2 Sybarite is a 40-strong practice of architects and designers that hail from all over the globe and which was co-founded in 2002 by Torquil McIntosh and Simon Mitchell. 2 Sybarite creates immersive, multi-sensory and seductive environments for its clients and to date Sybarite has created more than 1,500 projects for global brands in the worlds of retail, lifestyle and hospitality. The Sybarite team is united by an appreciation for the finer things in life, each member adding their own flavour as to how Sybarite thinks, acts and works but all sharing the desire to create spaces that are tactile, intimate and encourage interaction. Today the practice operates from a spacious custom-designed rooftop studio in West London with future projects on the drawing board including several hotels, large-scale high-end shopping malls and multiple new stores for a global luxury retail brand.

4 JOSEPH The luxury fashion label s new stores play on Joseph s signature design details and the brand s split personality; black and white Anglo-Franco, masculine and feminine. The designs intentionally focus on these opposites while also drawing upon cultural references to the individual store locations. In Miami, Art Deco and grand architectural gestures inform the 260 square-metre space and its giant corkscrew staircase. In London, a traditional townhouse is painted black with a giant rubber ball door handle. JOSEPH 4

7 SKP BEIJING The re-design and refurbishment of SKP created a new brand for one of Asia s largest luxury department stores. All aspects of the 140,000 square-metre store reflect the brand s identity, known as the SKP curve. This is drawn from the architectural concept of morphing the columns into the ceiling to produce one continuous sculpture, inspired by Art Deco craftsmanship and opulence. We spent four years refurbishing every department on every floor, and kept it trading at the same time. There was a seven-hour window, each night, in which we could work and we had we had to chop up every floor into different phases, which is why it took so long. There was one night when we had about 2,500 on site. SKP BEIJING 7

12 SKP XI AN After two years of intensive work we are proud that SKP Xi an opened its doors in June 2018, extending the SKP experience to China s fast-developing heartland. Xi an was the original capital of China and is one of the few remaining cities with the original fortifications. It s also the home of the Terracotta Army. Sybarite worked with local government with respect the site s proximately to the historic city wall and in recognition of Sybarite s work on the project our Co- Founder, Torquil McIntosh, was presented with the key to the city at the official opening ceremony. It s nearly double the size of SKP Beijing at 250,000 square metres and 20 storeys high and is home to approximately 1,000 brands so it s a monumental retail effort. We have created destinations, including multiple international restaurants and cinemas, to drive customers up the storeys. SKP XI AN 12

18 SKP CINEMA SKP Cinema is a luxurious, futuristic and standalone cinema brand for SKP - with its own strong and scalable design language. Sybarite wanted to develop something unexpected and memorable with the SKP Cinema brand: a refined, seductive and immersive cultural space spanning two floors, which are linked with an iconic, brutalist, poured-concrete staircase. The space illustrates how Sybarite has created a design language that can be integrated between the floors, walls and ceilings to develop a sculpted, luxurious environment and a recognisable brand. 20 MARNI Each store is unique to its location the identity comes through in the design s cultural coding. The London store s red palette references the St George flag, buses and phone boxes, while the diplodocus skeleton in the Natural History museum informed the sculptural stainless-steel display. In Tokyo, there are echoes of the Japanese flag. In New York, the skyscrapers above and the streets light and shade below were signifiers for the double-height space and its collection of high-hanging mannequins. MARNI 20

23 BEIJING KITCHEN The 1500 sq m, 238 cover restaurant s design and layout are inspired by Xi an s streetscape and urban structure, as well as by the grids, symmetry, hierarchy and greenery of the Forbidden City in Beijing. Also taking design cues from the original Beijing Kitchen at SKP Beijing, this new restaurant is a luxurious, warm and informal environment in which to enjoy the cooking of renowned chef Ku Chi Fai. Rather than competing with each other for the diners attention, the food and the timeless design are in harmony in a restaurant with glazed openings to display the theatre kitchen. 25 YEN A traditional Japanese soba restaurant in London with a western twist. The highceiling spaces were designed using a coherence of Japanese materiality, design cues and construction techniques. The use of Japanese maple wood, in various thicknesses and tones, create a play of light and shadow for depth and intimacy contrasting with the theatre of the open kitchen. YEN 25

29 ALBERTA FERRETTI The desire by the brand to have a luxury image but with great density of display meant that, after studying the collections in detail, the concept had to be fully flexible. The bespoke means of hanging the clothes was designed by fitting the full perimeter walls with steel to support interchangeable magnetic busts, hooks and shelves. A series of glass panels with steel strips was also added for even more magnetism. ALBERTA FERRETTI 29

32 RENDEZ-VOUS The creation of a new lifestyle concept store for SKP is part of the overall brand development of the Beijing and Xi an department stores. It is designed to curate a myriad of operators from a wine bar to an artisanal cheese room. A book store connects the space s creative and cultural elements. A simple palette of materials creates a timeless mood enhanced by a variety of lighting to delineate different areas. RENDEZ VOUS 32

35 DONDUP A new 600 square-metre showroom in Rome for the Italian fashion house, the first part of an extensive redesign of the denim label s retail network. Bespoke display units were designed to be flexible for different set-ups. The stripped-back concrete and weathered materials used, along with every item of furniture and fitting, were designed to act as a complementary backdrop to the varied denim and readyto-wear collections on display. 37 3INA The make-up company (pronounced Mina), wanted a response to the growing trend for quality make-up for millennials but at a good price point. Other, more expensive, competitors use black packaging, consequently Sybarite s concept was to create a display using packaging with the colour of the products. This simple gesture made for real standout. 3INA 37

39 STEFANEL The client required a new image for its 700 shops in an architectural language that would be synonymous with the brand identity. The design concept necessitated adaptability to a variety of sites, from small to 1,000 square-metre, double-height stores. A modular system achieved complete flexibility without sacrificing aesthetics. The system can be customised to suit shop locations of any size and for any budget and can be easily and costeffectively installed on site in a matter of days. STEFANEL 39

42 QUEEN S AWARD These awards, bestowed by the Queen, are widely regarded as the UK s most prestigious business honour. In 2016 Sybarite received the award in recognition of its ambitious and innovative work in transforming SKP Beijing, into China s premier luxury department store. I am so pleased to see Sybarite has been recognised for their fantastic achievements in exporting. They have completed a large amount of innovative work worldwide and are making their mark on one of the largest shopping malls in China. Due to their success, the business has grown substantially and it is great to be able to support them as they continue to grow.
