1 0 MOVEMENT MOVEMENT 0. Traffic management Speed restraint by design Street design must ensure that the permitted speed limit for each type of street is not exceeded. It is essential to provide traffic calming measures into the development, which are self-enforcing. This must be achieved by careful use of design elements that are acceptable by highway design standards and will help realise safe streets for all users. Horizontal alignment - a change in alignment of the carriageway helps reducing the speed Vertical tables - should be provided at key junctions to reduce traffic speed and allow free pedestrian and bicycle crossings Carriageway narrowing Use of landscape elements - trees, on street parking and other landscape elements should be used carefully to achieve speed control Design of surface materials - thoughtful design of surface treatment i.e. bands / strips in different materials helps with traffic calming and creates a pedestrian friendly environment Horizontal alignment - a change in alignment of the carriageway helps reducing the speed

On street parking and wide footpaths. Potential for public art Local centre: Community building anchoring the corner of the civic green to be a landmark. Shared surface with spill out spaces for cafes, local farmers market along the civic green School square: School building addressing square / community park to be a landmark / marker structure terminating view along the dedicated busway from the north which must incorporate a school drop off point : : Common: High quality paving materials, predominantly unifying surface treatment, consisting of block paving, bound gravel and asphalt. Lighting columns, seating and litter bins. High quality tree grilles School square: Change in materials of the shared and traffic calmed space to define the school boundary Native street trees evenly spaced - species contrasting with primary street trees to define square. Parking to help animate the square - use of paving / banding consistent through the square and the absence of defined road edge defines a pedestrian owned space Trees emphasise the entrance to the square and help define a change of use and the edge of traffic free areas Traffic management - a raised table defines the square and extends to cover two minor road junctions (see diagram opposite). The change in level is proposed to calm traffic entering the square Road access to the residential parcel north west of the B00 Use of simple material to help define the square Clipped hedgerows and / or ornamental trees provide enclosure and a greater sense of intimacy for the core space Core space within the square providing seating for quieter contemplation and enjoyment of a visually rich urban square constructed using high quality natural materials Access to Northstowe from B00 road junction providing primary access to the local centre Lighting strategy in this square should be integrated with the lighting design and lighting columns used on B00 and is subject to agreement with SCDC Figure. - Illustrative sketch design
