6 The city of Rijeka is located in a key position: with Ljubljana, Zagreb and Trieste it creates cross-national quadrangle. This territorial perspective, together with the connection of Rijeka with main European infrastructural networks and corridors opens up the possibility to see Delta project as one of the key strategic projects attracting the interest of a very diverse range of actors. This project builds on the careful upgrading of the proposed program, looking at the strategic projects in the developed EU urban networks such as the Flemish diamond. The distinctive characteristics of the Rijeka economy and its potentials in the terms of synergy between maritime industry, IT and related creative economy branches are incorporated in the programming. The ambition of the project is the transformation of Rijeka in a Mediterranean port metropolis. The green link that runs from the hills along the valley of the Riječina river become the main natural connection that crosses the Delta area, a link that allows the perception of the sea on one side and of the largely uncontaminated inland area on the other. The new Delta will be the in-between territory where the two ecosystems will intersect and merge. The Roman period, the Medieval Croatian, the Austro-Hungarian, Italian, Socialist era and the modern Croatian State. Together with the waterfront all along the city front with its industrial buildings and port structures, they construct an evident progression in scale, from the irregular and fragmented structure of the 12th century s core to the compact urban blocks of the 19th century. Our intervention aims to establish a new scale of the urban fabric that designs the blueprint for 21st century Rijeka. A scale that confronts with the bigness of the logistic structures along the coastline, while accommodating the human scale. The area of the South Delta has been constantly redesigned through time according to the needs of land for a city in expansion. Now that the city is fully entered in its post-industrial phase, and the priority has become the reorganization of the existing structure, we can start looking at the relations between the city and the sea in terms of water reclamation. Incorporating the water into the city means substituting a qualitative approach to a merely quantitative one. We propose to strongly redesign the coastline of Rijeka, in line with its historical development, with an eye on the future driving forces. Water will give the site a formal autonomy and identity, it will be the main structuring element for public and private articulation of space and it will play an active infrastructural role for connectivity and environmental quality.

17 The aim of proposal is to create a compact urban centre promoting diversity, inclusion, connectivity, spatial experience, as well as integrating the River Váh into the city environment. The phased process of transformation therefore begins with intensification of the core itself. The river can be integrated into the city only after achieving the critical density and urban character of its centre. Transformation of the heart of Trenčín builds on the current urban as well as social memory of individual and interconnected stories of people evolving in space and time. The formerly renowned fashion industry of the city has left a nostalgic pathos of Trenčín as a city of fashion. The Bluefield development prioritizes water-related and water-dependent activities supporting connectivity between the river and its riverbanks in order to establish the River Váh as a vital community resource. Extensive transformation of the core of Trenčín is justified only if there is compromise with sensitivity to local needs and expectations balanced with requirements of national and global nature
