Photo: Sean Deckert, 2018 Canal Convergence 2018: Request for Public Art Proposals Deadline for submissions is Tuesday, May 15, 2018, at 11:59 p.m. (Mountain Daylight Time). This call is specifically targeting interactive and/or light-based installations. An additional Call for Creative Programming will be posted over the summer for artists interested in proposing additional workshops, performances and other programming elements. Scottsdale Public Art seeks proposals for outdoor, temporary public artworks to be featured in, around and above the Arizona Canal in Scottsdale, Arizona, during Canal Convergence Water + Art + Light Canal Convergence will be on view for 10 days, from November 9 18, Les Luminéoles by Porté par le vent, created for the Lyon Light Festival Photo: Sean Deckert,

All local, regional and international artists, including architects, designers, artists and multimedia specialists, are invited to submit proposals for installations that take into consideration one or more of the themes below: ART + WATER + LIGHT: Does the art address the confluence of art, water and light through placement, fabrication, conceptual content or material use? Interactivity: How can the audience interact with the work? Day and Night: Art should have the potential for being visually appealing as both a daytime and nighttime presence (nighttime preferred but daytime is a plus). Sustainability and Water Conservation: Does the work incorporate aspects of sustainability or water conservation? The use of solar power, biodegradable, and recycled/ recyclable materials is also encouraged. Artist participation is integral to Canal Convergence! Featured artists are expected to attend our Canal Convergence Launch Party and at least one of the following: provide an artist talk, participate in a panel discussion, lead a workshop, or propose a fun new way to engage our community throughout the event timeline. Photo: Dayvid LeMmon, 2012 Overview + History Sonoran Desert Canal Culture Arizona s Salt River Valley canal culture is rich in history, reaching back to the Hohokam civilization of 300 B.C. A.D Today s canals are still desert lifelines for human inhabitation, managed by Salt River Project (SRP). SRP s 131 miles of water and power utility corridors enable our modern cities to exist, thrive and grow. More information about the Valley s canal system and its history is available at SRPnet.com. Scottsdale Public Art The mission of Scottsdale Public Art is to serve as a leader in defining art in the public realm through creative place-making, signature cultural events, exhibitions and installations contributing to the community s creative, cultural and economic vitality. Canal Convergence Water + Art + Light Events Since 2012, Scottsdale Public Art has partnered with the City of Scottsdale and SRP to present Canal Convergence annually at the Scottsdale Waterfront. Canal Convergence s free and immersive events feature innovative large-scale installations, hands-on activities and workshops, and live music and performances that provide a truly unique experience. The focus of Canal Convergence is on the canal architectural form, its function as a power and water utility corridor and its history as a lifeline for humans in the Sonoran Desert. Photo: Sean Deckert, 2014 Details Eligibility All local, regional, and international artists, artist teams, architects, designers, and multimedia specialists are invited to submit a proposal for Canal Convergence. Budget We will accept budgets between $5,000-$30,000 USD, with a limited number of larger budgets being awarded to major works of a larger physical scale. Artists wishing to provide proposals for larger-scale budgets are required to demonstrate experience successfully producing projects to the scale being proposed. Applicants are encouraged to apply for a budget appropriate to their project and to account for all expenses in a detailed budget estimate. Selection Process A selection committee, including Scottsdale Public Art staff, Scottsdale Public Art board members and community stakeholders will select artists for November s Canal Convergence. Selection will be based on adherence to the listed themes and requirements as well as suitability for the site and event. Priority is given to new artworks created for Canal Convergence. Installation Scottsdale Public Art can provide up to four assistants for each installation. Within your proposal, please consider how the work will be installed, including manpower, equipment needs and an installation timeline. Safety Artwork must be durable and able to withstand unpredictable weather conditions for the duration of the installation. Artists are asked to consider in their proposal the Arizona environment, which can potentially include extreme heat, cold, wind and rain. Installations may require approval of a structural engineer. Artists are responsible for addressing safety concerns, including securing all electrical and support cabling with durable covers to eliminate any tripping hazards. Site Activation Please see the images of our event site on page 10 and consider activating the site through installations that: Are suspended above the canal Float or sit in the canal Activate the bridges or grassy walkways along the canal Are projected at eye level or above 5

7 Submission Requirements Artists should address, as a part of their application, how their artwork fits into one or more of the themes below: ART + WATER + LIGHT Interactivity Day and Night Sustainability and Water Conservation Please submit the following in an to CanalConvergence@ScottsdaleArts.org with the subject line Canal Convergence Submission. Your combined submission materials must be at or below 10 MB in size. Note that each artist or team may submit up to two ideas or artworks; please include a separate submission with documentation for each idea/artwork being proposed. 1. Completed Canal Convergence Application Packet, saved as a PDF with the artist or artist team in the file name a. Please describe in detail your proposed artwork narrative and incorporate the following information in 1 2 pages: i. Artist name or team name and country of origin ii. Contact information iii. Detailed description of proposed artwork iv. Title of work v. How is your project related to one of the four themes stated above? vi. Are you drawn to a specific site location? If so, where? vii. As a part of this call, we ask that you participate in a workshop or another activity in relation to your project. Please list possible ideas. b. Résumé of artist or artist team (three pages or fewer) c. Detailed project budget (one page): Include clear line items breaking down costs for: artist fee, artwork fabrication costs, shipping, insurance, travel/accommodations d. Detailed project timeline (one page): Include proposal development, material acquisition, fabrication, installation, travel/etc. e. Contact information for three professional references ( , phone number) 2. JPEG Image files (100 dpi at minimum 5.5 x 7 ) a. Project images or renders (up to 10 images): i. Images of existing work being proposed for temporary installation ii. OR Detailed sketches, renderings, plan drawings, photos of models, video narratives or presentations of new ideas including actual dimensions and plans for placement b. Up to five images of previous or existing work (Videos should be uploaded to hosting sites that can be accessed through a link included in your proposal) 3. A corresponding image list for all submitted JPEGs that show artist s name, title of work, medium and any other information to clarify intended visual appearance, fabrication methods and technology associated with the proposal viii. Please list where you have shown your work in the past year or will be showing in the coming year. 6

Questions regarding the project should be directed to Colleen Donohoe, Public Art manager at Scottsdale Public Art, at Thoughts to consider when developing a proposal: Review previous Canal Convergence projects at CanalConvergence.com to get a sense of the space and the overall event context. Community participation/engagement and interactive artworks are highly preferred. We are looking for ideas big and small for a variety of sites in the Scottsdale Waterfront area along the canal, green areas, paths, and surrounding infrastructure. Consider how your proposal may relate to the idea of water conservation or other issues of sustainability. The use of solar power is encouraged. Light-based projects, video or suspended installations may use the surrounding infrastructure and architecture. Consider how your proposal helps activate the Scottsdale Waterfront by drawing people to the canal banks. Remember the suggested themes: water, art, light and human interaction; sustainable sources of water for the desert environment; laws of nature; and the intersection of contemporary art and human connection to the natural Sonoran Desert environment. 7 Spiraling Droplets by Aphidoidea. Photo: Sean Deckert, 2015 What You Should Know The Arizona Canal From Soleri Bridge and Plaza to Marshall Way Bridge: Approx. 750 feet From Marshall Way Bridge to Goldwater Boulevard: Approx. 500 feet Canal width: Approx. 55 feet, wall to wall Water depth: Approx. 7 feet, 3 inches Canal wall: Approx. 7 feet, 9 inches, from the canal floor to top of vertical wall plus a 1-foot decorative cap Total canal wall height: Approx. 8 feet, 9 inches Water velocity: Approx. 3-5 feet per second Fishing allowed with Arizona state fishing license. No swimming or boating. Canal water is not treated and often contains debris. Placing artwork in the canal may result in stains or other damage. Issues of Concern SRP reviews and approves usage concepts relative to canal function, water safety and pedestrian access. Canal function cannot be interrupted. More than 1 foot of water elevation displacement is not allowed. Canal banks must allow for access by SRP vehicles and recreational users. Temporary obstructions must be negotiated and planned. Anything placed in the water must be nontoxic and eventually removed. Attachments to the canal, walls, railing and/or banks cannot damage the site. No water may be removed from the canal for any reason. Operations The Arizona Canal is operated by Salt River Project (SRP) as a power and water utility corridor. Power is underground along both banks of the Scottsdale Waterfront. The City of Scottsdale (CoS) has a license agreement with SRP that allows canal bank improvements, paths, landscaping, lighting, outdoor seating, patios and limited events. There are multiple property owners and developers at Scottsdale Waterfront. Locations Depictions of installation locations around the canal can be found on the following pages, though the locations are not limited to those photographed. You may activate the following: The banks of the canal, which can be grassy, rocky or simply dirt (pathways must remain clear of any obstruction) The water of the canal (see dimensions and issues above) The air above the canal 9

12 Installation Locations Seeking proposals for installations, big and small, to activate the following areas of the Scottsdale Waterfront with interactive and light-based artwork: 1 View of canal from Goldwater Boulevard 2 Southwest bank of canal 3 Southwest bank of canal, lookout and grass hill 4 Northwest bank of canal near Marshall Way Bridge There are four grassy areas of similar size along the northwest path. 11

13 Installation Locations (cont.) 5 Marshall Way Bridge Art may be attached to the wire mesh structure above the bridge and the metal grate below. They are located on the west (above, left) and east (above, right) sides of the bridge. 6 The underpass A pathway runs under the north side of Marshall Way Bridge. There are landscaped insets on both sides of the underpass. 12

Consider how your piece may fit within this space and in relation to these elements. 11 Soleri Plaza The portion of Soleri Plaza alongside the canal is free of main stage traffic and may be used for artwork placement. 14
