2 Big City Plan The Big City Plan is a comprehensive city centre masterplan which aims to revitalise the city and make Birmingham a world class destination over the next two decades. ST GEORGE AND ST CHAD HS2 Phase 1 of HS2 will run from London Euston to Curzon Street, Birmingham. This high speed rail link will have a huge impact on the city and its urban form. The station and railway line itself will have a transformational effect on the area around Eastside and the Knowledge Hub. JEWELLERY QUARTER SNOW HILL STATION EASTSIDE ST PHILIP S CATHEDRAL AND COLMORE ROW Curzon Street Masterplan aims to capitalise on the arrival of HS2 and fully integrate the station into its surroundings in Eastside, Digbeth and the city core. Snow Hill Masterplan The Snow Hill Masterplan is an identified area of transformation which aims to reconfigure Snow Hill Station, extend the office core and enhance the public realm. Development proposals Within the study area, there are many other future and ongoing developments. These include Eastside Locks; Masshouse; Birmingham Conservatoire, Typhoo Wharf, and Aston Science Park. 4 THE OPPORTUNITY The creation of a coherent masterplan which involves a test bed for a number of projects that will transform the area through new development proposals, the creation of high quality public spaces, and the opportunity to encourage social and economic exchange. 15 ASTON CENTRAL SQUARE The key design features include: A new meeting space that gives pedestrians and cyclists priority over other users A new multi functional pavilion with information point and café Access to digital and wayfinding information Protection of existing and provision of new street trees Recharging point for electric pod for use within the Knowledge Hub campus Cycle store New lighting plinths to define new space to coordinate with those found at Millennium Point New taxi drop off point Potential new entrance to Aston University with new building and entrance plaza

17 JENNENS PARK The key design features include: Reducing the width of the carriageway from four lanes to two Utilising the former carriageway for a linear park with a focus on health and wellbeing Creating new pedestrian routes based on desire lines Providing a series of pavilions that will activate the space Provision of opportunities to get fit through play and the use of fitness trails Providing a positive new entrance to the Conservatoire and other buildings along the route Providing connection through to Millennium Point Providing healthy places to eat and cycle changing facilities

19 CINEMA SQUARE The key design features include: Creation of a multi-purpose space that can be used both in the day and at night A new improved bridge line from the Conservatoire to the central square A digital screen for art and film New lighting that helps tie the square with other key interventions within the Knowledge Hub A place where students and others can exhibit and sell their work New paving and lighting that draws you through to Eastside Park

21 CURZON STREET The key design features include: Curzon Street will be downgraded and priority given to pedestrians and cyclists Active uses at ground floor onto Curzon Street to create vitality The provision of pavilions will provide opportunities for enterprise and meeting places Good links to be provided along New Canal Street to link with Digbeth s Creative Quarter Integration with the new tram and entrance square to the new HS2 station

23 EASTSIDE LOCKS The key design features include: Canal front development A land use mix including residential, student accommodation and other commercial uses Protection of key buildings and heritage assets including the canal keeper s cottage The opportunity to access different modes of transport A key hub of activity on the new digital towpath The creation of art and lighting installation to enliven the tunnels and key spaces along the canal

25 TYPHOO WHARF The key design features include: The reuse of historic buildings on the former wharf site A mix of uses to create activity at different times of the day Opportunities for learning and entrepreneurship Greater access to the water s edge and along the canal High quality public space with bars, restaurants and active uses at ground floor A new internal atrium through former Typhoo Wharf building to provide an improved link from Bordesley Street to the canal Integration of new tram stop alongside public realm improvements
