3 JAPANESE FLOWER THRIPS JENNY ENCHAYAN, NEBRASKA DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE The Japanese flower thrips (Thrips setosus Moulton) is a species of thrips native to eastern Asia and was identified in 2014 in The Netherlands. In 2016, it was discovered at a single nursery in Michigan. In its native range it is considered a minor pest, however this species is not responding well to biocontrol practices. Like many other thrips species, the Japanese flower thrips is polyphagous meaning it feeds on a wide range of plant species, including hydrangea and hosta, and can survive year round in greenhouses. USDA plant hardiness is listed for zones 4-11, meaning Japanese flower thrips are considered capable of surviving Nebraska winters. It is a relatively weak vector of tomato spotted wilt virus. Damage caused by the Japanese flower thrips appears as typical thrips feeding injury with silvery spots and dark puncture spots. It does not usually feed on pollen, and is mostly considered a leaf-feeding thrips. Currently, this species of thrips is not indicated to cause significant loss in production or cause mortality in hosts. While species of thrips are difficult to identify, Japanese Flower Thrips are a dark colored thrips, females especially. They may not respond well to biocontrol practices and may be more abundant where biocontrols are in use. When identifying in the field, use at least 10x magnification lense and look for the basal portion of the wings to form a white or light gray band that contracts with the dark body and apical wing color. If Japanese flower thrips are suspected, contact Nebraska Department of Agriculture Entomology Program at (402) or agr.plant@nebraska.gov. Tree-killing pests, like the emerald ash borer, hitchhike on firewood and spread insects and diseases that destroy our trees. Keep your backyard, campgrounds and favorite places safe from these pests. PREVENTION IS KEY: Buy locally-harvested firewood. Ask a park ranger or campground host about where to get local firewood when you travel. If you brought firewood in from another area, BURN IT! Don t leave it, don t take it with you. To report potential emerald ash borer, contact the Nebraska Department of Agriculture at NEBRASKA DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE ANIMAL & PLANT HEALTH PROTECTION 3

8 DriftWatch/BeeCheck Specialty Crop Registry Nebraska DriftWatch ( com) is a free online registry and map for commercial specialty crops being promoted to pesticide applicators to reduce occurrences of drift. A commercial crop is defined as one grown to be sold in some way, and includes vineyards, other fruits/ berries, beehives, vegetables, orchards, and certified organic crops, among others. DriftWatch is growing, both in the number of growers and applicators using the site (there are now 13 states and 1 Canadian province participating), and also in increased functionality: People who just have bees (large or small beekeepers, but where honey or pollination services are sold) now have a separate registration system called BeeCheck. There is a separate, visible button for registration at FieldWatch. This process is specific to beekeepers, but apiaries are still incorporated into the main DriftWatch map with the other specialty crops for applicators. When the user clicks a hive location, a half acre circle appears on the map. Beekeepers can now choose whether or not their beehives appear on the public map or are visible only to applicators registered in DriftWatch. Applicators registered in DriftWatch/BeeCheck receive notices when new crop sites are added to the map. The Non-specialty Transition to Certified Organic category is available for non-specialty crops in the transition period required by the National Organic Program. Specialty crops in transition can still be placed in their corresponding specialty crop category. A listing of the crop categories for Nebraska DriftWatch and a description of the service can be seen at NDADWinfo. No computer and/or ? Nebraska DriftWatch now has a paper application form that can be used to complete the process, or it can be done over the phone in a few minutes. Either way, please contact the Nebraska Department of Agriculture (NDA) at DriftWatch is being promoted heavily to commercial and private applicators by NDA and University of Nebraska Extension. This message is also going to aerial applicators being licensed in Nebraska, including those who live out-of-state. Please take a look at DriftWatch-BeeCheck, and consider putting your commercial crops on the map. Renewal notices to already-registered growers will be sent by in early 2017, but growers can review their information and renew now. Has your address changed? Did you renew in 2015 or 2016? Please double check because growers are removed if renewal isn t done each year. If that was the case, please contact me to get reinstated. 9 Session Descriptions for Nebraska GREAT PLAINS Conference Below is a short list of the sesssions being offered during the Nebraska GREAT PLAINS Conference on January in Omaha. View all of the session descriptions and speaker bios on the NNLA website. 9 WINTER 2017 Plants with Style - Kelly Norris Gardeners need chic, sustainable, thriving plants for modern lifestyles. Why settle for lackluster gardens filled with dull, ho-hum plants? Plants after all are the very essence of fashionable gardening. In this spirited, provocative lecture, 20-something plantsman Kelly Norris calls for a garden revolution: out with boring plants and in with stylish alternatives that captivate and enthrall. A passionate horticulturist and lifelong gardener, Kelly is the ideal guide to the botanical riches available to today s gardeners. In chapters on environment, structure, seasonal standouts, and plant combinations he shines a spotlight on the A-list plants in every category plants that will thrive, not merely survive. Along the way, he shows you how to forge a personal style in harmony with your garden s setting and local environment. As Kelly puts it, A garden is the best way to savor life on earth. Let Plants with Style guide you to the plants that will provide a richer, more fulfilling connection between you and your own patch of soil. New Perennials for Modern Gardens - Kelly Norris With all the interest in the New Perennial Movement and a market shift towards sustainable gardening, a new palette of plants has emerged at the intersection of form and function. Perennials used in this style of gardening thrive in social arrangements, translating their native ecologies into beautiful communities of plants that ultimately require less resources and incorporate more diversity into the modern landscape. While many old favorites continue to have a place in these contemporary designs, many underappreciated perennials, particularly natives, have a new context in which to be appreciated. Plantsman Kelly Norris will highlight several examples of sustainable, plant-driven gardens from across the country, comparing and contrasting them to the wild circumstances that inspired them, while introducing the audience to the perennials within them. Great Plants for the Great Plains - Bob Henrickson, Addie Kinghorn & Todd Faller The panel will talk about trees, shrubs, grasses and perennials that have been chosen by the Great Plants for the Great Plains Committee as plants that are hardy here but maybe not used as much, especially in the landscapes. The panel will encourage attendees to expand their plant palette with plant suggestions that will work and are completely hardy at least for the east 2/3 of the state. Examples will be provided that would work in western Nebraska that are similar to the ones recommended for eastern Nebraska. Emerging Paver Trends - Gene Karjala & Chris Boyd This presentation will focus on several new hardscape trends in both materials and installation methods for residential landscape projects. Belgard s portfolio of products includes Rinn technology, Satura technology, and Mirage porcelain pavers that all represent progressive manufacturing techniques. It s important to both understand the associated benefits and installation standards to sell and install these products successfully. Where s Your Flair? - Gene Karjala & Chris Boyd This presentation focuses on the opportunity to enhance your residential landscape wall applications with accenting techniques. Alternative usage of both paver products and wall caps as accenting can take an ordinary wall project to the next level. Learn about appropriate materials and installation techniques to incorporate this practice into your projects. Continued on page 10 Ingredients to a Great Impression QUALITY. VARIETY. EXPERIENCE. 10 Session Descriptions for Nebraska GREAT PLAINS Conference Hydrangeas Jane Beggs-Joles Why doesn t my hydrangea bloom? How do I change the flower color? Why didn t my reblooming hydrangea flower? Hydrangeas generate more questions than any other genus. Learn the facts on this popular (and confusing) group of plants, and find out which species are best for the Great Plains. New Plants for Landscape Challenges - Jane Beggs-Joles The Great Plains can be a challenging climate for landscapes, but plant breeders have developed exciting new varieties that don t just survive harsh climates, but thrive in them. Learn about new plants that will bring durable color to this harsh environment. How to Use Social Media Effectively in Your Business - Mike Bitter Mike Bitter started Affordable Social Media nine years ago with the intent of learning, teaching, and applying best practices when using Social Media tools (Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and YouTube). Working with a wide array of industries, he s learned how to expertly market products and services through Social Media and marketing. The integration of his Social Media Business Model has been instrumental in adjusting the way his clients transfer prospects into their sales funnel, ultimately increasing their sales volume. Using Native Plants in the Landscape - Judy Nauseef With the availability of native plants from growers, wholesalers and garden centers, it is time for landscape designers and landscape contractors to start adding native plants to their projects. Offer beautiful and sustainable designs to your clients. These plants will help to conserve water, reduce the amount of water entering our waterways and create habitat for bees, birds and butterflies. Use basic design principles to incorporate native plants in your projects. Do you ship nursery stock out-of-state? More than just your NE nursery license may be required. Don t risk shipping without proper certification! For info about requirements, contact the Nebraska Department of Agriculture Export Certification Coordinator at: or agr.phyto@nebraska.gov 10
