Finding a topic Objective of the MSc thesis Requirements for MLP students The key challenge of the MSc-thesis is to set up and carry out a scientific research project individually and in an (almost) fully selfresponsible manner Usually in the first or second part of the second MSc year 36 ECTS for a major thesis and 24 ECTS for a minor thesis (instead of internship) For a major thesis (36 ECTS): Planning Theory (period 4) Research Methodology for Planning & Design (period 3) Reflections on Planning and Design Practices (period 1) Planning, Society and Innovation (period 1) Landscape Theory and Analysis (period 2) 1

3 Steps in the process Timing arrangements a) Select a topic and supervisor First supervisor has to be an assistant, associate or full professor of the Land Use Planning group; second supervisor outside LUP group is possible in specific circumstances b) Prepare a research proposal and starting colloquium c) Carry out the research d) Write the thesis report e) Final colloquium and examination Three months in advance: Download and read MSc thesis guidelines LUP Identify a potential supervisor or discuss options with MSc thesis contact person (in Period 5 if you plan to start in September) Discuss topic with potential supervisor (in Period 6 if you plan to start in September) Timing arrangements Available time for supervision Upon start of the research and fixing the topic and supervisor: Fill in the MSc-thesis agreement and have it signed by your study advisor, supervisor and yourself Afterwards, the agreement will be signed by the examiner; you will receive a copy by Major thesis: 50 hours 2 hours for general MSc related activities 5 hours for second reviewer 43 hours for supervision, including reading time, meetings and assistance Indicative time distribution: Thesis proposal (3 to 4 meetings): 10 hours Start colloquium: 2 hours Main chapters (4 to 5 meetings): 20 hours Draft report (1 meeting): 8 hours Colloquium and final examination: 3 hours 3
