1 The Marin Rose A non-profit Affiliate of the American Rose Society 2010 Gold Honor Medal Winner 2011 Gold Honor Medal Winner 2012 Gold Honor Medal Winner Volume 39, No. 10 October 2013 Great Roses for Marin By Joan Goff Tuesday, October 8, :30 pm 750 Lindaro Street San Rafael Inside Highlights Rose Slipping 1 2 President s Message 3 Program Notes 4 It Is Tough To Be Young 5 Eureka 6 Monthly Rose show 7-8 Harvest Dinner Slate of Officers 10 Rose Slipping By Maureen Groper, Consulting Rosarian On a recent visit to San Diego a friend filled her house with the exquisite pink roses from her garden. Upon examination I was thrilled to find the rose tag still attached to the bush. Dolores Hope, the wife of Bob Hope, was lucky to have such a beautiful rose named after her. I called every nursery in the area and though many had heard of the rose no one had it in stock. It wasn t listed in the ARS Selecting Roses. When I looked it up on the internet, the rose had the commercial name WEKcrying, was bred by Tom Carruth and introduced in the US by Armstrong Garden Centers in I was truly in a quandary. I called Gail Trimble, our resident rose breeder, and learned more about the rose in a source Modern Roses that you must subscribe to for information. In another source called Combined Rose List, she found that the rose was not commercially available for some reason. What was I to do? I had heard that several members in our Society were really good at slipping roses. That s taking cuttings from rose bushes and using them to start new plants. Gail very generously offered to help me try and propagate this special rose. I brought three cuttings home with me. I learned that there are two ways to proceed..the long way and the short cut. The long method was used on my three cuttings. The soil mixture is important; we used a combination of Master Nursery Potting Soil and Planting Mix (available at West End Nursery), bone or blood meal and worm castings for the slow nitrogen. The treatment of the cutting is very important. It must have a terminal bud and have at least 4-6 leaf buds, two above the soil and two below. The bud and the lower leaves are removed and the stem cut 1/16 below the bottom budeye. The stem is then dipped in Rootone, blowing off the excess, and buried up to the leaflets. A bit of water is added. The 4 inch pot is placed in a clean gallon baggy. A concoction of 1/8 t water soluble fertilizer, 1/8 t baking soda, 16 oz water and three drops of Dawn dishwashing detergent is sprayed into the bag. This supplies nutrients and prevents mildew. A chopstick is stuck in the pot to hold the baggy away from the plant. The bag is partially closed. Using a straw we blew into the bag to partially inflate it before it was sealed. I brought these treasures home and placed them upright in filtered sun. I opened them once to extract some dead leaves. I understand if successful it takes about 2 months to see new leaf growth and roots coming out of the bottom. At that time I will begin opening the bag gradually to acclimate it, release the moisture and harden my new plant.

2 Gail helped me on June 29 and at this writing it has been 8 weeks. Two of my little bags contain little black mildewed stems but the other is still green so I am optimistic. Maybe you will see a Dolores Hope rose at one of our rose shows in 2014! I am so hopeful! Maureen s cuttings Flo s cuttings We are fortunate in our Society to have many members who also slip roses. Dorothy Arnold, Flo Taylor and Sandy Simon were kind enough to share their secrets with me. By and large their favorite time to gather cuttings is when they prune in January/February. All are members of our pruning teams so they have a myriad of sources. All agreed though that when the opportunity presents itself they will. Like Gail, it is best to begin with a 6-8 inch cutting with a terminal bud and at least 6 leaf buds. Flo places her cuttings in water for several days before preparing and planting. The terminal bud is cut off and so are the leaves on the lower half of the stem. There should be 2-3 buds below the soil and 2-3 above. Sandy makes her cut just below the lowest bud as does Gail. Sandy dips her cuttings into Rootone, shaking off the excess but neither Flo or Dorothy use it. All are planted in good potting mix, watered and placed in dappled shade. Sounds pretty simple but I have yet to try. It is agreed that some roses are much easier to propagate than others so it s best not to get discouraged. Dorothy feels she has much more luck with miniatures. It sounds like Iceberg is almost guaranteed success so if you want to experiment maybe start here! Anyway it sounds like fun and who knows it may motivate you to become a rose hybridizer like our own Gail Trimble. Dolores Hope is a beautiful rose The Marin Rose 2

3 President s Message Summer has left us and now with the Solstice we are in fall and our weather shows us the cooling trend and scattered showers we expected. I like the change of seasons and the anticipation of gradual and subtle slowing of growth in the garden. Hips are appearing even though we do have lots of color in the roses. It is time to deadhead and pick up the leaves. We applied some mild fertilizer for the last push of bloom that often comes in October. Roses can be beautiful right now. Our last rose show had some grand specimens and we do want you to bring in more roses at the October rose show. Our new location at 750 Lindaro is a refreshing change. The Tamalpais Room is comfortable, spacious, and has good light. Outside we have convenient lighted parking and there is a Security Guard present. This has turned out to be an excellent facility for us and we are pleased at the welcome from the Seagate Management team at the San Rafael Corporate Center. This central location serves as a midpoint for the County and people from southern, northern, and western Marin can come to meetings with ease. The October meeting is important in that we will receive nominations for the Board positions open and the proposed slate of Officers will be presented for your approval. We do this every year in October and then have the installation at our November 12 th Harvest Dinner. We will be calling you to confirm if you are attending the November Dinner to make sure we have nice table decorations and plenty of food for all our members. This is always a happy and pleasant event to socialize and spread the joy of the Rose growing season. Please plan on joining us! Your Board is making plans for the year 2014 with a new set of programs, extra events, and the District Conference one year from now in San Rafael. This Conference will bring together the 27 rose societies of the District with speakers who are very well respected, a rose show, and a gala banquet. We are very active in continuing the success of the Marin Rose Society and this includes your participation and great ideas. Our members are very wonderful people! 4 Program Notes October 8, 2013 Joan Goff will be our speaker for the October 8 th meeting. Joan is a member of the Marin Rose Society (18 years) and is also a member of the Redwood Empire Rose Society in Santa Rosa. In June 2012, she moved into a rental house in Sonoma and had hoped to buy a new home in Sonoma; however, she recently purchased a new house in San Rafael! So back to Marin she comes along with her many potted roses and dog, Mazie. Her new house needs a total face lift so her moving dates will be in late September and early October. Joan is a Master Rosarian and a Horticultural Judge. She is also a Master Gardener and has a small consulting business, Roses and Much More. Joan is also the Deputy District Director for our District. Her presentation for our October meeting will be a power point slide presentation, Great Roses for Marin, showing photos of all the best roses one can grow in Marin County. She also plans to show photos of the Shady Ladies roses, time permitting. This most popular presentation was previously shown in Marin and Joan plans to update it with new photos. PROGRAM NOTES SEPTEMBER 10, 2013 Gisele Schoniger of Kellogg Products provided a large display of their organic soils. If you missed the meeting, she donated lots of their soils for our Raffle table. I believe everyone won more than one prize. She encouraged us to move into half chemical and half organic practice regarding our attention to the soil. Kellogg has been helping people create beautiful landscapes and gardens since She talked about transitioning from synthetics to Natural, Organic and Sustainable practices. Feeding the soil and mulching produces thick stems, healthy leaves and flowers. Micro-organisms stay in the soil and change it's composition. Four very good products they produce are Amend--for our clay soils, Gro-Mulch, Topper, Earth Worm Castings, and Patio Plus. Most of these are sold at Home Depot, United Market Nursery and Goodman's here in Marin. Lenore Ruckman 1st VP / Program Chair The Marin Rose 4 October 2013

5 It Is Tough To Be Young By Lydia Treadway, Editor and Master Rosarian I was playing, jumping, leaping and almost flying with my cousins. My Mama supervises all my moves and protects me from unwanted fights. It is so much fun but I do get tired and sleepy. I have my favorite place to unwind and relax that is nested in the bed of ivy, surrounded with oak trees and very quiet. With just a little run I am in my favorite place. Settling down on ivy and making my comfortable bed, I feel myself falling asleep. Being thirsty and hungry I am thinking of my Mama s milk and the Treadway s organic roses. On the other hand let me dream about Mama s milk first. It is a sure thing. After I wake up, I will see what I can do to get those roses. I know this garden. It was my first nursery when I was a very little Bambi. I used to curl up under the leaves of the cabbage plants. In the early morning when the Treadways came to water, I would jump up startled, and scare the life out of them. I am finding it difficult to get in the garden now that I have put on weight. I just keep growing and trying to go back to see the garden but no luck yet. I am too big to get through the fence. It is so hard on me looking at the yummy roses. I didn t know how to eat those roses when I was a tiny fawn. Now I have a big appetite for all those sweet and fragrant roses. Just you wait and see if I can get some! 6 Eureka! By Lydia Treadway, Master Rosarian and Editor Photo by Lydia Treadway I have a hard time to say, I love this rose, this is my favorite rose. It makes me feel that I do not appreciate my other roses. For me, Eureka comes very high in the category of likes. This apricot and apricot-yellow blend has dazzling clusters of recurrent, wavy peddled, old-fashioned looking blooms with a light fragrance. If you like this color, this may be your eureka moment! This 2003 AARS award winner is an excellent choice for spreading color through the landscape or among perennial plantings. It sets large clusters of apricot to apricotcopper blossoms that hold their hue to the end of the season. Eureka shows exceptional vigor and disease resistance, and although its fragrance is not significant, its color is unbeatable, especially when planted in groups for maximum impact! In my garden I have two standard Eureka tree roses and they keep blooming.
