It is a significant Mediterranean coastal landscape, due to its rich and diverse vegetation, the topographical complexity and position, which offers advantageous views to the city of Chania, the Mediterranean Sea and the White Mountains. The landscape is attractive and wild. In order to maintain the special characteristics and the existing atmosphere, the landscape intervention sets three key objectives: 1. The creation of landscape areas, that embody perceptual territorial experiences 2. The reestablishment of the interrelation between the sea front and background landscape 3. The protection of Kladisos river and the sand dunes. This project utilizes custom computational tools that were developed for the analysis of the spatial characteristics of the area, in order to respond to the specific landscape design challenges. The topographical analysis, site s excursions and photographic documentation lead to the selection of vantage and natural alcove points. These form a landscape network that is verified with the field of visibility study. A rigorous identification and classification of the local vegetation reveals the specific species properties. According to visual qualities, olfactory effects, altitude-path borders, the existing sand dunes and soil erosion restraints, four groups of plants are catalogued. These groups permit to use vegetation as a landscape perceptual compass in the design process according the senses (visual and olfaction areas). The existence of the main highway and the existing buildings in the south of the area, disrupt the continuity of this vulnerable landscape, that creates a fragmented visibility towards the shore and blocks the public access to the coast. Using topography and the visibility study, the research reveals opportunity areas along the highway, to be used as primary and secondary access and connection points. The approach proposes a landscape strategy plan that opens up a vast space for personal appropriation and interpretation. The design implies where to stand or move, via vegetation tactics and key panoramic points, which are used as the exclusive design gesture. The visitor is self guided through vision and olfaction and can move in various paces and paths. To research on these paths, a simulation path finding tool was developed, that computes, given two points in 3d, the path between them in an appropriate target % slope.
