IDENTITY IN LANDSCAPE: THE AMERICAN WEST AND ITS RELATION TO THE CREATION OF ARCHITECTURAL SPACE An investigation into the relationship between landscapes, land art and contemporary architecture of the American west. Introduction The American west is a place of mystery and enchantment for both local and foreign cultures. The rough austere and formidable character inherent in it are a thing of wonder and amazement pulling the individual closer while still retaining the original allure. The relationship it has to the human inhabitants is unlike any other posing as a muse for many a poet, author and artist alike. The Architect is not immune from this draw, and the contemporary architecture born from this place is unique to its origins. Architecture, art and landscape have always shared these common factors; you can become familiar with them through photographs but it is not until you experience them with all 5 senses do you come to a complete understanding of the power they hold. Within the themes of landscape, land art and architecture lay the fundamental questions of timelessness of relation to place and land, and how can a built work evolve to relate to us by upholding these ideals. These are all questions sought after through the American southwest. Objective The goal of this investigation is to discover the common (and uncommon) connections between landscape, land art and architecture of the American southwest. To use this personal investigation and discovery to produce a body of architectural work which has a greater reverence and connection to the
2 site/landscape upon which it is situated; and explore how architecture and the landscape can become as seamless as possible while still providing for the needs of the program to which it serves. The research will by documented by means of hand sketching and photography. Photography provides the initial essential means by which the existing conditions can be examined, and sense of time can be explored. Sketching then provides a direct means of interpretation; a great mode of understanding through careful investigation which provides a unique and in depth understanding of the subject matter at hand. Sketches will become the medium of record, and the documentation of the findings uncovered through travel and research. Travel Plan The proposal offered here outlines a road trip across a major portion of the American Southwest. By traveling through this unique landscape, by automobile, the mystique which has come to epitomize America to the rest of the globe reveals itself through emersion. This becomes the only viable way to completely understanding the monumentality and shifts of time scale this vast expanse of territory offers. Each location was investigated and selected for several factors; asking the following questions in regards to its merit. 1 How does it enhance the unique characteristics of the site to which it is located? 2 What are the unique spacial characteristics which define the work or landform? 3 Why are the qualities present helping to uphold a sense of timelessness, or the marking of time at different scales in regards to the human being? The trip begins with air transportation from Salt Lake City to El Paso, Texas. Arrival in El Paso is used as a staging area, where a rental vehicle is obtained, as well as assembling some necessary supplies for the extensive road trip to follow. From El Paso, the journey moves southwest, to Marfa, Texas to visit several key artworks by Donald Judd and the like, which deal with themes of minimalism, time, and landscape. From Marfa, the journey back tracks slightly, and heads north, north east up to Albuquerque, NM. New Mexico posses the land art works of Charles Ross (Star Axis), Walter De Maria ( the Lighting Field) as well as the Native American settlement of Chaco Canyon. Moving west from New Mexico to Arizona, which holds the Roden Crater by James Turrel, and eventually down to Phoenix and Tucson; where one begins an understanding of how the landscape shapes the architecture of the American Southwest. Moving on from the urban center of Phoenix northward to the Grand Canyon, and a visit to the Grand Canyon skywalk which demonstrates not only the importance of landscape to the current culture of the area especially in relation to tourism. From there, the trip enters into Nevada to experience the Double Negative by Michael Heizer. Eventually ending in Los Angeles, where progressive architecture abounds and the links to landscape appear to become less evident yet the uniqueness of the work here hardly escapes the ideas which are born from the American Landscape. The trip concludes with a return flight from Los Angeles back to Salt Lake City. The excursion will encompass a two week time frame.
3 The journey is to commence Mid April, 2015 and is targeting, but not limited, to the following locations. Land Art Installations (Selected) Multiple Works, Chinati Foundation / Donald Judd ( Marfa, TX) Double Negative Michael Heizer (Clark, NV) Star Axis Charles Ross, (Anton Chico, NM) Roden Crater James Turrell (Flagstaff, AZ) Lightning Field, Walter De Maria (Catron Co.
