Plant List (Preliminary) May 2014 HART/HARRISON BRIDGEHAMPTON TREES Persian Ironwood (Parrotia persica) Parrotia persica has one of the most beautiful foliage displays, in addition to year-round eye appeal and ease of maintenance. Reddish-purple when unfolding in spring, the leaves are a lustrous dark green in summer, and yellow to orange or scarlet in fall. Leaves hold their color for a long period. Older branches and trunks develop an exfoliating gray, green, white, and brown color that is a welcome asset in the winter garden. Often, vegetatively propogated forms offer more reliable fall color. Bark exfoliates with age. Tiny red flowers in winter. Mount Vernon English Laurel (Prunus laurocerasus) An exceptionally useful small shrub, it s a dense, tidy evergreen mound in the garden. This dwarf form of the aggressive English laurel does not flower or set seed. It is not invasive in the garden or in our native habitat. Its compact growth rarely exceeds 2 feet tall and its slow spread to 4 or 5 feet wide makes it an excellent and well-mannered groundcover; carries the tough, rugged qualities of its larger more domineering counter part. It tolerates drought, poor urban soils, and dry shade. Use it for a low informal bed border or small hedge, or as a groundcover under trees and large shrubs. Flowering Dogwood (Cornus florida Cloud Nine ) Prolific, large, pure white, overlapping petal-like blooms in spring, dark green foliage in the summer, red-purple leaves in the fall with glossy red berries that persist into winter make this a lovely ornamental tree for all seasons. It has a short trunk, horizontal branches, and a moderately globeshaped crown. The dense branching provides shade and nesting sites, fruit and buds are a favorite with dozens of bird species, and the nectar and pollen attract butterflies. Dogwoods prefer acidic, moist, well drained sites with partial shade, but will take full sun. This is one of the most cold hardy cultivars. Natchez Crape Myrtle (Lagerstroemia indica) A large shrub or small tree with smooth, dark cinnamonbrown exfoliating bark. Glossy dark green leaves turn vibrant orange-red in fall. Panicles of pure white, soft textured flowers bloom all summer. Makes an excellent specimen, accent or group planting. Deciduous.

Loebner Magnolia (Magnolia loebneri Dr.Merrill ) Asian Pear Staked Espalier It has star-shaped flowers (3 to 5 inches across) with 10 to 14 narrow white petals, sometimes tinted in lilac-purple or pale pink. The blossoms are fragrant and appear before the leaves in mid-spring. Loebner magnolia grows to 30 feet tall. SHRUBS Azalea x Robled Azalea Autumn Coral Boxwood (Buxus sempervirens) Easily pruned into topiary shapes or a formal hedge. Also good for containers and foundation plantings. Evergreen. Camellia Japonica April Tryst This extremely cold-hardy, broadleaf evergreen shrub to small tree has an upright, bushy habit. Developed by Dr. Clifford Parks in North Carolina, April Tryst provides year-round interest due to its glossy dark green leaves and smooth gray bark. From late winter to spring, its rounded buds open to present many large, bright red, anemone-form flowers. The following year s flower buds are set shortly after they bloom, so if needed, prune them directly after flowering.

Camellia X 'Winter's Snowman' Camellia 'Rosehill Red' Very dark green, glossy foliage is the backdrop for lovely red semi double anemone form flowers. Blooms in mid spring. Evergreen. The new Ice Angels series extends the timeless beauty of Camellias beyond their traditional range. Pink buds open to white, semi-double to anemone form flowers in winter. Wine red colored new leaves. Mid season bloomer. Evergreen. Sweet Pepperbush, Anne Bidwell or Summersweet (Clethra alnifolia) A profusion of fragrant white flower spikes attract butterflies. Upright, rounded shrub is effective in mass, mixed into perennial borders or along foundations. Native to the eastern United States; perfect for naturalizing in woodland gardens. Blooms on current season growth. Grows well in wet areas. Deciduous. Hydrangea (Hardy Hydrangea) Little Lime (Hydrangea paniculata 'Jane' PPAF) A new dwarf form of the popular Limelight Hydrangea, Little Lime sports the same great flower power but in a smaller package. Attractive green summer flowers turn pink in fall. This hardy selection is excellent for use in mixed border or foundation plantings. Daphne burkwoodii 'Carol Mackie' Small pale pink fragrant blossoms cloak the small leaves with a yellow margin that matures to creamy whites. Popular and very easy to grow in marginally fertile soils. Ideal for beds, borders and foundation plantings. Semievergreen. Natchez Mock Orange (Philadelphus Natchez ) Fountain-shaped shrub is noted for its large, showy white blooms, which have the fragrance of orange blossoms. Branches are covered with lush green foliage for an attractive effect even when not in flower. Planted in mass, makes an ideal fast growing screen. Deciduous.

Schwoebel's Upright Japanese Holly (ilex crenata 'Schwoebel Upright') Valued for its distinctive upright form and foliage, this variety has dense glossy medium green flat leaves; commonly used for screening; protect from winter winds; can be sheared for a formal appearance; has attractive dark green foliage. The small glossy oval leaves are ornamentally significant but remain dark green through the winter. Heller's Japanese Holly (ilex crenata 'Helleri') An easy to grow shrub that makes a good hedge or low border in partially shaded areas in the landscape. Needs no pruning, making this a true, low maintenance shrub. Showy black berries add interest in fall. Evergreen. Nellie R. Stevens Holly (ilex x 'Nellie R. Stevens') Densa Inkberry Holly (ilex glabra 'Densa') One of the most attractive of all hollies. Vigorous grower with dense branches makes an excellent tall screen. Producer of large bright orange-red berries. Use male Chinese hollies as pollenizers. Upright branches are covered with leathery, dark green leaves. Black, berry-like fruit is produced fall through spring. Withstands heavy pruning quite well. Thrives in moist soils and is shade tolerant. Evergreen. Rhododendron maximum Rhododendron Rosebay Pink (Rhododendron maximum Roseum) Evergreen, thicket-forming shrub or tree with short, crooked trunk, broad, rounded crown of many stout, crooked branches, and large white blossoms. Great-laurel or rosebay rhododendron is a loose, open, broadleaf evergreen with multiple-trunks, upright branching, and the largest leaves of all native rhododendrons. A vigorous, wide, upright grower with dark, glossy, evergreen foliage. Hardy and adaptable to extremes in cold, heat and humidity. Large clusters of clear pink flowers bloom in late May. Excellent choice for screening or foundation planting. Grows in sun to moderate shade to a height of 6-8', taller if left unpruned. 4

VINES Rosa New Dawn Fragrant, blush pink, double flowers cover this large climbing rose. Glossy dark green foliage and abundant rose hips in autumn add to the show for months of show stopping curb appeal. Great choice for the trellis or arbor of cottage or country gardens. Climbing Hydrangeas (Hydrangea anomala petiolaris) Climbing hydrangeas (Hydrangea anomala petiolaris) have creamy white lacecap-type flowers. These hydrangeas can be trained against walls, fences and trellises, and they leave behind interesting woody stems in winter when the leaves have fallen. Plus: Teepee trellises can be found in English gardens and are often called tuteurs. A loose translation of the word tuteur is a garden tower to train plants on. Clematis Primrose Introduced from Japan in the 1970s, this attractive clematis has creamy yellow flowers, which fade to white as they age. Best suited to a warm wall in this country, it does best in hot climates. To prune, remove any dead or weak stems in late winter or early spring and cut remaining stems back to the highest pair of strong-growing buds. To encourage blooms to cover the whole plant, train the stems so that they are evenly spaced on their support. As new growth appears in mid-spring, train this to fill any gaps. Deciduous climber. Clematis Etoile Violette 'Etoile Violette' is a deciduous, small-flowering, semi-woody climbing clematis vine (Viticella group), which typically grows 10-12' and features deep purple flowers (3-4" diameter) with conspicuous tufts of golden stamens. Sepals are blunt-tipped. Profuse summer bloom. Pinnately trifoliate medium green foliage darkens as the summer progresses.

PERENNIALS Lily of the Valley (Convallaria majalis) A sweetly scented (and highly poisonous) woodland flowering plant that is native throughout the cool temperate Northern Hemisphere in Asia, Europe and in the southern Appalachian Mountains in the United States. Hellebores (Helleborus) Commonly known as hellebores, members of the genus Helleborus comprise approximately 20 species of herbaceous or evergreen perennial flowering plants. We have 40 in March/April bloom, purple, and white. Hosta (Hosta Sieboldi Elegans) Lady's Mantle (Alchemilla mollis) A desirable restrained form of the species. Graygreen scalloped foliage forms a ground cover when planted in mass. Plant as a low border or cascading from containers. Flowers and foliage are good for cutting. A dependable large blue hosta, Elegans creates a dramatic effect when planted in mass in the landscape. A mature patch of Elegans is dense and will crowd out garden weeds. The leaves are heartshaped, corrugated and thick-textured. GROUND COVERS Liriope Big Blue Tufted evergreen ground cover plants with arching, grass like foliage. Bowles' Common Periwinkle (Vinca minor 'Bowles') Ground covers for shade, displaying large violet blue pinwheel shaped flowers against glossy dark green leaves. Blooms in late spring through summer. Evergreen perennial. 6
