INTRODUCTION Welcome Intensive farming has taken its toll on our flora and fauna in the last 100 years. You only have to travel through parts of France and Europe to rediscover wildflowers in abundance on their less intensive systems. With our use of effective herbicides and efficient farming, rare arable weeds (wildflowers) have been removed or kept dormant from the landscape. This has a knock-on effect to soil and insects, mammals and birds - which all benefit from pollen and nectar-producing flowering plants. All is not lost, as over the last 10 years UK farming has benefited from government environmental schemes to encourage less intensive farming and to plant specific winter feed crops for troubled target species. This also includes arable reversions and restoration of floristically enhanced grassland. The uptake of such environmental schemes is increasing throughout the farming community and is slowly restoring the countryside to its former glory. 4 1 Standard wildflower mixture This mixture will give you some good colour in the first year from the Cornfield Annuals and from then on you will start to see more and more of the other species. Suitable for most soil types. The companion grass is of standard nature to suit most situations. 2.5 Cornflower Centaurea cyanus Blue/Purple Corn Marigold Chrysanthemum segetum Yellow Corn Cockle Agrostemma githago Purple Corn Chamomile Anthemis arvensis Yellow Field Poppy Papaver rhoeas Red Oxeye Daisy Leucanthermum vulgare White Salad Burnet Sanguisorba minor Green/Red Common Sainfoin Onobrychis viciifolia Pink Yarrow Achillea millefolium White Yellow Rattle Rhinanthus minor Yellow Betony Stachys officianlis Red/Pink Common Knapweed Centaurea nigra Purple Common Sorrel Rumed acetosa Red White Campion Silene alba White Ragged Robin Lychnis flos-culi Pink Lady s Bedstraw Galium verum Yellow Agrimony Agrimonia Yellow Birdsfoot Trefoil Lotus coniculartus Yellow Field Scabious Knautia arvensis Violet/Blue Meadow Buttercup Ranunculus bulbosus Yellow Self Heal Prunella vulgaris Blue/Purple Red Campion Silene dioica Deep Pink Companion grasses 40 Slender Creeping Red Fescue Festca rubra litoralis 20 Crested Dogstail Cynosurus cristatus 15 Sheeps Fescue Festuca ovina 5 Meadow Foxtail Alopecurus pratensis 5 Sweet Vernal Grass Anthoxanthum odoratum 5 Small Leafed Timothy Phleum bertolonii 10 Common Bentgrass Agrostis castellana 100% Wildflower Mixture 86 per kg + VAT 80% Grass 20% Wildflowers 46 per kg + VAT - Sowing rate 3-5 grams per m²
2 Old English meadow mixture This traditional old English mix is based on common and well known species, traditionally multiplied up by late hay production. A good general purpose wildflower mix. Should not be grazed with livestock. 2 Cowslip Primula veris Yellow Yarrow Achillea millifolium White Common Vetch Vicia Sativa Purple/Blue Ladys Bedstraw Galium verum Yellow Ox-eye Daisy Leucanthermum vulgare White Bulbous Buttercup Ranunculous bulbous Yellow Self Heal Prunella vulgaris Purple Birdsfoot Trefoil Lotus coniculartus Yellow Salad Burnet Sanguisorba minor ssp Red/Purple Black Medick Medicago lupilina Yellow Red Campion Silene dioica Red Common Knapweed Centaurea nigra Purple Ribwort Plantain Plantago lanceolata White/Pink Wild Carrot Daucus carota White White Campion Silene alba White Yellow Rattle Rhinanthus minor Yellow Wild Clary Salvia verbenaca Blue Sorrel Common Rumed acetosa Red Greater Knapweed Centaurea scabiosa Purple Sainfoin Onovrychis viciifolia Red Companion grasses 20 Chewing Fescue Festuca rubra ssp commutata 10 Sheeps Fescue Festuca ovina 25 Slender Red Fescue Fesctuca Rubra ssp pruinosa 15 Strong Red Fescue Festuca rubra subspecies 15 Smooth Stalked Meadow Grass Poa pratensis 7 Crested Dogtail Cynosurus cristatus 3 Common Bentgrass Agrostis castellana 5 Meadow Fescue Festuca Pratensis 100% Wildflower Mixture 88 per kg + VAT 80% Grass 20% Wildflowers 46 per kg + VAT Sowing rate 3-5 grams per per m²
3 Calcareous soils mixture This mixture is suited to calcareous soils and all light loamy ground. It also lends itself to banks and steeper sides. Like most wildflower meadows it takes a few years to establish but will be a really good show of species. 7.5 Oxeye Daisy Leucanthemum vulgare White Salad Burnet Sanguisorba minor Red/ Purple Red Campion Silene dioica Red Lady s Bedstraw Galium verum Yellow Yellow Rattle Rhinanthus minor Yellow Self Heal Prunella vulgaris Blue/Purple Hoary Plantain Plantago media Pink Creeping Buttercup Ranunculus repens Yellow Meadow Buttercup Ranunculus bulbosus Yellow Meadow Sweet Filipendula ulmaria White Meadow Cranesbill Geranium pratense Violet Kidney Vetch Anthyllis vulneraria Yellow Common Knapweed Centaurea nigra Purple Field Scabious Knautia arvensis Lilac/Blue Devils Bit Scabious Succisa pratensis Blue Small Scabious Scabiosa culumbaria Pink Yarrow Achillea millefolium White Wild Carrot Daucus carota White Common Sainfoin Onobrychis viciifolia Pink Cowslip Primula veris Yellow 5-10 Companion grasses 35 Slender Creeping Red Fescue Festca Rubra litoralis 20 Crested Dogstail Cynosurus cristatus 10 Sheeps Fescue Festuca ovina 5 Yellow Oatgrass Trisetum flavescens 5 Sweet Vernal Grass Anthoxanthum odoratum 10 Cocksfoot Dactylis glomerata 15 Common Bentgrass Agrostis castellana 100% Wildflower Mixture 88 per kg + VAT 80% Grass 20% Wildflowers 46 per kg + VAT Sowing rate 3-5 grams per per m²
4 Woodland clearing As the mixture suggests, it is ideal for shaded areas on the edge of the woodland or clearings. It should show a good array of colour with some well known traditional species. This mixture will take some time to get established but well worth the wait. 2.5 Wood Sage Teucrium scorodonia Green/Yellow Betony Stachys officinalis Red/Pink Agrimony Agrimonia Yellow Bellflower Campanula trachelium Purple Ramsons Allium ursinum White St Johns Wort Hypericum hirsutum Yellow Angelica Angelica sylvestris White Bluebell Hyacinoides nonscripta Blue Hedge Bedstraw Galium mollugo White Meadowsweet Filipendula ulmaria White Stitchwort Greater Stellaria holostea White Foxglove Digitalis purpurea Pink Tufted Vetch Vicia cracca Blue/Purple Garlic Mustard Alliaria petiolata White Teasel Dipsacus fullonum ssp sylvestris Purple Upright Hedge Parlsey Torillis japonica White Hedge Woundwort Stachys sylvatica Pink Red Campion Silene dioica Red Primrose Primula vulgaris Yellow 5-20 Companion grasses 5 Browntop Bentgrass Agrosti capillaris 20 Wood Meadow Grass Poa nemoralis 20 Sheeps Fescue Festuca ovina 15 Chewings Fescue Festuca rubra ssp commutata 15 Slender Red Fescue Fesctuca Rubra ssp pruinosa 5 Tufted Hairgrass Deschampsia caespitosa 20 Crested Dogstail Cynosurus cristatus 100% Wildflower Mixture 98 per kg + VAT 80% Grass 20% Wildflowers 49 per kg + VAT Sowing rate 3-5 grams per per m²

9 Economy wildflower mixture This is a very versatile mixture, hard wearing, fast establishing and will produce plenty of variety and colour. The mixture contains most of the common legumes and wildflowers available and can be used in many different situations. Excellent for drought prone areas and with its deep rooted species it works well to stabilise steep banks and verges. 4 Cornflower Centaurea cyanus Blue/Purple Corn Marigold Chrysanthemum segetum Yellow Corn Cockle Agrostemma githago Purple Corn Chamomile Anthemis arvensis Yellow Field Poppy Papaver rhoeas Red Oxeye Daisy Leucanthermum vulgare White Lucurne Medicargo sative Blue Salad Burnet Sanguisorba Minor Ssp minor Red/Purple Sainfoin Onovrychis viciifolia Red Yarrow Achillea millifolium White Yellow Rattle Rhinanthus minor Yellow Black Knapweed Centaurea nigra Purple Ribgrass Plantago lanceolata White /Pink White Campion Silene alba White Ladies Bedstraw Galium verum Yellow Birdsfoot Trefoil Lotus coniculartus Yellow Meadow Buttercup Ranunculus bulbosus Yellow Self Heal Prunella vulgaris Blue/Purple Red Campion Silene dioica Red Companion grasses 50 Slender Creeping Red Fescue Festca Rubra Litoralis 18.8 Meadow Fescue Festuca Pratensis 18.8 Sheeps Fescue Festuca Ovina 12.4 Common Bent Agrostis Castellana 100% Wildflower Mixture 66 per kg + VAT 80% Grass 20% Wildflowers 36 per kg + VAT Sowing rate 3-5 grams per per m²
10 cornfield annuals These fast growing brightly coloured annuals provide extensive cover all summer long and will look a picture the first two years. Because this mix is made up from annuals, they rely on dropping their seed for growth on the following year. After the first year, it is a good idea to lightly cultivate the land to promote early new spring growth. Cornfield annual mix generally lasts one to three years depending on management. 20 Cornflower Centaurea cyanus Blue/Purple Corn Marigold Chrysanthemum segetum Yellow Corn Chamomile Anthemis arvensis Yellow Corn Cockle Agrostemma githago Purple Field Poppy Papaver rhoeas Red % Wildflower Mixture 64 per kg + VAT Sowing rate 3-5 grams per per m² Cornfield Annuals

13 Brush Harvested seed and service Brush harvesting of wildflower seed is a responsible and sustainable way of harvesting wildflower meadows and an excellent way of replicating good mixtures. We brush harvest local county seed from native wildflower down land and meadows which is available for sale. The seed we harvest is certified by Natural England and can be used under ELS and HLS schemes or where local and native providence is important. Because of the nature of the wildflower meadows, the seed which we take off can be all different sizes and therefore becomes a mixture very difficult to regulate and clean. The brush harvested seed will contain small grass stems so therefore drilling the seed is not possible and is best mixed with sand and broadcast. We also offer our brush harvesting service and would be happy to quote for local work which can include harvesting, cleaning and drying.

Sowing and management instructions for wildflowers Site and soil preparation Try to avoid high fertile soil. Usual sowing rate approx: 5-7 grams / m 2 One of the most important things to remember is to start with a weed free seed bed to reduce the weeds from competing with the wild flowers. Cultivate the ground and if possible leave until you get a really good show of weed growth. Then spray off with Glyphosate following the manufacturer s instructions. In an ideal situation you should do this twice. 1 Cultivate and spray off any weeds. 2 Mix the seed well in the bag/box before planting. If you are having problems drilling or broadcasting by hand you can mix with a fine dry sand to give some weight to the seed. 3 Broadcast or drill the seed into a clean weed-free seedbed. 4 Roll the ground before (preferably ring roll) then flat roll after planting. Important maintenance Once you have sown the mixture it is very important to manage the growth for the first year. This includes cutting and weeding if possible. If sowing in the autumn, cut the sward when the grass gets established and keep it down to help the flower seeds to germinate. If sowing in the spring, again keep the grass low for the first growing season. Whenever you cut, it is vital to remove all the material. After establishment maintenance Very easy: in the spring, cut to 10cm and remove the cuttings. Cut again after flowering in the autumn. Job done!
