1 Steering Committee Meeting MEETING SUMMARY Monday, November 26, 2018, 6:30 PM Town Hall Room N. Community Conversations #1 Public Input Overview and Themes David Henning delivered a presentation to the committee summarizing the key themes from public input received as a part of Community Conversations #1 and showcasing detailed responses from individual events. A Community Conversations #1 summary report will be available online soon on Leigh Anne King also presented the proposed plan chapter structure. (See attached presentation for details.) 2. Vision and Values Discussion and Exercise Leigh Anne King delivered a presentation to the committee on proposed vision and value statements to serve as a plan framework. The proposed statements view Mooresville as Enduring, Connected, Equitable, and Innovative. Leigh Anne King then led a small group exercise to evaluate the details of the vision and values statements. The Committee gathered in two groups with feedback recorded by Nat Heyward and David Henning. Notes on Vision and Values Statements From Small Group 1 * *A (+) is beside statements with majority agreement within the group. A (-) is beside statements that did not collect majority agreement. For Enduring o (+) Mill Village is important o (+) Reword bullet 3 o (+) Specific and/or unique instead of special in initial statement

2 o (+) Lake Norman and the natural green areas it supports, instead of natural ecosystems o (-) Remove Lake Norman because it is not in the Town limits For Connected o (+) Mooresville is a regional job center too o (+) No issue with safety currently, just with vehicle travel o (+) Safe and efficient travel options instead of safe and effective options o (-) Charlotte isn t the only regional connection For Equitable o (+) Education is critical to equity o (+) Municipal services instead of public o (+) Attractive built environment is an equity issue o (+) Bullet 4 should be reconsidered o (-) Don t we value all communities?; Do we need to call out established communities specifically? Innovative o (+) Collaborative planning solutions instead of innovative planning solutions o (+) Remove creative from initial statement as redundant with innovative o (+)Needs to add collaboration and partnership, possibly in bullet 1 Notes on Vision and Values Statements From Small Group 2 * *A (+) is beside statements with majority agreement within the group. A (-) is beside statements that did not collect majority agreement. Generally o (+)The four words sound clinical rather than inspiring. In general, the bullets are more inspiring than the words in the framework o o (+) Generally too much technical or clinical sounding language (+) There should be symmetry in the framework words and bullets; perhaps each bullet addresses a respective topic, or they go from more general to more specific, or wider to narrower geography; parallel construction and consistent flow o (+) There is room for an education bullet in each main framework section For Enduring o (+) Enhance not a clear term in context o (+) Attractive and inviting not a clear common reference o (+) Built environment not a clear term for those first hearing it o (+) Special places and assets sounds too clinical o (+) Better connections and a common look of connective spaces can make enduring spaces more vibrant o (-)Within a variety of neighborhood living options people are unable to find one bedroom apartments; it is a desire of younger people especially For Connected o (+) Unites instead of links in the first statement to make it more aspirational and less functional o (+) Residents, neighbors, employers, community leaders, and the region instead of residents, neighbors, job centers, and the region o (+) Destinations in and around Town instead of destinations in town o (+) Fourth bullet is a slam dunk o (-) Add economic development and existing industry to the list of residents,

3 neighbors, job centers, and the region For Equitable o (+) Opportunity, or inclusive would be better than equitable ; concern that equitable doesn t match the bullets; fair or fair and equitable is too relative as a replacement o (+) Will guide changes too heavy handed or big-brother-ish o (+) Possibly include provide opportunities to be the best they can be o (+) Household incomes sounds too clinical o (+) Equitable public service and accessibility goes beyond what the plan can fix here o (+) Not everyone benefits from growth and investment, perhaps replace with maximizing benefit, maximizing the number of people benefitting, or improving livelihoods o (-) include phrase mutual benefit in the community For Innovative o (+) Creative innovation is redundant o (+) Employ in the first statement doesn t fit the bullets o (+) Consider ordering bullets from Mooresville outward o (+) Remove needs from fits Mooresville s needs o (+) Remove vacant from repurposing vacant structures 3. South Mooresville Focus Area Workshop Preview Leigh Anne King delivered a presentation to the committee on the South Mooresville Focus Area Workshop, including draft maps to be used at the workshop. The workshop will be held December 6, 2018 from 6:30 to 8:30PM at the Cove Church Mooresville Campus, 197 Langtree Road. 4. Next Steps The OneMooresville Steering Committee will meet next on January 14 to discuss the results of the focus area workshop. There will be no Steering Committee Meeting in December, though members are encouraged to attend the December 6 focus area workshop. Please Mark Your Calendars! 45 Vision and Values Exercise 1. Read through each component of the value framework. Take notes on reactions if helpful. 2. Each group will go around the table and provide each person with one opportunity to make a statement about each component. Focus on the concepts being communicated. Wordsmithing is ok, but not the focus. 3. Recorder jots down each idea on the handout. Please write legibly and leave space for other comments. 4. Go around a second time to note additional ideas. 5. Facilitator will walk the group back through the comments and ask for a show of hands or head nod for agreement. Mark + for those with good agreement from most. Mark - with a minority in support.
