Why settle for lackluster gardens filled with dull, ho-hum plants? Plants after all are the very essence of fashionable gardening. In this lecture, Kelly Norris calls for a garden revolution: out with boring plants and in with stylish alternatives that captivate and enthrall. In chapters on environment, structure, seasonal standouts, and plant combinations he shines a spotlight on the A-list plants in every category plants that will thrive, not merely survive. Along the way, he shows you how to forge a personal style in harmony with your garden s setting and local environment. As Kelly puts it, A garden is the best way to savor life on earth. Let Plants with Style guide you to the plants that will provide a richer, more fulfilling connection between you and your own patch of soil. Great Plants for the Great Plains BOB HENRICKSON, ADDIE KINGHORN, TODD FALLER The panel will talk about trees, shrubs, grasses and perennials that have been chosen by the Great Plants for the Great Plains Committee as plants that are hardy here but may not be used as much, especially in the landscapes. The panel will encourage attendees to expand their plant palette with plant suggestions that will work and are completely hardy at least for the eastern 2/3 of the state. Examples will be provided that would work in western Nebraska that are similar to the ones recommended for eastern Nebraska. Conference Dedication Orville Hatcher served his country during WWII in the US Navy for 2.5 years. He received his Forestry degree from Iowa State University. He became Omaha s Assistant City Forester and in 1962 he became Omaha s City Forester. He was a key player in the fight against Dutch Elm disease in Nebraska and surrounding states. In the early 70s, he conducted the first training for Omaha Licensed Arborists working with the Arborists of Omaha Association, the forerunner of the NAA. He was one of the 29 NAA Charter Members who worked to establish the NAA and was elected president in In 1990 he retired from that position at age 65 after 28 years of service. Orville passed away in June The 2017 Nebraska GREAT PLAINS Conference is dedicated in memory of Orville. Aerial Felling & Chainsaw Use - PHILLIP KELLEY Learn about work positioning for comfort and control as well as cut selection to get desired results.
4 SPEAKERS & SESSIONS Emerging Paver Trends - CHRIS BOYD & GENE KARJALA This presentation will focus on several new hardscape trends in both materials and installation methods for residential landscape projects. Belgard s portfolio of products includes Rinn technology, Satura technology, and Mirage porcelain pavers that all represent progressive manufacturing techniques. It s important to both understand the associated benefits and installation standards to sell and install these products successfully. Urban Forest Master Plan - JOSH BEHOUNEK This presentation will help attendees recognize a variety of valid approaches to urban forest master planning. Josh will use several case studies to demonstrate differences in plan goals and outcomes. Planning methods and tools cities use to benchmark a municipal forestry program will be discussed. Attendees will be able to relate their program to these examples and evaluate the usefulness of urban forest master planning for their community. New Perennials for Modern Gardeners - KELLY NORRIS With all the interest in the New Perennial Movement and a market shift towards sustainable gardening, a new palette of plants has emerged at the intersection of form and function. Perennials used in this style of gardening thrive in social arrangements, translating their native ecologies into beautiful communities of plants that ultimately require less resources and incorporate more diversity into the modern landscape. While many old favorites continue to have a place in these contemporary designs, many underappreciated perennials, particularly natives, have a new context in which to be appreciated. Norris will highlight several examples of sustainable, plant-driven gardens from across the country, comparing and contrasting them to the wild circumstances that inspired them, while introducing the audience to the perennials within them. Apps for Arborists - BRANDON GALLAGHER WATSON Tablet computers and smartphones are changing the way people access information, the way they interact with each other, and the way they do business. However, with nearly a million apps available these days, how do you sift through the morass to find the ones best suited for the way our industry does business? In this presentation you will learn what apps tree care professionals are utilizing in their everyday business and how you can put them to work for you. We ll go through at least a dozen different apps that can change the way you do tree care. Bring your device and play along! Where s Your Flair? - CHRIS BOYD & GENE KARJALA This presentation focuses on the opportunity to enhance your residential landscape wall applications with accenting techniques. Alternative usage of both paver products and wall caps as accenting can take an ordinary wall project to the next level. Learn about appropriate materials and installation techniques to incorporate this practice into your projects. How to Grow Your Plant Health Care Business TOM CARMAN If you are only addressing your customers pruning and removal needs you are missing a golden opportunity to increase both your revenues and profitability by providing PHC services as well. If you re just getting your feet wet with offering PHC services this presentation will help you gain some effective strategies to pursue to get started. If you re already offering PHC services, this will provide ways to grow your PHC business. Hydrangeas JANE BEGGS-JOLES Why doesn t my hydrangea bloom? How do I change the flower color? Why didn t my reblooming hydrangea flower? Hydrangeas generate more questions than any other genus. Learn the facts on this popular (and confusing) group of plants, and find out which species are best for the Great Plains. Resiliency: How it Affects Trees & Arborists PHILLIP KELLEY We will examine how well all aspects of a typical tree job cause stress and strain in small repetitive ways as well as large dramatic ways. We will also discuss whether or not we or our systems are capable of recovering. You Are Who You Are Because - SANDRA STOCKALL Understanding how people think and what motivates them is crucial in being an effective leader. This presentation will help you recognize your strengths and the strengths of others. How we interact with people influences our relationships with them. The ability to communicate effectively with others is affected by our ability to understand how they process information and make decisions. In this presentation, Stockall uses experiencebased research to create an exciting approach that is extremely accurate, understandable and easy to apply in everyday life. EAB: The Battle Now & Into the Future - DAN HERMS Emerald ash borer is the most devastating forest and shade tree insect ever to invade North America. Attendees will learn about the trajectory of the invasion, the impact of EAB, and short and long-term strategies for managing the pest and conserving ash. *This session will be presented on both days. New Plants for Landscape Challenges - JANE BEGGS-JOLES The Great Plains can be a challenging climate for landscapes, but plant breeders have developed exciting new varieties that don t just survive harsh climates, but thrive in them. Learn about new plants that will bring durable color to this harsh environment. Neuromarketing for the Green Industry BRANDON GALLAGHER WATSON Understanding how the brain responds to different messages can give you a new way to craft your communications. Neuromarketing is changing the way advertisers reach consumers but it is not just something that big companies are doing. This presentation will cover the history and science of neuromarketing and you will learn simple tips to make your messaging more effective regardless of your marketing budget. How to Use Social Media Effectively in Your Business MIKE BITTER Mike Bitter started Affordable Social Media nine years ago with the intent of learning, teaching, and applying best practices when using Social Media tools (Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and YouTube). Working with a wide array of industries, he s learned
5 SPEAKERS & SESSIONS how to expertly market products and services through social media and marketing. The integration of his Social Media Business Model has been instrumental in adjusting the way his clients transfer prospects into their sales funnel, ultimately increasing their sales volume. Climate Change & the Impact on Nebraska s Vegetation MARTHA SHULSKI, PH.D. Climate change is a developing threat to ecosystems worldwide, and Nebraska is no exception. Historical trends show that the greatest changes in climate have taken place with warming during the winter, warming for the minimum temperatures, and a trend toward wetter springs. Climate projections for the area indicate a future warming for all seasons and precipitation changes that are seasonally dependent. Primary impacts to vegetation would be expected with issues related to increased water stress, increased heat extremes, and shifts in species and pests. This session takes a look at past, present, and future climate as it relates to Nebraska s vegetation regimes. What Happens When You Take a Tree out of the Forest DR. JOHN BALL While it may seem obvious, trees come from the forest. But what happens when we move trees from their natural environment to the urban landscape? This session will chronicle the lives of two trees, the forest tree and its urban cousin and highlight the stresses each must face. Using Native Plants in the Landscape JUDY NAUSEEF, FAPLD With the availability of native plants from growers, wholesalers and garden centers, it is time for landscape designers and landscape contractors to start adding native plants to their projects. Offer beautiful and sustainable designs to your clients. These plants will help to conserve water, reduce the amount of water entering our waterways and create habitat for bees, birds and butterflies. Use basic design principles to incorporate native plants in your projects. Gear Junkies: How to Choose the Right Gear PHILLIP KELLEY What are the driving factors behind our purchasing decisions and are we making the best choices? Safe Removal of EAB-Stricken Trees - ZACK MATULEVICH Removing any dead or dying tree can be extremely hazardous. With the rapid decline of trees stricken with EAB, this hazard is multiplied with some trees even failing at ground level while being worked on. This session discusses the hazards associated with removing EAB-stricken trees and also steps to take to ensure this task can be completed safely. Understanding Merchant Processing: Making Sense of Nonsense - LORRIE WACKER This session will help take some of the frustration out of figuring out your merchant statements, understanding your fees and reducing your fees. Here are some of the areas that we will cover in our session: What makes up the true cost of accepting credit cards; What are the various pricing models and why do they matter; Reading your Merchant Statement; and Questions to ask your Merchant Services provider. Gardens of the World - PAUL READ Based upon his travel, international teaching and research experiences, Read will present illustrations of the beauty that he has encountered from China to Europe, Siberia to Australia, and selected locations within the United States. Depending upon the location, one person s weed is often another s favorite subject for floral arrangements, landscape applications, or even culinary use. Read s presentation will focus on floral diversity, environmental adaptations and plant-people interactions with insights and ideas about how plants from various parts of the world influence our daily lives. The Key to Tree Worker Safety - DR. JOHN BALL Tree work is among the highest risk professions in the United States. However, we can manage risk. This session will cover the key factors in avoiding becoming a statistic. Biochar: Sound Science or Another Green Fad? HEATHER NOBERT What is biochar and how does it work? This is a question many have upon hearing about biochar for the first time. In this presentation Heather will cover the science of biochar; what it is and how it works, including opportunities and challenges of using biochar in the field. Case studies of biochars use in Nebraska will be highlighted as well as a discussion of the future of biochar markets. EAB Aftermath: Let s Get it Right This Time! DR. JEFF ILES The EAB wave continues its slow and unpredictable movement westward. Sooner or later, we will come face to face with the stark reality that our landscapes will be forever changed by this destructive pest. And yet, we are being handed a rather unique opportunity to cope with a significant tree pest and in the aftermath, replant with thoughtfulness and purpose this time. Instead of replanting with even more honeylocust, or callery pear, we can pay close attention to strengthening our tree resource by considering trees as long-term investments. Trees chosen for use along our city streets, in our parks, and even in the home landscape should be chosen with an eye towards pest resistance, a track record of longevity, and of course, sensible diversity. You might ask, what is sensible diversity? Come to this session and find out. Aerial Brakes vs. Basal Brakes in Rigging - PHILLIP KELLEY How does each brake affect the tree and the individual parts of the rigging system and can they be used safely? Do You Know the Nebraska DOT Requirements? TRP. KEVIN KERN A general training in the components of a Level 1 inspection including state and federal regulations on equipment. Trooper Kern will give guidance on what is inspected on vehicles ranging from pickups and trailers to truck-tractor and semi-trailer combinations. The class will discover what is expected from them during an inspection and what they can expect from the inspecting Trooper Underground Utility Damage Prevention and the One Call Process - JILL GEYER This session will provide practical information regarding (1) how to comply with the law requiring excavators to contact 811 before digging, and (2) the tools that are available to simplify that process.
