COLLABORATIVE & INTEGRATIVE INTERDISCIPLINARY SCHOLARSHIP Blue Dot Sustainable Demonstration House Design Charrette Participated in a three-day charrette with a broad-based interdisciplinary team of both professionals and academics, ranging in expertise from design to engineering, construction, technology and urban ecology. The team collaborated on all aspects of creating a demonstration house and garden that maximized the sustainability benefits of the site. Mason UniverCity District Master Plan Working with a widely interdisciplinary team of developers, professional designers, transportation engineers, academics, city officials, ecologists and community members, one of the first achievements of the UniverCity Urban was the creation of a master plan to guide the future growth of the Mason Corridor. Centered on the downtown area of Mason stretching from the Poudre River to the CSU campus, the master plan laid out recommendations for development, transit, economic activity and infrastructure to guide the future of this important district in downtown Fort Collins. I am a co-principal investigator for an interdisciplinary team that was recently awarded a $100,000 grant by the office of the Vice Provost for Research under the auspices of the Catalyst for Innovative Partnership program in recognition of our proposal, entitled "Fort Collins Resiliency: EcoDistricts and Triple-Helix Community Development". The primary goals of this research effort have grown out of my earlier work looking at the elements that make for healthy and sustainable urban environments. Working with ecologists, sociologists, natural resource specialists, engineers, artists, and a veterinarian, this particular project will be centered on the establishment of a framework for an EcoDistrict Master Plan for a portion of Fort Collins. An EcoDistrict is an urban environment that is designed or retrofitted in such a way to maximize the sustainability of the area, both in terms of the built environment and natural /ecological systems. Much of the work to be carried out under the auspices of this grant will be focused on developing guidelines and strategies for the eventual build-out of a realized EcoDistrict in Fort Collins. Urban Initiatives Demonstration Living Wall: In conjunction with the Urban, I was part of an interdisciplinary team that was awarded a grant by the

5 City of Fort Collins to build the first demonstration living wall in the city. My students and I worked with horticulturists, engineers and city officials to work out the design parameters for such a wall and I organized a design competition among the students, which was adjudicated by developers, city personnel and urban lab members to select a winning design for the wall, which will be built in the spring of Mason Railroad Urban Design Competition: I am a member of a small interdisciplinary subcommittee of the Urban that is in the process of launching a national design competition to use urban design and site interventions to address the negative impact of the railroad right-of-way located in the middle of the Mason Street corridor in Old Town Fort Collins. Award funding has been secured and the design brief for the competition is currently being written, with a planned announcement by the end of January, Fort Collins Right-of-Way Codes: I have been working for two years now with an interdisciplinary group of city officials, developers and academics within Urban to address the existing development codes in place in Fort Collins that inhibit a more vibrant street life from being developed in the city. This work grew out of designs prepared by my graduate students in LAND630, Introduction to Urban Design, that raised many issues with the existing land use codes that the Urban is now working to rectify. I was asked to participate as part of an interdisciplinary working group for the Equity and Environmental Justice GCRT Team, which was recently awarded a SoGES grant to explore how and why equity and environmental justice are important elements of the study of the environment, public health and sustainability. Faculty from no less than six of CSU's colleges are represented in this research. I have been providing insight and feedback regarding environmental justice issues from a landscape architecture and urban design perspective and helping the group consider ways in which to facilitate these types of interdisciplinary research. 9 LAND110 as it previously existed was an introductory course, exposing students to the multifaceted history and practice of landscape architecture. Traditionally, my predecessors have taught the course as an exploratory drawing studio, familiarizing students with important landscape design works from history and exploring design ideas through sketching and writing. However, the study of landscape architecture is such a broad topic that this narrow approach does a disservice to new students' understanding of the field. This approach is extremely limiting and fails to recognize the dramatic changes that have emerged in academia and practice over the past two decades. Further, the current organization of the course tends to dissuade students who are more scientifically and technically inclined from learning more about the program and the profession, instead favoring artistically and creatively talented students. Furthermore, as a gateway course, the current structure exposes students to only a narrow slice of landscape architectural education, ignoring many aspects of design and practice that would appeal to a greater variety of students. The course improvements I've made seek to correct these deficiencies and improve student learning outcomes. My new approach to teaching this course is based upon a deconstruction of the profession of landscape architecture, examining its historical roots in their social, political and environmental contexts. The curriculum follows the field s development not only as an aesthetic pursuit, but also as a creative, yet scientifically-based, response to pressing social and environmental needs. Landscape architecture is uniquely situated at the confluence of many other fields of study and pursuits, including the fine arts, horticulture, engineering, environmental science, city planning and visual communication, among others. By presenting the study of the profession through this more holistic lens, the course may appeal to a much broader cross section of University students, attracting a more diverse and well-rounded student body to the program. The ultimate goal in expanding and rethinking the pedagogy of the class is to diverge from the traditional model that focuses almost exclusively on design and drawing skills to better engage students and create a more balanced learning community within the program that values all aspects of landscape architectural education. Through the revised scope of this course, students with strengths and interests in a variety of topics, including creative endeavors as well as scientifically-based problem solving, can find a home in the program and understand that there is a place for them in the profession. This diversity of students will, in turn, nourish a learning ecology that enhances the education of all students in the program through the interdisciplinary sharing of ideas and knowledge. Acclimating students to learning alongside classmates who may have very different aptitudes will potentially improve their educational experience and better prepare them for the increasingly collaborative nature of landscape architectural practice. I was selected to receive a TILT / Reinvention Center Science of Learning Course Development Grant to further refine and refurbish this course, to be funded in the academic year. Integration of Service Learning Fall 2013, LAND 630 Topics in Urban Design This course applied the LENSES Framework, an urban design methodology developed by the Institute for the Built Environment at CSU, to the design of the Mason UniverCity District, an urban planning project of central concern to the City of Fort Collins. Students collaborated with an inter-disciplinary team of outside consultants in a district master-planning charrette. Students presented their research and proposals to city officials, design professionals, developers, academics and community members. City officials have expressed great interest in the students' work and have scheduled for the students to give a presentation in the City Council chamber in January 2014.
