2 President Torben s Words of Wisdom Saturday July 1 District Changeover It was decided last meeting we hire a bus for the District Changeover, it s a 25 seater, first in best dressed the cost of bus ride is $15. Three club (The Entrance/Toukley/Wyong) Cabaret June 25, at Halekulani Bowling Club 2pm to 5pm. All proceeds will go to purchase equipment to SES. Volunteers are need for the Science and Engineering challenge, the venue is St Andrews School East Gosford. Carl von Clausewitz Guest Spraker Peita Berzins ShelterBox and Shelter Kits Shelte Box is an international disaster relief charity, specialising in the delivery of emergency boxes of aid. They seek to provide shelter, warmth and dignity to the families that have lost their homes to disasters, both natural and man-made. The aim is to respond rapidly by delivering the iconic green box. At the heart of each shelter box is a custom-designed disaster relief tent. Large enough for an extended family, the tent is made to withstand high winds, heavy rainfall and can be adapted to suit both extreme heat and cold Other equipment includes: thermal blankets; insulated ground mats; water purification equipment and water carriers; a stove (either wood burning or multi fuel); a kitchen set with cooking and eating utensils; a basic tool kit; solar lights and children s activity pack. The box contents can be tailored to suit conditions and climate; treated mosquito nets or thermal hats, gloves and scarves can be included Each box has a nominal cost of $1,000, which includes box contents, warehousing and transport to affected areas, anywhere in the world. Volunteer Shelter box Response Teams (SRTs) accompany the boxes to ensure they reach the most vulnerable families and overseas their distribution. 3 For those who can t read Wingdings 2 this means THE ROTARY FOUNDATION OUR CHARITY The Global Polio Eradication Initiative Bill and Melinda Gates, co-chairs of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, released their Annual Letter in February, highlighting gains that have been made in improving children s health around the world. The letter was addressed to Warren Buffett, who donated the bulk of his fortune to the foundation ten years ago. As Bill and Melinda say, the magic number is zero when thinking about many health challenges today, and polio is the closest to reaching this goal. Bill and Melinda write: We want to end our letter with the most magical number we know. It s zero. This is the number we re striving toward every day at the foundation. Zero malaria. Zero TB. Zero HIV. Zero malnutrition. Zero preventable deaths. Zero difference between the health of a poor kid and every other kid. Polio is closest to reaching this magic number. You and I have talked about polio a lot. When you were growing up, you saw things kids never see today: children with polio on crutches and leg braces, photos of kids in iron lungs. By the late 1970s, with the help of vaccines, the United States eliminated polio, but it still raged around the world. In 1988, when the global campaign was launched to end polio, there were 350,000 new cases each year. Last year, there were 37. It s thrilling to be nearing the day when no children will be crippled by polio. But we re often asked why we re making such a big effort on polio if our priority is to save lives. The answer is, ending polio will save lives through the magic of zero. When polio is eradicated, the world can dedicate polio funds to improving child health, and the lessons from polio will lead to better immunisation systems for other diseases. Warren, when you announced your gift to our foundation, you told us to make big bets. The whole world is making a big bet here. A lot of gains in global health don t get noticed. Polio is different. Everyone is watching. If things stay stable enough in the conflict areas, humanity could see its last case of polio sometime this year. Polio will soon be history. In our lifetimes, malaria will end. No one will die from AIDS. Few people will get TB. Children everywhere will be well nourished. And the death of a child in the developing world will be just as rare as the death of a child in the rich world. We can t put a date on these events, and we don t know the sequence, but we re confident of one thing: The future will surprise the pessimists. Thank you for putting your trust in us, Warren.
