Landscape Conservation Cooperatives There are 22 LCCs LCC Map
LCC Network CA LCC Vision Department of Interior Initiative that began in 2010 LCCs cover the United States and parts of Canada and Mexico LCCs are currently administered by USFWS, BLM, BOR and USFS Each LCC has own Steering Committee federal, state and non-governmental organizations
LCC Network Contribution CA LCC Vision Network Vision: Landscapes capable of sustaining natural and cultural resources for current and future generations. Focus on collaborative conservation planning. Not all focus exclusively on climate change. Since 2010, 700 partner projects (see project catalog at
LCC Network Contribution Federal contribution of about $74 million CA LCC Vision Leveraged partner (other federal, state, nongovernmental) contributions for about $70 million $140 million in funding for science support (planning, decision support, data and monitoring, tribal, vulnerability assessment, adaptation planning)
California Landscape Conservation Cooperative Goal Goal: A growing community successfully collaborating to advance and implement actions that promote resilient and adaptable ecosystems across the landscape in the face of environmental change
Steering Committee Members Steering Committee Members
California Landscape Conservation Cooperative 1420 Project Funding Since 2010, supported more than 35 collaborative science projects CA LCC funding totaled over $5 million Partner contributions added an additional $6 million for total of $11M 9
Five Year Strategic Plan Objectives Objectives 1. Identify key science needs and improve delivery for strategy implementation 2. Enhance climate smart conservation on the landscape 3. Ensure effective and lasting outcomes that support CA diverse & thriving ecosystems
Climate-Smart Conservation Intentional and deliberate consideration of climate change in natural resource management Principles Forward-looking goals Prioritized actions based on climate information Actions designed in ecosystem context Adaptive, flexible management timely to change
Project example Sea level rise impacts to tidal marshes Objectives 18 estuaries in CA, Washington and Oregon 10 National Wildlife Refuges Funded through UGSG, California LCC, Southwest CSC, Northwest CSC and North Pacific LCC
Project example Objectives Establish baseline tidal marsh conditions at the local level Develop site specific sea-level rise models for tidal marshes Use sea-level rise models to assess impacts on marsh plant communities and wildlife Questions: Can tidal marshes keep pace with local sealevel rise? Does this differ between sites? How does this effect plant communities and marsh wildlife?
Coastal Ecosystem Response to Climate Change Cross discipline approach to assess impacts to estuaries Science Delivery NPLCC Science Delivery CALCC
Coastal Ecosystem Response to Climate Change Cross discipline approach to assess impacts to estuaries Inform restoration monitoring and targets Inform baywide planning effort with refuge, city, and NGOs Bayland Goals revision for Climate Change Seal Beach NWR scenario planning in cooperation with R8 I&M and Navy - inform NOAA NERR scenario planning - inform restoration monitoring and targets
Project example Objectives Vulnerability Assessments & Adaptation strategies for Sierra Nevada 8 National Forests (3 early adopters) 2 National Parks 40+ Resource Managers & scientists
Vulnerability Assessment Workshop In partnership with expert elicitation 1. Assess sensitivity 2. Evaluate adaptive capacity 3. Identify climate exposure factors 17
Adaptation Workshop Process In partnership with expert elicitation 1. Develop management goals for each focal resource 2. Evaluate management goal feasibility 3. Develop adaptation approaches 4. Assess implementation feasibility 5. Identify resources to implement adaptation strategies 18
