She was a past Vice President, she attended National Conferences, she went on field trips and above all shared her knowledge of roses as a Consulting Rosarian. At present, she is our Awards Chairperson. Florence joined the Marin Rose Society about 20 years ago after her husband Ray Taylor, a San Rafael Fireman of over forty years, died. She had started a rose garden, so her daughter took her to her first rose society meeting and she was smitten. I visited her remarkable garden in the beginning of May and it was in full bloom. Healthy roses were everywhere. New additions were scattered in pots, and the hillside above a paved back porch was surrounded by rose bushes. She led me around the corner saying, This is where most of the roses are. And there in raised beds was an overwhelming collection of roses. She has lived in this lovely home since Florence will be 90 this year and if you try to reach her by , you will see the Italian for grandmother noni is in her address. Her son and daughter have provided four grandchildren and they in turn have had five great-grandchildren. Florence was born in San Rafael where her immigrant parents ran an Italian grocery on C Street The Marin Rose June 2017

2 in San Rafael. That area was like a Little Italy at that time. Her father had learned to make sausages from Molinari s Deli in San Francisco when he first moved to the Bay Area. Like many in North Beach, he had set up his own wine vat in the basement of their two story San Rafael home during Prohibition. There was such an odor of wine, Florence said that she and her sister were forbidden to bring friends into the house. Families were only permitted to make enough wine to supply the family, so he must have exceeded that and wanted to keep it a secret. The Bissola family came from Northern Italy, her father from the Lake Como area and her mother from Gallarte. Florence and her sister worked in the store for many years. She did the store bookkeeping and later used that skill as a volunteer at China Camp to help a schoolmate, Frank Quan. She is a member of the Native Daughters Organization and marched in many parades with their drill team. What is this active lady up to in the future? There is a Nova Scotia trip planned with her daughter. You can t keep down a good gardener! Rozell Overmire Florence in front of another favorite rose, buttery Julia Child. 3 President s Message Sandy Simon and Lenore Ruckman preparing members with tricks of the trade for the Annual Marin Rose Show. Dear Rose Lovers, We all love roses and it was evident at our Monthly Meeting May Rose Show. What a turnout of lovely roses! There seemed to be more then, than at all our monthly Rose shows last year. Fortunately, we had Jolene Adams as judge and she certainly is capable. Speaking of roses, what about our May Rose Show at the Bon Air? Have you ever seen such roses? Words can hardly describe them. It was amazing and the scent in the air, intoxicating. What about our Photography Show? Having it in the same space was unique this year. Bystanders and the public certainly found it of interest. It was creative and made it possible for people to take part that don't necessarily grow roses. There is so much work behind the scenes. People need to go to our storage and bring the trophies, table cloths, extra vases and photo stands. The tables need to be put up then covered in table cloths. The photo stands are put in place and every photo put on them. The trophies are taken out of their boxes and exhibited. Every vase filled with water, entries written, and roses put in place. The judges breakfast needs to be attended. Members are clerking to help the judges before the show opens. The judges need to be taken to a luncheon. Sandwiches are bought for the clerks and eaten, children's bouquets are made, every question answered, and finally roses sold at 4:00pm. Three hundred and fifteen roses were sold, so $315. will be donated to the Center For Domestic Peace in San Rafael. Simultaneously, the roses are brought to the front, vases emptied of water, table cloths folded, tables taken down and stacked, photo stands gathered and loaded in trucks. The trophies, the spare cases of vases and table clothes are loaded and all taken back to our storage. The floors swept. At 5:00pm it was as if some magical event had taken place. It was a 'now you see it, now you don't' kind of experience. In a twinkling of an eye the The Marin Rose 3 June 2017

4 Bon Air site was restored to it's empty, clean space. All that was left are memories of our 43rd May Rose Show and 4th Photography Exhibit. What incredible memories. Congratulations to all who participated! To be part of such a combined effort shows what our society is all about. To jump in and do, in a moment, what needs to be done, is a life affirming experience. We are so lucky that we have members who are able, willing and dedicated. Our society has never been so healthy. We are blessed to be a part of it and watch miracles occur. Joan Goff, our District Director, has announced that there will be a one day Fall Conference chaired by Jolene Adams. It will be Saturday, September 23, 2017 in San Francisco s Castro Valley at the Resurrection Greek Orthodox Church. There will be a Rose show and speakers. More will be revealed. We are delighted to have Burling Leone as our June speaker. She will be bringing roses she has propagated at her nursery for sale and for our raffle. Hope to see you June 13th. 16 Notes from Your Editor Members and other newsletter editors often bring to my attention information that might be of interest to all of our Marin Rose Society members. Here are a few recent ones: The new Vogue magazine for this month has an article about roses! And they said all the clothes that came off the runway in February had roses on them! They have a new rose to commemorate the magazine lasting 125 years! How cool is that? There is also quite an interesting article from a grower in Texas talking about how a rose is hybridized. It would be fascinating to bring a couple of copies of the article to our meeting in June since we are talking about hybridization with Burling Leong. Maryellen O Connell The Vogue 125th Anniversary Rose is Just Peachy. It was developed 10 years ago by Brad Jalbert of Select Roses, near Vancouver, as a cross between Loretta Lynn Van Lear and Julia Child. It is available through Jackson & Perkins and also on the Vogue Magazine Website. R.Overmire Congratulations are in order to you, Betty Mott and Cheryl Frechette for writing articles that received an Award of Merit for 2016 in the American Rose Magazine. These awards are made yearly to Newsletter authors. Cheryl s article was on Albas from our July/August issue, Betty s two articles on China and Centifolia were in April and June, Rozell s article on Learning from Lufthansa was in July. Sandy Simon A Note from a Happy Customer A note appeared on Maryellen O Connell s door from Grace Ricco-Penna: Hi Maryellen, I was lucky enough to have the pruning party prune my roses this year and WOW what a payoff! Please convey my gratitude to all the wonderful pruners. New Campaign Aims to Reduce Use of Toxic Weed Killer A new campaign, YardSmartMarin.org, aims to reduce the use of chemical weed killer by Marin residents. The Think Before You Spray campaign is the result of a collaboration of Marin County, the Integrated Pesticide Management Commission, and concerned community representatives. The goal is to raise awareness of alternatives to using toxic weed killer, particularly among weekend or occasional gardeners who may be more apt to use a quick spray rather than hand weeding or other non-toxic methods of control. In addition to extensive local media advertising, representatives of a citizen coalition will represent the campaign on the ground at various events and locations across the county. Your help in spreading the word about this important cause is most appreciated. Please sign up for updates at YardSmartMarin.org. Nanette Londeree The Marin Rose 16 June 2017

17 Planting Rose Bushes with Grape Vines In driving through wine country a few weekends ago, we began to speculate the reasons why roses are frequently planted at the perimeter of vineyards. Was it the need for the same soil and sun? Could they be an early warning system for the grapevines? Disease on the roses would alert winemakers to take precautions. Besides their beauty, roses might attract bees and other beneficial insects. So when we returned home, we found a San Francisco Chronicle article on the subject at SFGATE. Here is what they said: Early Warning System California is the nation's leading producer of both both wine and table grapes. Grapevines and roses are prone to infestation of a fungus known as powdery mildew (Oidium) that flourishes in warm, Mediterranean-type climates. During California's dry summer and autumn, powdery mildew is the biggest problem in local vineyards. Roses are more susceptible than grape vines, so if powdery mildew appears on the roses, it is a warning to immediately spray the vineyard with sulfur. Although sulfur does not cure powdery mildew, it will prevent it. Downy mildew is another deadly mildew that attacks all the green parts of the grape vine. Once Downy mildew is detected on the rose bushes, the grape vines are immediately sprayed with a solution of copper sulphate and lime. Planting Roses Roses do best in well-drained, nutrient rich soil. Roses are planted by digging a hole 8 to 12 inches wider and deeper than the root mass of the rose and amending the soil with herbivore -- cow, horse, sheep, goat, lama -- manure or organic compost. An ideal planting media for roses contains potting soil, peat moss, horticultural sand and organic compost or well-aged manure. The roots of bare root roses are soaked in a tub of water for 24 to 48 hours prior to planting. Roses are planted with the knob or bud union positioned below the soil. After spreading the roots out in the planting hole, potting media is added to fill all the spaces around and under the roots. Bare-root roses are planted in the spring, after all danger of frost. Potted roses are planted in much the same manner. The pot is removed, the rose placed in a prepared hole, the roots spread out and the hole filled with soil and watered. Many growers plant a variety of white roses at the ends of the rows of white grapes and red rose varieties adjacent to rows of red grapes. Water Both roses and grape vines require consistent moisture. Newly planted roses are watered well during the planting process to eliminate air pockets around the root and watered again after planting. Roses require approximately 1 inch of water per week to produce healthy roses. Many growers also plant lavender and rosemary along with roses, near their grape vines, as the fragrant herbs repel many harmful insects and add a pleasant flavor to the wine. Clumps of lavender and rosemary are planted 12 to 18 inches apart. Rose Selection Many ever-blooming rose varieties have the same ph, moisture and nutrient requirements as grapevines. Both roses and grapes flourish with 4 to 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. Roses are often planted along vineyard fences, around gated entryways or in flower beds around structures and fixtures. Climbing roses enhance arbors, trellises or fences. Miniature or dwarf varieties can be used to line paths and walkways. The Marin Rose 17 June 2017
