9 niu Essen a Our first site in Essen shows how very impressive our concept is. In Essen, niu weaves the fabric for its narratives, involving elements that address the theme of black coal and form the conceptual framework for the niu concept. These narratives inspire the design and structure of the hotel: complex impressions created by sediments, shining surfaces in the form of blackened gold, luminous elements made up of embers, authentic pit shirts worn by the hotel staff and gastronomic delights sampled as the sun goes down over the pit head. Selecting a name of the same ilk was therefore such an obvious choice and the reason why the niu in Essen is called "Cobbles", meaning "large lumps of coal" in mining language. Showcase Essen

11 Bar Q Showcase Essen The metamorphosis can be felt to the full in the bar. The open-plan bar features alternating lighting that entices you to stay. There is always something going on here. Raw materials like wire mesh, unhewn wood and textured stone create a cool ambience. Miner s lamps in the same design are suspended from the ceiling and provide extra light, and barstools are modelled on the dungarees that miners used to wear. Each ever-so tiny detail convinces with its imperfect charm in industrial design. And in between: lots of greenery in the form of real plants and plant decor.

12 Showcase Essen Food Area l In the bistro, niu Cobbles serves fresh and healthy food along with meals made up of several courses. At the centre of the vertical gardens, slate slabs and metal baskets in mining design are a real eye-catcher. An extraordinary chain curtain attracts the attention of the guest. It functions like a large wall mural featuring pulsating city scenes.

14 Friends l niu makes common cause with the charitable association Viva con Agua de Sankt Pauli e.v. The idea of this collaboration is simple: Different artists engaged with Viva con Agua Arts and Millerntor Gallery highlight the walls of niu hotels with urban artworks for charity. The proceeds from this socio-cultural project are donated to the water and sanitary-related projects of the water initiative. Contemporary art suits the hotel concept perfectly and turns every stay at niu hotels into a timeless and unique experience. The initial focus is on the project Viva con Agua in Uganda, where the sustainable implementation of water projects will improve the health conditions of children.
