RAPID CITY PUBLIC LIBRARY Main Floor Vision Plan Report AcV2 21 September 2016 architecture

Libraries Are Obsolete You may have heard, especially from techies, that libraries are obsolete, particularly in this day when Google knows all and music and movies have become more accessible. And, of course, it is true, but only if the library you are enterring has not changed in the past thirty years. For the rest, the 21 st century library is still very much alive and evolving. The Rapid City Public Library is changing and thriving. Our goal is to be a traditional library. We have books and magazines, DVDs and story times and more. In short, everything people remember libraries having when they were growing up. BUT another goal is to be a destination in Rapid City. What better way to do that than to surprise our users? The Rapid City Public Library will surprise you with what we are made of in Available 24/7 through our website 24/7, you ll find downloadable e-books and audio books, streaming music and videos, free access to Consumer Reports online, and downloadable magazines. That s just online. As for our home downtown, the library will be changing the layout of our main floor collection. We want to make the library easier to use, so we will soon be looking more like a bookstore, with our collection arranged by subject. We will also be expanding our meeting room space (they are a hot commodity these days), making our spaces more comfortable, and adding even more surprises as time goes on. The possibilities are endless! Always our aim is to create a welcoming, stimulating environment where people will feel a part of the community that is Rapid City. - Jim McShane Always our aim is to create a welcoming, stimulating environment where people will feel a part of the community that is Rapid City. Whether the program or activity is summer reading, our monthly bluegrass jam, adult coloring (you might be surprised how popular that is), craft and gaming nights, viewing an art show in our corridor gallery, or one of many other exciting options, everyone is welcome. We hope we surprise you. We may even delight you. We will be here for you. Jim McShane Director, Rapid City Public Library Message from the Director 3

Rapid City Public Library s mission statement is to anticipate needs, build relationships and communities, and connect community to a global world. The Rapid City Public Library s mission statement is to anticipate needs, build relationships and communities, and connect community to a global world. In late-2015, the Rapid City Public Library (RCPL) engaged AcV2 Architecture to formulate a Plan for the future of the downtown branch s main floor. This plan is focused on offering spaces that enable the library s staff to innovatively meet its enduring mission, while also flexibly accommodating future changes. The Plan was developed in unison with the library s re-branding and strategic planning efforts. The Main Floor Plan is to be used by the RCPL as a roadmap for future improvements to primary areas on the first floor. The goal is for the design concepts to be easily implemented. The vision for the RCPL includes offering exciting new programs while also incorporating concepts from commercial spaces. Borrowing from bookstores, the stacks will be organized by categories becoming more user-friendly for the casual patron; and the library plans to offer coffee and refreshments for sale. We re even planning for a performance space with a stage and lighting. In other words, the library director and staff are embracing new ways to enrich lives and create and support an inclusive community. Whether offering innovative new programs or simply lowering the height of the bookshelves, this Plan has an eye toward flexibility and improved customer service the primary goals of the RCPL team. We re looking for something you d never expect to find in a library - Jim McShane Flexibility is a term that covers every aspect of design-thinking and library planning, from making sure spaces are truly multi-use, to ensuring new furniture is versatile and portable, and to allowing the library to respond quickly to the changing needs of the community. Better customer service is achieved through improved lines-of-sight within the library, especially from the new centralized staff locations. Introduction 7

I haven t been in the library in a while; I didn t know you had that! RCPL by librarian Sally Adrian Taylor Rapid City Public Library Key Staff Jim McShane, Director Sean Minkel, Assistant Director Kim Beck, Administrative & Facilities Coordinator Laurinda Tapper, Outreach & Programming Coordinator Danielle Wood, Public Services & Collections Librarian AcV2 architecture Design Team Patri Acevedo, Principal Architect Jeremy Altman, Project Manager Alecia Skea, Interior Designer Planning Meetings + Workshops Meeting Date Initial Client meeting December 10, 2015 RCPL Board of Directors meeting January 25, 2016 Kick-off meeting February 2, 2016 Design Charette February 19, 2016 Post-Charette review March 24, 2016 Design review meeting April 15, 2016 Design review meeting May 5, 2016 Design review meeting May 13, 2016 Final design review meeting June 2, 2016 Plan Aims Aim 1 Aim 2 Generate a plan for how to improve the library main floor in a cohesive way Develop guiding Design Principles that create a consistent look and feel Planning Process 1. During the project kick-off meeting, the design team and RCPL key staff defined wants and needs to understand general goals and use as a basis for the design. 2. The design team generated three floor plan options that reflect the RCPL s values and enhance the services offered by the library. 3. The design team hosted an interactive design charette with the RCPL Key Staff which achieved the following: Generated space and program requirements Captured concerns and aspirations for the library space Interactively generated and analyzed several spatial layouts Gained clear understanding of client team s preferred design direction Prioritized the Plan design objectives Reviewed the floor plan options presented by AcV2 Reviewed interior design concepts 4. The design team integrated the key staff s feedback and generated a single floor plan layout. 5. The design team engaged consultants specializing in mechanical systems and lighting to identify how to best upgrade or replace the existing systems as needed. 6. The design team finalized the Guiding Design Principles to define the overall quality of the spaces to include finishes, fixtures, and furnishings. 8 Goals + Process 9

To guide the development of the Plan, the RCPL Key Staff worked with AcV2 architecture to articulate the overall objectives. The objectives were categorized into operational, functional and design objectives. The objectives were then prioritized to reflect the items the Key Staff identified as most valuable. 13 A project list is critical to successfully realizing the vision set forth in the Plan. Funding was the most influential consideration in separating the projects. With a goal of being a good steward of the city s resources, designing a series of smart improvements offers superior return on investment. While funding will ultimately determine the pace at which improvements are made, the individual projects have been planned to minimize the impact on the Library s services. The first four projects would ideally be accomplished in sequential order. They have been identified as higher priorities and immediate needs. Projects can be implemented as funds become available. 21 Design Concepts

Throughout the planning process, the Library s Key Staff clearly established a goal of creating flexible and versatile spaces. Currently, the Library s layout and furniture are largely static. Flexibility will allow for programmatic growth without the need for a larger facility. Acknowledging the shortfalls of single-use spaces and cumbersome furniture, the Plan ensures spaces are truly multi-use, and new furniture is versatile and portable. As the Library expands its program offerings, the facility needs to offer flexibility and be intuitively rearrangeable. Easily reconfigurable spaces, furniture, and surfaces will enable the RCPL to maximize the potential held by the existing building. Smartly deployed partitions and furniture will provide the staff and patrons opportunities to customize each space for comfort and functionality. 42 Flexibility 43

Bookstores have succeeded at prioritizing customer wants by making access to content user-friendly. Borrowing from how bookstores are organized, the library book stack layout will be given intuitive categories. Instead of towering shelves, the new layout will utilize lower internal shelving, which is comfortable for the patron, and also enhances security. Display areas and sporadically placed lounge chairs will offer an improved browsing experience. Further embracing a bookstore-inspired organizational model, the Library staff will be dividing the collection into 15 neighborhoods that are further divided into 38 categories. For example, Art, Music, and Performing Arts are 3 new categories, but are all part of a single neighborhood. We want the people who are going to the coffee shop to do their business here. - Kim Beck 44 Bookstore Model 45

In addition to dedicating spaces to new programs, the Library also aims to create an atmosphere that is flexible, innovative, exciting, and perhaps a little bit unexpected. The new spaces include: MakerSpace, where the Maker* community can gather to create, invent, learn, seek inspiration, and connect with fellow Makers. *Makers define themselves as members of a subculture at the intersection of DIYers, tinkerers, and hackers who engage in electronics, robotics, 3D printing, and fabrication. Gaming Room, where users can engage in online gaming, host LAN parties, play tabletop board games, and enjoy console gaming. Performance/Event Space, where musical performances, theatrical performances, talks, speeches, keynotes, training sessions, receptions, and Pecha Kucha and TEDx-style events can be hosted. Audio and Storage Room, supporting the Performance/Event Space with area to store tables, chairs, the removable stage, as well as the necessary audio equipment. Conference Rooms, offering a small and a large conference room allowing the RCPL to serve different needs for any size teams and collaborations. Solarium Conference room, akin to a traditional boardroom with typical support amenities. Café, offering refreshments similar to coffee shops, seating and areas to meet up with friends, with access to the outside patio. Small Business Center, where one-on-one consultation for small business and support, as well as a space for homeschooling to be hosted. Enclosed Study Rooms, where groups can meet in a space that is enclosed for acoustical privacy. Storage, in convenient locations for staff access. 46 New Spaces 47

The Guiding Principles are meant to define the uniqueness of the Rapid City Public Library. They are to be used as a guide for decision-making to assist in creating a consistent experience for staff and patrons as the plan is implemented over time. Welcoming & Friendly Intuitive & Functional Unexpected & Inspiring Innovative & Artsy The words used for the Guiding Principles are derived from the design process with the Key Staff as we worked together to define the experience. Guiding Principles

The Rapid City Public Library s mission statement is to anticipate needs, build relationships and communities, and connect community to a global world. From its founding in the late 1800s until now, the RCPL has served as a center for the community. Considering the Library s mission and anticipating future challenges and opportunities, the staff seeks to provide spaces that are fresh, safe, and inclusive, where the Library can offer innovative new programming. The new spaces will borrow ideas about comfort and hospitality from bookstores and coffee shops, while staying true to the RCPL s mission and the region s rich heritage. CREATIVE DIRECTION Welcoming Friendly Warm Sociable Hospitable Inviting Engaging Familiar Open Cozy Welcome Public Local / Regional Natural 50 Welcoming + Friendly 51

Additionally, creating better lines-of-sight and better wayfinding throughout the Library will enable the staff to be more responsive to the patrons needs. CREATIVE DIRECTION Intuitive Functional Simple Easy to use Consistent Convenient Efficient Flexible Rearrangeable Comfortable 52 Intuitive + Functional 53

Bad libraries build collections, good libraries build services, great libraries build communities. - R. David Lankes Moving away from the idea that a library is simply a collection of books, magazines, and movies has been underway at the RCPL for a while. The RCPL seeks to reflect the fact that this is no longer only a traditional library but offers much more. The refreshed design will compliment what the new RCPL has become. The architecture and interiors will advertise that the library also offers the creative, the unexpected, and the inspiring. Just as the right book can transport the mind, spaces can lead to unexpected collisions and inspiring collaborations. The Library s versatile new spaces, furniture, colors, and surfaces must reflect the energy, enthusiasm, and curiosity that have propelled our makers and thinkers for years to come. CREATIVE DIRECTION Unexpected Inspiring Simple Functional Wow factor Colorful Contemplative Fun 54 Unexpected + Inspiring 55

Continuing the trend of library-hosted MakerSpaces, the RCPL seeks to offer spaces that are welcoming and exciting for innovators and artists of all ages and abilities. The Library wants to enhance its relevance by imaginatively incorporating new technologies, while also cultivating partnerships with arts organizations and educators. CREATIVE DIRECTION Innovative Artsy Surprising finishes Geometric shapes Activity hub Creative flow 56 Innovative + Artsy 57

We have identified unique spaces within the Library that have specific requirements in order to achieve the best experience: Lobby Circulation / information desk Collaboration spaces Social spaces Private spaces Gaming space Book stacks Stage area. Along with these spaces, we have defined design elements that will create the desired goal for each space. This matrix is to be used as a performance specification, not as a prescriptive document. The matrix defines the ideal experience per space based on each of the design elements. Spatial Needs + Experience Design

Although the following elements define each space, they also form a singularly cohesive design palette. While creating unique spaces and sometimes surprising experiences, the client team and design team should ensure that future decisions adhere to the guidelines set forth in the following sections: Color Materials Texture Lighting & Ceiling Furniture Wayfinding Design Elements

* Color palette based on Sherwin Williams colors as Basis of Design SW 7587 Antique Red SW 7066 Gray Matters SW 6764 Swimming SW 6905 Goldfinch SW 7129 Opera Glass SW 6230 Rainstorm The paint color palette is a smart combination of warm and cool colors accented by lively bolds and anchored by one inky deep tone. The palette, relying heavily on cooler tones, allows the interior design to bring warmth through the use of natural materials and textures. The neutral tones in the palette will provide a crisp and modern field for smooth, natural, and geometric elements alike. The strong presence of blues creates a calming and fresh environment, which is conducive to thoughtful and productive work, and will have a calming effect on the patrons. Both the yellow and red accent tones are to be used in areas that will house more creative and collaborative work. Yellow is optimistic, confident, social and fun, while red is a strong attention grabber. Use these accent colors selectively in areas that you will want to draw attention to. 82 accent field field accent field accent Color 83

In order to balance the coolness of the color palette, we are using materials that have strong textures and tones. Natural materials aid in creating an overall design concept reflecting the Black Hills region, and giving visual heft to existing columns and accent walls. Proposed materials include, but are not limited to stone, slate and wood. Locally sourced materials should be used where possible. 84 Materials 85

A complementary mix of smooth, natural, and geometric textures will comprise a variety of work surfaces and architectural finishes without overwhelming or competing with the updated color and material palettes. Smooth textures, such as glass, veneers, and laminates will be used to divide spaces and provide task-appropriate work surfaces. Natural textures, such as stone and wood, will provide warmth and ambience. Geometric textures, such as laser cut or dimensional panels, can be used to provide enough contrast to focus attention on key transition or interaction areas. 86 Texture 87

Lighting should be plentiful, whether it is ambient, accent, or task lighting, and daylight should be provided whenever possible. Ambient lighting should be carefully thought out to light the entire space and minimized glare, with accent lighting creating emphasis and drawing focus to specific areas. Task lighting should be easily accessible to patrons in study and meeting areas. Ceiling design should be intentional, emphasizing the space s function with materials and acoustic products where necessary, and incorporating and integrating lighting and ceiling materials for a cohesive overall look. Design can be muted or aggressive, depending on the function of the space. 88 Ceiling & Lighting 89

A variety of furniture will be used throughout the spaces. Types of furniture will further define the space by arrangement, color, materials, height, scale, and surrounding elements. Tables and seating should be high quality, commercial grade. Horizontal surfaces, such as tables, counters and tops of shelving units, should be wood, high-pressure laminates, solid surfaces or decorative metal, for higher durability and ease of cleaning. Avoid veneers. In work areas, provide ergonomic chairs, fully upholstered with commercial grade fabric or leather, adjustable with armrests, swivel/tilt bases and casters. Chairs must include a stopgap mechanism on arms. In all cases, armrests must clear bottom of table apron. For public area task seating, select armless chairs as much as possible. Use lounge chair with arms in select areas and favor chair arms made out of wood or plastic, since arms are the first areas to show wear. Integrate power access into furniture in appropriate areas. Specify casters on furniture pieces that need to be moved often including chairs and tables. This will add to the flexibility, maintain the durability of the furniture piece, and protect the flooring from unnecessary wear. In public areas, use fabrics with special coatings or finishes to enhance stain resistance and provide moisture-protection. Upholstered furniture should use fabrics rated for 100,000 double-rubs or more. 90 Furniture 91

A clever and consistent use of finishes and signage will guide patrons through the spaces. Signage will be suspended from the ceiling or furniture-mounted, depending on the intention and required flexibility of the area. Finishes will be arranged to visually guide the user by creating contrast between uses/functions, eliminating the need for directional carpeting. 92 Wayfinding 93
