1 Inventory of Ash Trees in Paxton, Illinois

2 East Central Illinois Master Naturalists Inventory of Ash Trees in Paxton, Illinois The Advisory Board of the East Central Illinois Master Naturalists (ECIMN) program has initiated an inventory of ash trees in this region to determine the potential for damage due to an infestation by the emerald ash borer (Agrilus planipennis, or EAB for short). The purposes of this inventory are to estimate the magnitude of the potential problem in east central Illinois and to alert public officials in communities within the region. This report identifies the locations and health of ash trees in Paxton. ECIMN volunteers have field experience in the subject of this report, but they are not trained professionals. Before taking any action, expert advice should be solicited. The EAB was identified in Michigan about ten years ago and has spread to adjoining states. This pest was detected in the nearby towns of Rantoul in the fall of 2010, Champaign in the spring of 2012 and Danville in the spring of 2014, but has not yet been detected in Paxton. Ash trees of the Fraxinus genus (all common ash trees, but not mountain ash) that have EAB start showing decline in one to three years and ultimately are completely killed. Insecticide treatment options may be viewed on state <agr.state.il.us/eab> and federal <emeraldashborer.info> websites. Either insecticide treatment or removal and disposal of ash trees will be a costly budget item that could be planned for rather than dealt with on an emergency basis. Dead ash trees are a public and personal safety issue, and early planning and replacement by other trees will ameliorate the visual devastation caused by the loss of ash trees. The inventory in Paxton was done on August 3, 10 and 17, on September 14 and on October 3, It was conducted by driving along the streets in Paxton and identifying ash trees. The street location and condition of ash trees that could be identified from public roads were tabulated. Their latitude and longitude were recorded using a handheld GPS device and subsequently uploaded onto a satellite map of the area. Whether the trees appeared to be on public or private land was recorded. It is estimated that more than 90% of the public roads/streets were included in this inventory. On the attached maps each numbered flag shows the location of one or more ash trees that could be seen from that point. The flag numbers correspond to entries in the table that follows the maps. Except for a few cases, the assessment of the health of the trees was made from a distance and was qualitative, because a more exact description would require careful inspection of each tree. The trees are listed in the table as healthy (H), waning (W), sick (S), or dead (D). Waning is used to designate a tree that was mostly alive, but had more than one or two dead branches; sick designates a tree that was mostly dead with a few live branches. The table has separate columns for trees on public and private land. These are approximate designations, since it was not always clear whether the trees were on public or private property. Occasionally the satellite signal was lost, resulting in misplaced flags. In this case the spreadsheet description is the valid tree(s) location. On the last day of the survey, October 3, some of the trees had started losing their leaves, making it impossible to assess the state of their health. These entries are in red in the table. There were 117 trees in this category.

3 The summary at the end of the table shows that of the 681 ash trees found in this inventory, 497 (73%) were identified as being on public land. Ninety-five of these trees showed signs of decline in health, but no completely dead trees were seen, possibly due to prompt action to remove dead trees. Among the 117 trees that had lost their leaves by October 3 there may have been some sick or dead trees, thus accounting for the early onset of dormancy. On private land, of the 184 ash trees, 23 of them were judged to be in the waning or sick category plus an undetermined number of the 54 trees that had gone dormant by October 3. Of the 31 communities that have been surveyed to date, Paxton had the highest fraction of ash trees on public land. This emphasizes the importance of continuing tree inspection, long range planning and budgeting by Paxton officials. Paxton residents should be informed that they should also do this. At the time of the survey, the EAB had not yet been identified in Paxton, so the reason for the decline of some of the ash trees is not known. The website, < champaign/homeowners/ html>, has information on ash tree diseases. In regions where the EAB has been identified, it has been observed that EAB damage appears first in trees that are already in decline due to drought, disease, native borers or injury. A few tree trunks were examined closely and were found to have small round borer holes characteristic of a native borer, but no D- shaped holes characteristic of the EAB were observed. Native ash borers are commonly found in this region. To distinguish native ash borers from the EAB, <ashalert.osu.edu/userfiles/ native_borers.pdf> can be consulted. Regular inspection of the ash trees in Paxton to look for damage due to EAB as well as native borers can help both officials and homeowners deal with EAB more effectively. Decisions could be made about which trees to treat with insecticide in an effort to save them. The website, < files/multistate_eab_insecticide_fact_sheet.pdf> provides more information on insecticide types and treatment schedules. The website < Central_IL.pdf> may be helpful if it is decided to replace an ash tree with a different species. Submitted by Carl Altstetter, October 16, revised December 8, 2014 Approved by the ECIMN Publication Review Committee November 17, 2014 Carol Steinman, president of ECIMN Advisory Board
