heritage Rose Garden, the fun is in the hunt! Jill, thank you very much for your excellent program. Andrew Smith, Program Committee Photo by S. Simon San Jose Heritage Rose Garden, San Jose, CA The Marin Rose 4 March 2015
You are so beautiful but it is February!!! By Lydia Treadway We are snowed in with all the oaks leaves on our property. We swipe and swipe the leaves and next day just the same. So much work to be done in the garden to prepare for next season. I did not poke around the property for a week or so, and so much is happening. Just a month and the half ago we pruned the roses. It was a big relief to have it done. This year we had planned not to buy new roses. Well, it did not work. Temptations were the winner. With new addition of 12 roses and finding the place in the garden I wanted was going to be difficult, but it was not. So we plant all the roses and are thinking of the new rose season around the corner. It looks like a blink of my eyes everything is changing. Today is Tuesday, 2/24/15, and I could have a beautiful bouquet of roses for our home. Instead I took a picture of some roses to share this with you, dear members. Today was sunny, a clear day, with the blue sky. Pleasure to be out looking at my roses with the reddish tone of shiny leaves just glistering on the sun. OMG, we are going to have an early rose season. The Marin Rose 5 March 2015

Program for March 2015 Maryann Nardo sometimes wonders if she was a flower in a past life as she can't recall a moment when she wasn't obsessed with flowers. As an artist she uses the accuracy of the traditional botanical style in a contemporary way to depict flowers. In the past 5 years her focus has returned to working with living flowers and she picked up where she left off after an apprenticeship with the most sought out designer in Colorado Springs in the 80's. She is now a free-lance floral designer and design teacher at College of Marin. While she has always loved roses, floral designers are fickle and tend to give the favored title to a few type of flowers for awhile, and them cast them aside to pick up with other ones (luckily they are not expected to be monogamous with flowers!). Two years ago roses came back in focus for her when she started buying beautiful Sonoma hoop house grown garden type roses in December. She is also an enthusiastic participant of the Slow Flower Movement that is spearheading momentum for bring flower farming back to this country. The Marin Rose 7 March 2015
