3 Overview of signage There 2 main types of signage location and wayfinding signs. Location Signs The location signs denote the exact location of that sign, for example externally on a building wall or at the head of directional signs; in an internal location to denote the building and the floor level. Blue RAL 5002 text Helvetica 55, onto a white background. Wayfinding Signs The wayfinding signs are used to guide people around the campus using external and internal directional signs, fingerpost signs, projecting signs, braille and tactile signs and digital prints. White text Helvetica 55, onto a blue RAL 5002 background. These signs usually carry arrows to point the way.

4 In a number of instances the 2 types combine to inform the viewer where they currently are located and giving directions to other locations nearby. When producing wayfinding signs in the braille and tactile format, the guidance is to room numbers, toilets, stairs and lifts only. The reasoning behind this is that the room number will rarely change but the contents of rooms may change frequently. If guidance to named rooms, departmental offices, lecture theatres, GTA rooms etc. is required then digital prints into FullView units should be used.

6 Internal Signage Specification DDA Wayfinding signs follow the Sign Design Guide Tactile text 20mm cap ht in Helvetica 55, 1mm thick onto 1.5mm Rowmark matt plastic. Braille is round top finish with suitable arrows to match, lead in D to be used in front of braille. The D can be white or clear. Clear Rowmark is to be back coloured white or blue. It is important that the correct stable materials are used otherwise the braille balls can pop under temperature changes. Individual braille and tactile slats are 400mm x 50mm total and are held into FullView units by magnetic strips. The end of the slats sit under the side profile of the FullView units for added security. These dimensions are critical for the slats to line up correctly. Top slats is blue RAL 5002 text onto white slat for location of sign, remaining slats are white text onto blue RAL 5002 FullView unit is 420mm overall width and depth is determined by number of slats on multiples of 50mm within the top and bottom track. FullView unit had silver anodised radius side track with light grey caps. Cap with pin hole is located on bottom of side-track and should not be visible. Mounted 1400mm from floor to underside of bottom side track

7 DDA Door Signs Braille and white tactile text and symbols onto blue RAL 5002 matt finish Rowmark plastic 1.5mm. Individual signs are 150 x 150mm, radius corners. 1 fixing hole per corner, fitted to doors either by screws or adhesive fitted 1400mm bottom of sign from ground level. Toilet Female toilet Toilet Male toilet Female Toilet Male Toilet Accessible & Gender neutral Projecting signs Double sided signs generally used outside toilets and lifts especially in corridors generally pictorials. Sign size 150mm high width to suite the number of pictorials.

8 Minimum mounting height 2300mm from underside of sign to ground level if possible DDA for residences Same rules apply for the standard DDA signs but due to the ease at which the slats can be removed from residences they have to be securely fixed into the FullView units. The individual slats are stuck with VHB tape onto the backing Dibond panel and allowance is to be made for a cover strip 15mm deep 406mm wide, these strips are fixed by VHB tape on site once the unit has been screwed to the wall to hide and cover the screws.

9 4mm drilled through top and bottom FullView track with a 7mm countersunk hole in the Dibond to allow countersunk screws to fix unit to wall. Additional 30mm per sign has to be allowed on top of the 50mm per slat. 10 Digital print for interchangeable wayfinding Digital prints into tamper resistant FullView units with silver anodised radius side track Colour rules apply for text, same as for DDA signage. Sign size to suit area and viewing distance. Print mounted into FullView units Front lens is 3mm anti-glare plexi plastic and back plate is 2mm white Dibond. Full-view units are fixed by screws through each corner so that both the side track and the bottom and top tracks are penetrated by the screws.

25 Traffic Signs For sign that come under the TSRGD rules the signs will now have to comply with BS EN 12899:2007 and will need to be CE marked. This labelling will carry a range of information about the sign, materials used and date of manufacturing. These signs will need to have been manufactured by a traffic signshop that has CE accreditation regardless of who supplies and fits. 15
