2 Introduction This guide is intended to help claims adjusters and underwriters identify manufacturers of installed shingles. IBHS researchers have tested many asphalt shingle products, and have developed a list of characteristics that help distinguish one manufacturer from another. These characteristics may be visible on installed shingles because of their color patterns, s, or physical dimensions. Characteristics such as sealant patterns or nail line characteristics may also be useful for distinguishing the manufacturer of un-installed shingles (new or damaged and removed). The guide focuses on standard 3-tab and architectural shingles, and does not address other shapes. The patterns identified are generally more readily apparent for architectural shingles, which are more complex, than for 3-tab shingles, which are very simple. The core products for manufacturers, which comprise the majority of the marketplace, are included in this guide, while the designer colors, or premium versions of the core products are not included. The designer or premium versions may have similar physical dimensions and/or color patterns to the core products, or they could be very different. For example, the color information provided in this guide is useful for CertainTeed s core architectural product, Landmark, while Landmark TL, Landmark PRO, Landmark Solaris, and others are not addressed. Similarly, the tab widths provided are useful for Tamko s core architectural product, Heritage, while Heritage Woodgate has different width characteristics, and thus is not addressed. These situations exist for other manufacturers as well. The primary intent of this guide is to identify the manufacturer, not individual products. Because product lines may change over time, this guide will be updated as needed. 2 of 6
