3 OUR SUCCESS 96.6% OF OUR LEVEL 3 STUDENTS PROGRESS TO FURTHER EDUCATION OR EMPLOYMENT* * Writtle Destination Survey Don t just take our word for it! 86.6% 85.2% 89.0% 82.4% 83.6% success rate for all ages of students at all levels, compared to a Landex average of 82.6% - placing us at 6th out of 33 institutions. success rate for 16 to 18-year-olds, compared to a Landex average of 80.1% - again ranking us at 6th. success rate at Level 3, against an average of 84.9% - putting us in 4th place! success rate at Level 2, against an average of 78.2%. success rate at Level 1, against an average of 77.7%. 4 PRESENTATION Every year, we host a presentation day for our students. Held at writtle village church, we celebrate their success in style! The presentation ceremonies are a proud day for us, as well as parents, families and friends, as we see students celebrate their achievements. After completing their studies many students move onto other further education courses or advance onto higher education and progress onto the next level of academic study, while others embark on fantastic careers. Whatever their next steps, our students are fully prepared to face their next challenge with the valuable skills and knowledge gained from their time with us. 4 CELEBRATE FURTHER EDUCATION 2015

6 6 1 AGRICULTURE 1. AGRICULTURE equipment specialist loans huge tractor to College! Agriculture students benefited from the use of a John Deere 7230 tractor, which P Tuckwell Ltd kindly loaned to the College. The equipment specialist also loaned a Gregoire Besson soils cultivation implement Epic fundraiser for Help for HerOES! Agriculture students raced Sports Lecturer Rich Brass on exercise bikes for 92 miles the equivalent distance from Writtle College to Sandhurst to raise nearly 1,000 for Help for Heroes. 6 CELEBRATE FURTHER EDUCATION 2015

Writtle College students finalists in national public speaking competition Agriculture students Will Riddleston, Elliott Smith and Charlie Apter were runners up in a national public speaking competition. The Level 3 Extended Diploma students reached the final of the Just a Minute under 21s public speaking competition which is run by the National Federation of Young Farmers Clubs. 4. Students scoop JCB awards Hannah Hensley was awarded the JCB Workwear Agricultural Student of the Year, whilst Sam Turnnidge received the runner-up prize at the 2015 Presentation Day Farm Minister recollects time at Writtle College Farm Minister George Eustice, who gave out awards at the 2015 Presentation Day, studied Commercial Horticulture at Writtle College between 1990 and 1993 and went into the family fruit farm for nine years before embarking on his political career. The Conservative MP for Camborne, Redruth and Hayle since May 2010, who was appointed Farm Minister last October, said: My learning at Writtle College has been very useful in my entire career, from running the family business to politics, and I still sometimes reference it. 6. Farm business sets students an assignment challenge EW Davies Farms Ltd set our Level 3 Agriculture students the task of writing an assignment on agrochemical programmes for a variety of crops. The students who produced the best assignments received prizes including Claas overalls, Fendt luggage bags and a tour of the New Holland Tractor Plant in Basildon or the JCB factory in Staffordshire. #WRITTLECELEBRATE 7
8 1 6 ANIMAL STUDIES, DOG GROOMING AND VETERINARY NURSING 1. students Went diving in the Red Sea Animal Studies students travelled to Egypt to go diving, relating the coral and fish biodiversity to their ecology and aquatics modules. They had to complete their PADI Open Water Scuba Diving Course in preparation for the trip. 2. Animal CARE STUDENT success at Crufts competition! A teenage Animal Care student has demonstrated her dog handling skills at Crufts in a national competition. Rae Bibb, 17, got through a gruelling qualifying process to reach the national final of the Young Kennel Club Handlers competition at Crufts She achieved fourth place in the 17 to 24 year-olds Working and Pastoral Handling Class. 3. Writtle College welcomes new additions The College welcomed two emus to the Titchmarsh Centre in The emus came from Jimmy s Farm and were hatched live on a Channel 4 documentary. 3 8 CELEBRATE FURTHER EDUCATION 2015
9 4. students construct runs for guinea pigs and rabbits Animal Studies students built the runs for Animal Science degree students during their Applied Animal Behaviour and Welfare practical, which involved personality testing the animals at the Titchmarsh Centre. 5. Dog Grooming business highly commended at national awards A dog grooming business which employs Writtle College Apprentices was highly commended at two major award ceremonies! 5 Ilford-based Pawfect achieved a highly commended award in the Apprenticeship 4 England Employer Awards It comes after the micro-business was highly commended in the National Apprenticeships Awards 2014, which it went through to after winning the regional final. Paw-fect employs Writtle College Apprentices 20-year-old Kirsty Leeder, an Advanced Apprentice; and 19-year-old Carla Garey students went on an incredible trip to South Africa to explore its wide diversity of species Animal Studies students spent three days camping in Kruger National Park, looking out for the big five game animals. They visited the Moholoholo wildlife rehabilitation centre and exotic centre, where the students got to see what goes on behind the scenes and explored its wide diversity of species. They heard the stories of how some of the animals ended up at the centre and how they have been released back into the wild. The trip also gave the students the chance to visit an elephant sanctuary. They could get close up to the elephants, learn about these fascinating animals, feed them and take them to the water hole. #WRITTLECELEBRATE 9
10 1 1 1 ART & DESIGN 1. Art Exhibition success From a textile seascape to magazine covers exploring body image, the art, design and photography students used a variety of artistic methods to showcase their work at their stunning end of year exhibition CELEBRATE FURTHER EDUCATION 2015

Art and Design students study tour Art and Design students went on a study tour to the Tate Modern (Richard Hamilton Exhibition) and the Barbican (Jean Paul Gautier Exhibition) as part of their Extended Diploma course, to gain inspiration for their own work ROYAL ACADEMy drawing workshop for Art students! The Royal Academy s Life Drawing workshop came to the College s Turner Building to work with second year students. The Royal Academy tutor brought a model along for the day and the students experienced a focused approach to large scale drawing in charcoal, which will be an excellent addition to their portfolios. 2. Students take a cultural tour of London s top museums First year Extended Diploma and Foundation Diploma Art and Design students visited the V&A to see the Alexander McQueen fashion exhibition and the Natural History Museum to see the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition. #WRITTLECELEBRATE 11
12 2 2 COUNTRYSIDE 1. STUDENTS lay a hedgerow in local church Grounds A group of students laid a hedge at the back of Fryerning Church, which will be an on-going task over the next couple of winters to improve its wildlife value STUDENTS get hands-on with Stihl Countryside students were able to hear about the range of latest equipment provided by machinery suppliers, Stihl, when the industry giant visited the Writtle campus. 12 CELEBRATE FURTHER EDUCATION 2015
13 3. students help with gorse management Level 3 Countryside Management students helped with gorse management at the National Trust heathland site at Danbury Common. 4. Countryside students revamp park area Students recently transplanted sections of reedbed at Marsh Farm Country Park to create a new habitat Students help repair parkland The Level 2 Countryside and Environment students helped restore grassland at Thorndon Country Park by removing birch saplings. The area will be grazed later this year by Red Poll cattle. 5 #WRITTLECELEBRATE 13
14 4 EQUINE 1. Foals born at Writtle College s LORDSHIPS Stud named after birds! Five foals were born at Writtle College s Lordships Stud in The theme for the names of the foals was put to the student vote with famous sports people and Shakespeare characters among the options. However bird names won the overall vote, with the likes of Emu, Lori (Lorikeet) and Woody (Woodpecker) being selected Sport horses of the future identified at Writtle College! The sport horses and ponies of the future were identified at an evaluation event at Writtle College s Cow Watering Campus. The British Equestrian Federation s (BEF) Futurity Evaluation for young horses and ponies was held at the College in the Summer The College s Lordships Stud had a strong presence again this year, presenting four of its own foals as well as enjoying strong links with a number of other high-scoring participants. 14 CELEBRATE FURTHER EDUCATION 2015

LORDSHIPS Stud welcomes horses from World Horse Welfare charity Writtle College received two horses, called Mrs Potts and her foal Jodhi, from World Horse Welfare (WHW) one of the biggest charitable welfare organisations in the UK. These horses came in addition to two previous horses received from the welfare charity EqUINE apprenticeship success Equine apprentices Hannah White & Hannah Cozens qualified for the Trailblazers Championships on 10th May 2015! Hannah Cozens qualified for 75cm on a college loan horse called Minty and Hannah White qualified in the 85cm and 95cm classes Foal was star attraction of LORDSHIPS Stud Open DAY The day included activities, demonstrations with stallions and youngstock in the outdoor school, as well as stalls and children s activities. There was also the opportunity to find out more about the exciting equine courses on offer at the College. The event was free but raised money for The National Foaling Bank. #WRITTLECELEBRATE 15
16 1 FLORISTRY 1. Students and STAFf are triumphant at Hampton COURT Flower Show 2015 A team of Writtle College students and staff were presented with a Silver Gilt award for their Mary Poppins themed display at the Hampton Court Flower Show. 2. Writtle College student wins floristry challenge on The Alan Titchmarsh Show! A Writtle College Further Education student appeared on The Alan Titchmarsh Show and won a floristry challenge! Sophie Jones, who studied a Level 3 Floristry course, contacted the show after they tweeted that they were looking for people to take part in a floristry demonstration. Sophie answered the call and she was invited to the ITV studios in South Bank, London. Along with two other contestants, she was given 30 minutes in the floristry fisticuffs to create an Autumnal arrangement, with celebrity florist Simon Lycett judging the competition for Alan who is the Writtle College patron. Sophie, from Brentwood, said: I was really nervous but I think the arrangement went very well and I m really proud of it. It was a great experience CELEBRATE FURTHER EDUCATION 2015

Inspiring trip to Holland Students enjoyed a study tour to Holland, visiting Aalsmeer Flower Market, rose and orchid growers, floristry wholesalers and a workshop with a Dutch master floral designer Chelmsford City Mayor tours floristry facilities The Mayor, Councillor Paul Hutchinson, was shown a floristry demonstration by students and a preview of the exhibit for RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show, whilst on a tour of Writtle College Floristry lecturer visits Japan Helen Sheard gave floral demonstrations at Nagoya Wedding Flower and Beauty Academy in Nagoya, with graduate Miyeong Jeon, who is from South Korea but now works in Japan. #WRITTLECELEBRATE 17
18 1 1 HORTICULTURE: GARDENING & 1 LANDSCAPING 1. Best in Show, gold and PEOPLE s Choice for Writtle College! Writtle College won the People s Choice award in the Young Gardeners of the Year competition, chosen by visitors to the Ideal Home Show The award means that the College s team scooped all three of the top honours in the competition Best in Show, Gold and People s Choice. 18 CELEBRATE FURTHER EDUCATION 2015

Writtle College student Sam Moore reached the national final having won the regional final of the Young Horticulturist of the Year competition! Sam, who completed a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Horticulture, went on to compete in the Grand Final at the National Trust s Barrington Court, Somerset, with only seven other finalists from across the UK students create pond and outdoors classroom at primary school Level 3 Horticulture students designed and built the outside classroom and pond at Kings Road Primary School, Chelmsford, which pupils will use for pond-dipping and lessons about nature. #WRITTLECELEBRATE 19
20 2 1 SPORT 1 1. Outdoor Adventure students participate in 125 mile canoe race Level 3 Extended Diploma students finished 4th in a 125 mile canoe race from Devizes to Westminster! In the K2s category (two man boats), the juniors completed the race over four days. 80 boats entered the junior class with 70 of these being school / college entries and 10 higher level crews from canoe clubs. 2. Sport students involved in Cross Country Championships Level 3 Outdoor Adventure students marshalled for the Essex Schools Cross Country Championships at Hylands Park. 3. Outdoor Adventure students go on overnight trek and camp Level 3 Extended National Diploma in Sport (Outdoor Adventure) students undertook an overnight trekking and camping expedition to Deal in Kent, walking approximately 20km and camping overnight on the white cliffs of Dover! 20 CELEBRATE FURTHER EDUCATION 2015
21 Keith Moule flying high Keith Moule, Head of FE Sport, competed for GB in the canoe marathon world championships in Oklahoma City, USA, and came seventh in the K1 so he is now seventh in the world and first in Great Britain! Keith is pictured at the 1,000m Canoe Sprint in the World Cup 2014 in Racice in the Czech Republic students help organise a workshop for primary schoolchildren with a talent for sport Level 2 Diploma in Sport students worked with Chelmsford School Sport Partnership to organise Little Stars, a camp for gifted and talented year two pupils from schools in Chelmsford. They ran sessions on rugby, golf, squash, tennis and agility. #WRITTLECELEBRATE 21
22 APPRENTICESHIPS 1. Record number of ApprentiCES With a strong focus and continuous commitment to supporting the future of the land-based sector, Writtle College has generated a record number of new Apprentices this year. The College is on target to hit 200 Apprentices in training during 2014/2015. Writtle College offers Apprenticeships in Agriculture, Animal Care (including Dog Grooming), Environmental Conservation, Equine Studies, Floristry, Horticulture and Veterinary Nursing. 2.
