Use as much space as necessary to complete the following entries, allowing text to flow onto additional continuation sheets. ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION: Describe architectural features. Evaluate the characteristics of this building in terms of other buildings within the community. Montague House is a 2½ story side gable Greek Revival wood frame structure with corner boards, a glass-enclosed front porch, a large dormer with a pediment, and a 2½ story side gable rear ell. The main block is nine bays wide and six bays deep. The ell is nine bays wide. Montague House has an asphalt shingle roof, clapboard siding, wood window sash and a granite foundation. The enclosed stairway at the east end of the ell has a brick foundation. The main entry is in the building s west elevation, within a glass-enclosed 1-story porch that spans the full width of the house. The porch has four square Greek Revival posts, clapboard knee walls, and three six-pane fixed windows between each post. The second story contains a central 6/6 window that has a more closely spaced pair of 6/6 windows on either side. The attic has a front gable dormer, with a pediment and Greek Revival corner boards, which contains four 6/2 windows. The dormer has a small 3/2 window on its south and north elevations. The south elevation of the enclosed porch contains a nine-pane door that has a 2/3 window on either side. The first and second stories of the main block s south elevation each contain a 6/6 window near the west end of the elevation, and two more closely spaced 6/6 windows near the east end of the elevation. The gable peak has a central 6/6 window. The rear ell s south elevation has a deeply recessed porch that is overhung by the second story. This recessed section contains two doors and four 6/6 windows. Located to the east of the recessed porch, the south elevation s front wall has three evenly spaced 6/6, 2/2 and 6/6 windows, followed by a portico with simple Roman Doric columns and a pediment. The door within this portico has 2/2 panes in its upper half and a boarded-over panel in its lower half. The east end of the ell has a very narrow shed roof addition that appears to enclose a stairway to the second story. The ell s east elevation contains a 6/6 window in the second story, set above the slope of the stairway addition s roof, and a 3/3 window in the gable peak. The stairway addition s north elevation contains a 3/2 window in the first story and a 2/1 window in its second story. The ell s north elevation has a somewhat irregular window and door arrangement. On the first story, this consists of a small 3/3 window, a slightly larger 2/2 window, six 6/6 windows, and a 6-panel door with 3/2 panes in its upper third. The main block s north elevation has an identical window arrangement to what is on its south elevation. The porch s north elevation contains a doorway, with two 6-pane fixed windows on the west side of the doorway. Continuation sheet 1

3 Landscape Visual/Design Assessment Montague House is located on the east side of North Pleasant Street to the south of Marks Meadow Elementary School. The house is located on a flat site and is accessed by a bituminous concrete vehicular drive with granite curbing on the south side of the building. Head-in parking is provided on the north side of the vehicular drive. A bituminous concrete pedestrian walk borders the north side of the vehicular drive and parking spaces. The landscape surrounding the Montague House consists of mown lawn with deciduous and evergreen foundation plantings. A weeping deciduous tree is located on the south side of the house and scattered evergreen trees over mown lawn are located throughout the site. 4 HISTORICAL NARRATIVE Discuss the history of the building. Explain its associations with local (or state) history. Include uses of the building, and the role(s) the owners/occupants played within the community. Overview The University of Massachusetts, Amherst was chartered as the Massachusetts Agricultural College in 1863 but did not accept its first class until As one of two land grant universities in Massachusetts, the university s original mission was agricultural education. Its mission, however, evolved within the first 20 years in response to the changing needs of the United States. While agriculture remains, even today, a mainstay of the University s mission, the University now also supports engineering, science, education, and liberal arts colleges and departments. A full historical narrative of the University of Massachusetts from its founding to 1958 is contained in the survey report. This narrative was prepared in 2009 by Carol S. Weed, Senior Archaeologist with Vanasse Hangen Brustlin, Inc. Shown below are selected highlights from the text of the full historical narrative, along with additional information pertinent to the specific building that is described in this Massachusetts Historical Commission Building Form. This section contains: (1) highlights of the historic periods in the development of the University of Massachusetts, leading up to and including the period when the building was constructed, (2) information about the university in the decade when the building was constructed, (3) information about the circumstances that led to the construction of the building, along with information about its architect, if known, and (4) an analysis of the historic landscape of the building : Administration and Initial Campus Layout As the educational mission evolved in the years after 1863, so did the university s approach to its facilities and its landscape. There was no accepted plan for the layout of the college, despite the preparation of various plan proposals in the 1860s, including separate proposals from the country s preeminent landscape planners, Calvert Vaux and Frederick Law Olmsted, who had formerly worked together on the winning design for New York City s Central Park. Neither Vaux s plan, nor Olmsted s plan to create a campus around a central green, were accepted by the University Trustees : The Early Growth In the absence of a coordinated plan, the Trustees put existing buildings that were acquired with the campus land into service as agricultural laboratories. Campus development for several decades after 1863 was sporadic and focused on the construction of individual buildings to meet specific functional needs of the fledgling university. It was not until after 1900, during a period of rapid student population growth and resultant new building construction, that the University Trustees again sought proposals for comprehensive campus planning. In 1912, a professional landscaping publication reported that Warren H. Manning, formerly affiliated with the Olmsted firm, had spent over four years preparing a comprehensive plan for the University Trustees. The Trustees had considered it imperative for the college to plan harmonious development that would conserve the beauty of campus grounds while meeting the needs of a growing student population whose expanding range of activities was unprecedented. Manning s plan designated three distinct sections of the campus, the Upland, Midland and Lowland Sections. Each section was intended to be the locus of specific functions, with clusters of purpose-built structures to serve those functions. For example, one section would be designated for faculty, women s and horticultural facilities. A second section would contain administration, research, science and student life (dormitory, dining hall, and sports) facilities. The third section would be dedicated to poultry, farming and sewage disposal facilities. Although Manning s Upland, Midland, and Lowland sections are not fully realized, it is apparent that discipline specific groupings were developed. Building clusters, especially those related to agriculture, administration, and the hard and earth sciences (physics, chemistry, and geology) continued to expand through the present day. 5 : World War I and the Transition Years Long range building programs were developed beginning with Landscape Gardening Professor F.A. Waugh s 1919 plan. Like Manning s 1911 plan, Waugh s 1919 work emphasized building groups in order to maintain the proper balance between buildings, cultivated fields, meadows and lawns, forests and trees. By World War I and continuing through the 1920s, University records frequently refer to the inadequacy of the physical plant; the lack of class room space; the lack of properly ventilated and lighted spaces; and the danger of having to cancel classes because of a lack of appropriate facilities. Expansion of the campus through acquisition of additional land was considered essential if the University were to construct new and better facilities to address these deficiencies and excel as an institution of higher education. The 1920s, however, had the fewest buildings constructed of any decade in the campus history to that point. The slow pace of building is largely attributed to the annual funding levels that were appropriated by the Massachusetts Legislature during the decade Following World War I, the administration was cognizant that its core missions had to be expanded to meet the educational requirements of a rapidly industrializing world. For the first time, the university administration focused on the development of comprehensive 5- and 10-year plans which meshed curricula needs with facility upgrades and expansion. During the decade, the agricultural experiment station was expanded, the Brooks tobacco barn and associated farm land were acquired, new laboratories (Chenoweth, Goessmann) were built, and common spaces created (Memorial Hall). Funding, however, continued to inhibit development and the capital expenditure program was still heavily indebted to public sources. Montague House Montague House is a legacy structure that was conveyed with the land when the Massachusetts Agricultural College acquired the farmland associated with this structure, which appears to have happened in 1923, based on the Facilities Department s records. No information has been discovered to date that documents the history of this property before it was acquired by MAC. Landscape Analysis Montague House (1923) is located outside the core of the campus and is not shown on historic campus maps or plans. No historic photographs of the building have been located; however, based on campus building construction history it is evident that the landscape associated with Montague House was significantly impacted by the construction of Marks Meadow Elementary School (originally Furcolo Hall) immediately to the north of the house in 1962, with subsequent additions. Changes in circulation patterns from residential scale vehicular and pedestrian circulation to institutional scale circulation has resulted in the addition of bituminous concrete parking areas to the sough of the house and a vehicular turn-around at the eastern side of the house. The scale of Marks Meadow Elementary School, located immediately to the north and east of Montague House, is inconsistent with the scale of Montague House. The building is not recommended individually eligible as it does not possess individual significance nor does it display any significance in construction or architectural design. The building s physical integrity has been diminished through the addition of an attic dormer and the enclosure of the front porch. Although a large number of buildings on the campus are recommended eligible as part of a potential historic district, the Montague House is not recommended eligible as a contributing resource to this district as it is physically isolated from this concentration of buildings and is separated from them not only by distance, but also by a series of surface parking lots and the 1962 Mark Meadow Elementary School immediately north of the building.
