4 Under the Rethink Athens project, Panepistimiou Avenue, the city s main thoroughfare with its imposing 19 th century buildings is set to become off-limits to private cars. Instead, it will be covered with natural heat-absorbing materials, planted with trees and crossed by new tramway tracks as well as the first bicycle lane to be constructed in the center of Athens.

7 Newly gained space, as a result of the major step towards a walkable city by reducing car traffic in this area, can be transformed into a vibrant, green and accessible heart of the city. We will take contemporary ideas on climate control, reduction of vehicular movement and programming public realm one step beyond: into an integrated proposal, creating a resilient, accessible and vibrant city, not just limited by its project borders, but linking this area to its adjacent areas and being a catalyst for the whole city. Crucial part of the new transformation is that heat mitigation of public realm will be realized, which will be an issue in many European cities within the forthcoming years
8 Vibrant city -Panepistimiou will change from street to boulevard, by adding inviting spaces to stay to the linear space. Occupying and transforming ground floors, we introduce the concept of the theatre of 1000 rooms towards vacant buildings, organizing cultural events and shift focal points who will create a new vibrant atmosphere. Small open-air podia for outdoor initiatives will be created in public realm. Programs are related to Greek philosophy, science, drama and art. An encroachment zone will improve active frontages and create linkages between the built environment and public realm. Interactive decorative light in public realm will give the right atmosphere during evening hours
9 Resilient City The city centre of Athens will be transformed into a green network, and Panepistimiou will be the central green spine, providing shade and shelter. The resilient strategy includes specific attitudes towards reducing the urban heat and improving thermal comfort). A greening strategy for Athens is combined with a water strategy, since a good condition of plantings is crucial to contribute to heat reduction. Capturing rainwater in underground basins, on top of roofs or elsewhere helps to keep the water in the area.
10 The detailing of the project is very careful and will turn Panepistimiou and its environs to a signature space. And even more than that; it will be a welcoming space for all. Public space is about creating space for people. It is where those masses meet the ground and interact with each other that is the binding element to a city. So it will be important to implement green public spaces linked to the urban network of public realm, and to retain and improve this space, however large or small it is within the city, it is precious commodity.

13 The proposal, Athens PubliCity: an urban neuron for a new city center, for the Re- ThinkAthens competition organizes a public space processing system which develops and expands like an urban neuron. Designed by Nikiforidis-Cuomo Architects, their concept becomes an entire living framework aiming to reactivate and revitalize the urban body. The system acts as a familiar, habitable and dynamic framework able to contain events and situations of both collective and individual actions. More images and architects description after the break.
14 In proportion to the structure of a neuron, the proposed system is both complete and continuous. It takes over the basic linear axis and crosses over the vertical pedestrianized streets, reshaping the squares, creating intimate points of rest, urban services and key intersections. Expansion: The proposal aims to intervene beyond the defined urban space. It rather proposes a uniform organizational framework of the public space that can expand and grow like a living organism. Alteration: The system aims to provide qualitative and functional alteration of the public space creating a variety of environments and alternative perspectives that appeal to user s various states and needs: open-close, introversion extroversion, solitude conviviality.
15 Familiarity: The system reclaims the familiarity of the public space through its ability degree to provide the user with the sense of warmth and intimacy found in a private space. The Amalias Panepistimiou Patision axis is the fundamental backbone including all the basic movements; pedestrians, bicycles, tram and busses. Two important green spaces, the National Garden and Pedio Areos, are found at each end of this axis. This allows it to become a green corridor of connection and development of a unified urban ecosystem. Standing and service points are organized like urban multi-tools, gathering a variety of functions: get coffee or quick food, bicycle parking, explore maps or get informed from digital projections and access the web, use the public phone or recharge their own.
