New Science Block, Lord Wandsworth College, Hampshire West Waddy are progressing with designs for a new stateof-the-art science block at Lord Wandsworth College, Hampshire. The commission for the 12-lab science facility follows the Masterplan Approval success we achieved for our client last September. In addition to Physics, Chemistry and Biology laboratories the building will also house a conference room with catering provision, a Faculty room, technicians prep areas and quiet study space for student break-out sessions as well as casual seating areas. 2 WWADP wins Heritage Lottery Fund Competition at Tiverton Museum Following our success at Winterbourne Medieval Barn, West Waddy are delighted to have been selected as architects to lead on development proposals at Tiverton Museum in Devon. The Museum has secured a Heritage Lottery Fund grant to develop a business plan to attract new audiences to strengthen its offer in order to secure a viable long term future. Working alongside Business Planning Consultants, Iridescence, the practice will be creating a masterplan for the Museum buildings. The plan will include a feasibility study for transforming the way the building is used including enhancing its character and kerb appeal and exploring the potential for releasing space and reinterpreting the presentation of exhibits and the Museum s collection. The masterplan aims to improve the current visitor experience and generate new income streams to ensure the Museum s financial viability for the next generation and beyond. National Planning Policy Framework review as PM aims to boost house building Partner and RIBA Planning Group Chair, Philip Waddy, recently attended the launch of the revised NPPF. In her keynote address, PM Theresa May set out proposed changes to planning rules. She went on to say that she expects developers to do their duty to Britain and build the homes the country needs. The final version of the plan is expected to be published later this year. Many people in the UK today, particularly young people, fear they will never be able to own a home of their own - Theresa May, 2018 ARCHITECTURE TOWN PLANNING URBAN DESIGN MASTERPLANNING PROJECT MANAGEMENT DEVELOPMENT CONSULTANCY
The New Builds Are Coming West Waddy s Urban Design team featured in the BBC2 Series The New Builds Are Coming: Battle in the Countryside aired earlier this year. The two-part documentary posed the question How do you mend the broken housing market?. Associate, Hannah Smart, shared her views, articulating how Architects and Urban Designers approach the issue of integrating new housing within existing settlements. The art of making places for people Film-maker Richard Macer followed the West Waddy team as they went about their work, joining them around the table and out on site, as he explored the government s decision to free up the countryside to developers. The team shared insight into how they balance the necessity for new homes with often conflicting community factors, applying sensitivity and creativity while creating places for people. They also explained how urban design bridges the two disciplines of architecture and town planning and is key to creating sustainable developments and the necessary conditions for a flourishing economic life. You can watch the two-part documentary on catch-up TV.
West Waddy secures permission for 16 new Harwell homes On behalf of Ede Homes, West Waddy has secured Reserved Matters permission for 16 new homes at Harwell. The project involved three of West Waddy s disciplines (Architecture, Urban Design and Town Planning), and once again the strength of a multi-disciplinary working pattern paid off! Following the Case Officer s presentation and representation by our client and a local objector, members of the Planning Committee debated the case and voted unanimously in favour of the development scheme. Officers were particularly complimentary toward the choice of materials, the layout and the quality of the open space that would be provided. A comprehensive design process informed this positive result. Architectural form and detail was specifically designed to fit in with both the setting and character of the central area of Harwell, and the adjacent, more contemporary existing development. It is another excellent step taken to contributing towards housing supply in the authority, and is locating homes in the right place within a key area for growth. We are delighted by the way WWADP approached the whole process, from designing the contemporary and individual homes, to obtaining a RM permission which we very much look forward to implementing. We always felt in safe hands and had every confidence that we would create a scheme that us the developer, the local residents, the VOWH and our eventual purchasers can be truly proud of. We look forward to working with them again on future sites. ARCHITECTURE TOWN PLANNING URBAN DESIGN MASTERPLANNING PROJECT MANAGEMENT DEVELOPMENT CONSULTANCY
WWADP at The Listed Property Show, Olympia West Waddy were guest speakers at the Listed Property Show in Olympia, London, earlier this year. The show is the major national showcase event for the Listed Property Owners Club and attracts thousands who have an interest in maintaining, altering, renovating or purchasing a listed property. The practice was on hand throughout the weekend to offer advice and guidance on all matters relating to works to listed buildings and partner, Stephen Simkins, delivered a seminar on how to achieve improvements in the energy efficiency of historic buildings with a toolkit of practical guidance for all those in attendance. West Waddy continues its strong track record working in the heritage sector and provides expert advice to owners of listed properties at all stages of the development process, from obtaining listed building consent, to the specification and delivery of specialist conservation and expert repairs on site. For more information regarding heritage services contact Stephen Simkins at s.simkins@westwaddy-adp.co.uk Considering ecology at an early stage Ecology should be an important consideration at the early stage of any development. That s certainly our approach here at West Waddy. Ecologist Stephen Pickles conducts our Phase 1 habitat surveys. By determining what habitats are present on a site, Stephen is able to assess the need for any further targeted surveys. This is particularly important if any protected species might be present on the site or building. Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 all reptiles are protected, making it illegal to intentionally kill or injure them. So conducting a study is not just of ecological importance, it has legal implications too. Common reptiles can be found in a variety of habitats but due to hibernation between November and February surveys can only be out from April to September. If reptile presence is found on a site Stephen is able to advise on mitigation, ensuring a successful outcome for the wildlife and client. Identify your planning strategy and always have a Plan B Partner Alan Divall was asked by RIBA to provide his top ten top tips for a RIBA article on preparing and submitting planning applications. The article, that was shared nationally with RIBA members, followed on from his successful series of Core CPD presentations he delivered across the UK last year. The feature entitled Identify your planning strategy and always have a Plan B provided tips to ensure that every avenue was covered, from considering the different scenarios that might arise to project managing the application from start to finish.
West Waddy plans for continued success in 2018 Planners exam success When it comes to making the grade our planners have notched up their own success too! Last summer Iain Summerfield qualified as a Chartered Town Planner. His success was followed by colleague Hugh Shepherd who passed his exams at the start of 2018, becoming a fully chartered member of the Royal Town Planning Institute. RIBA Part was a successful year across the Practice seeing the team notching up Outline Permission success for new homes in Carterton, Bicester, Curbridge and the Chilterns. Other successes from last year included Hybrid Planning for Lord Wandsworth College and permission for 79 new dwellings at RAF Upper Heyford. We also won appeals in East Hendred and Carterton We are continuing our success in 2018 with planning permission for Headington School s new 7 million Art School, permission for 16 new homes in Harwell, a heritage centre in Winterbourne and a range of new commissions coming on to our books. Our planners, architects and urban designers have demonstrated the strength of a multi-disciplinary working pattern this is most evident when looking at the service we offer our clients. We are particularly excited by the emerging projects we are currently investigating concerning Urban Regeneration. Ralph Saull became a fully fledged architect after passing his RIBA Part 3. Ralph joined West Waddy in June 2011 and has worked on a range of projects from large scale masterplans to extension and alteration works. Urban design promotion Greta Leonaviciene has been promoted to Urban Designer. Greta joined the Practice in 2016 and has been involved in mixed-use master-planning Ralph is also an associate Lecturer in Architecture, teaching on the Year One Undergraduate programme at Oxford Brookes. schemes as well as playing a crucial role with residential schemes including new settlements of homes. 7 Urban regeneration placemaking Thames Valley Young Planners Network CPD Iain Summerfield and Sarah Murray recently delivered a CPD to members of the Thames Valley Young Planners Network, hosted at Oxford Brookes University. Iain began the session with an introduction to the process of becoming a Chartered Town Planner with the RTPI. our purpose is through design This was followed by Sarah s presentation detailing the importance of collaborative working, particularly from the role of an Urban Designer within the planning process. Working in conjunction with retail specialists, Urban Design Associate Hannah Smart, has been consulting with clients to look at ways to revitalise our town centres. Hannah has produced with the support of the West Waddy team a range of creative schemes and masterplans for market towns in Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire. Her proposed plans aim to bring people back into the towns not just for shopping but recreation Giving something back When it comes to giving something back West Waddy has never shied away from getting involved. Last year saw the office raise monies for MacMillan and Children In Need as well as organising food collections for the local food bank and sponsoring Abingdon s Open Door Heritage event. The offices also offered their space and support to the newly formed Riverside Rotary Club to hold meetings and events. too. Hannah also champions the importance of placemaking by engaging with all parties, including developers, planners, design services, local politicians and existing communities to add value through design. This year our West Waddy team will be scaling new heights as they do their bit for charity. In June a team from the Practice will be facing the Three Peaks Challenge. Over a 24 hour period they will endeavour to climb the three highest peaks of Scotland, England and Wales. We will be sharing regular updates on their progress via our twitter
Back to Blewbury for an onsite update In this issue we provide an update on Pennie Lane. Last spring West Waddy secured Planning Approval for the 4/5 bedroom contemporary replacement dwelling on the outskirts of Blewbury, South Oxfordshire. The site required arboricultural and bat survey to be carried out to secure planning ahead of construction commencing in November. Due to the location s poor ground conditions piled foundations were required. The build will incorporate a range of materials and modern methods of construction to ensure energy efficiency, with the completed project featuring elements of facing brick, render and a standing seam metal roof. The design utilises modern methods of construction with photovoltaic battery technology. ARCHITECTURE TOWN PLANNING URBAN DESIGN MASTERPLANNING PROJECT MANAGEMENT DEVELOPMENT CONSULTANCY
Winterbourne Medieval Barn, Bristol West Waddy are delighted to have achieved Planning Permission and Listed Building Consent for works at Winterbourne Medieval Barn near Bristol. Built in 1342, the barn is a unique survival of the medieval agrarian economy and deemed a building of national importance. The project will see Winterbourne Medieval Barn and associated buildings transformed into a multipurpose heritage venue, that will celebrate the history and heritage of this extraordinary site and its environment. Once complete the heritage venue will offer a range of activities from rural craft workshps to music and theatre performances that will help expand incomegenerating potential and secure its long-term future. The proposals were developed in close association with Historic England and South Gloucestershire Council and are the subject of a major National Lottery Fund application.
Sustaining relationships in Hampstead Norreys Sustainability was a key condition for this replacement dwelling in rural Thatcham Berkshire. Airtightness, insulation and an air source heat pump were requirements of the brief, helping to ensure that the contemporary 5-bed family home achieved maximum thermal performance. This full commission with Eling Estate is testament to our commitment and value in nurturing ongoing client relationships. arboricultural consultancy services Tree Surveys to BS5837:2012 Constraints Plans Impact Assessments Retention/Removal Plans Tree Protection Plans Method Statements Site Monitoring and Supervision Conservation Area Notifications TPO applications ARCHITECTURE TOWN PLANNING MASTERPLANNING URBAN DESIGN Surveys, plans and statements Here at West Waddy we are able to offer our clients a range of consultancy services relating to trees, development processes & planning. 11 Ferry Cottage, North Hinksey Village, Oxford West Waddy were instructed to devise a solution to significantly extend this Grade II listed property near Oxford, after previous designs had failed to gain conservation officers approval. In contrast to the traditional cottage our team created an unashamedly modern extension that offers a high quality, sustainable design solution. A frameless glass link preserves the existing cottage whilst the extension is dealt with in a contemporary fashion to avoid confusing the history of the house. Planning permission and listed building consent have both been secured with the Conservation Officer particularly praising the design approach.
US RIBA President s Practice visit We are an integrated Architectural, Town Planning, Urban Design and Masterplanning consultancy West Waddy Partner and RIBA Planning Group Chair, Philip Waddy, invited, RIBA President and Director of HTA Architects, Ben Derbyshire to our Abingdon studios earlier this year. HTA Design is a multidisciplinary practice with offices in London, Manchester and Edinburgh. Ben chatted with the team, sharing his insight and experiences that he has encountered through his time in the industry and running his own practice. In answering the team s questions he emphasised the importance of continual improvement, including ensuring endorsement and qualifications are achieved in all areas of the practice. Ben also shared how you shouldn t be afraid to collaborate with competitors and that nothing is more important than quality. We offer a strong design-led, client-focused and results driven service Our record in achieving planning consent and delivering projects on time and on budget is exceptional We have a rich pedigree of over 125 years continuous practice Our purpose is to create and deliver attractive built environments.
