3 < Cutting the existing monotonous suburban pattern into several pieces is suggested. The slices would have different rules for redevelopment, creating different spatial characters in the area. Characterized by the rules expand, demolish and densify, the slices allow urban pattern to pulse depending on the demands of the actual situation. <NEW LIFE IN A SPRAWL LANDSCAPE> MASTER THESIS PROJECT Location: Vaišvydava, Kaunas, Lithuania Author: Guoda Bardauskaitė Tutor: Martin Arfalk 01-09/2012 The aim of the thesis project is finding an alternative solution for Kaunas suburb development in Lithuania. The city core is facing a problem of decreasing population, while many people choose to move to the suburbs. The project suggests that the suburbanization is not necessarily a negative tendency, but a part of a natural process of the city transformation. It is interpreted as an opportunity to rethink urbanism and propose new strategies and alternative ways of living in city outskirts, besides of mall culture, automobility and single family housing. The project includes a development strategy for the suburbs, transforming them into contributors to the economy of the city providers, rather than consumers. The settlement on the city fringe - Vaišvydava is chosen to represent the proposed transformation in detail. The project illustrates changes in the scale of the village, the block and the household. < The slices, laying northsouth direction, to be interconnected with the main local street, going from east to west, and linking their cores and several parallel secondary links: the road, the recreational waterfront path and the green river path.

4 <THE WILDERNESS OF THE MEGACITY> PROJECT FOR SUSTAINABLE URBAN DYNAMICS COURSE Location: Beijing, China Author: Guoda Bardauskaitė Tutor: Martin Arfalk 09-12/2011 In a civilized Beijing city a human nature is perceived as a wilderness and is not allowed to be exposed. Open spaces are designated for representation and highly controlled, human energy and activities are hidden behind a static mask of the civilized city. The project states that the power of the human energy, if wisely managed, could regenerate city from inside and contribute to its attractive identity. The space to release the energies is gained by making the efficient use of inaccessible and poorly used site areas. Three key places are chosen for the three hills - new landmarks, representing identities of different parts of the site. A new design school, connected to the National Gallery should become a Creative Hill. An existing commercial building with a temple on the top, surrounded by housing for craftsmen, is transformed into a Temple Hill, which embodies and awakes memories of the site as a prosperous commercial hub as well as a spiritual place. A Productive Hill is a cluster of farmers housing and works as a local food factory and store.

8 <JONAVA TOWN PARK: DISCOVER THE FOUR!> COMPETITION PROJECT / 1ST PRIZE Location: Jonava, Lithuania Authors: Guoda Bardauskaitė, Gintaras Duoba 11/2012 Ramybė park is the central park of Jonava town, covering 7ha of its territory. Therefore it is important not to limit it to one function and avoid monotonity. The park must work as a representative and recreational space at the same time and meet the expectations of a variety of citizens. That s why we did not try to find one identity for the whole area, but, contrarily, decided to split the park into four spaces of different qualities and functions. Number four is chosen to symbolize four functions (representative, memorial, recreational and sport), four moods (garden, forest, meadow, yard), four seasons and four age groups (children, teenagers, adults, seniors). The zoning of the park was naturally influenced by the existing character of the spaces and functions of the central city buildings that surround the project area.

9 <SQUARE AS A LIVING ROOM> COMPETITION PROJECT Location: Šakiai, Lithuania Authors: Guoda Bardauskaitė, Gintaras Duoba 10/2012 The concept of the project: square as a living room, where Šakiai town dwellers spend their time as well as welcomes their guests. The space is representative, but not monumental. It is cozy, relaxing and perfect for both active and passive leisure. The idea of the living room emphasizes the hospitality of the town and its friendly relations to the neigbour foreign towns. The distinct textile-like flooring graphics of the square remind a carpet. A playful and eye-catching sculptural composition of enlarged living room furniture is designed to be a dominant object in the square. The giant chairs could be designated for each of the important friend-towns of Šakiai, and have their names engraved in them. The falling water could be integrated into the composition, acting as a tablecloth and inviting children for a play. Instead of typical long monotonous alleys, a decomposed space is designed, which is stopping the passers-by and inviting them for various activities. As a result, the space reminds a sequence of rooms rather than a mesh of paths.

10 <URBAN NOMADS STATION> COMPETITION PROJECT / 3RD PRIZE Location: Malmö, Sweden Author: Guoda Bardauskaitė 04/2012 The project has been designed as an entry for UngBo12 competition for youth housing in Malmö. It suggests that meanwhile many empty plots are waiting to accomodate some new development, the city could use them as emergency housing spaces for young people. The target group for this housing are urban nomads : single cosmopolitan people, who are more interested in travelling and discovering rather than getting settled. Inhabited by a dynamic international community, the station becomes a point for meeting and cultural exchange. The shelter is a modular structure, where one module consists of a wooden box and a plastic inflatable baloon. The baloon works as an individual room. It gets inflated once somebody moves in. The modules, attached to each other, create a long structure, similar to a station.

11 <NOMAD CITY WORKSHOP> NOMAD CITY WORKSHOP Location: Røssvatnet, Norway Authors: Guoda Bardauskaitė, Suzanne van Niekerk, Gabrielle Blais Dufour 03/2012 The workshop organized by a finnish architect Marco Casagrande took place in arctic Norway on a frozen Røssvatnet lake. Each student was supposed to design and build a movable nomad construction as a personal ice-fishing shelter and aurora observatory. The student - built structures all together created a Nomad city. There were arctic conditions: cold and windy with snow blizzards. The shelter was supposed to represent each person s relationship with the surrounding nature, spirit and time on ice. Surviving was just the start in order to find the beauty. The inspiration for a movable shelter was taken from a traditional temporary sami dwlling, called lavvu. We made a contemporary version of lavvu, which is possible to roll and transform, adapting for different uses and varying weather conditions.

12 <MISSIONARY GARDENS> COMPETITION PROJECT / 2ND PRIZE Location: Vilnius, Lithuania Authors: Guoda Bardauskaitė, Delia Moldoveanu, Andrei Deacu 07/2011 The concept for the proposed Missionary gardens design is based on the intersection between the baroque garden tradition and the contemporary ecological perspective towards green city spaces. Ensuring the maximum usage of water features is one of the main goals in the project: 1. The space of Tymas market square is extended towards Vilnia river; the riverbank is turned into a pleasant meeting place. Missionary monastery and the garden were established during the baroque period in Lithuania, which was a source of inspiration for our project. The baroque garden design was based on the ornamental geometry. The maintenance of the gardens was focusing on the preservation of once created designs and decimation of unwanted pioneer species. Nowadays, contrarily, ecologists promote biodiversity in the cities, in this way welcoming all kinds of species. In the proposal for Missionary gardens design we connect both points of view. We combine patches of geometrical maintained areas of carefully selected plants to remind of historical functionality of the garden with the idea of preserving the already existing rich ecosystem. The main idea of the project is to create the contrast between the geometrical structure that characterizes the urban garden and the preservation of the pioneer species that represent the genetic database for the sustainable future city. 2. The ponds become a part of the water cleaning system, which allows a multipurpose usage of the water (bathing, fishing, watering the garden). 3. The springs are highlighted by turning them into important elements of the urban environment.
