3 The Seascape, June 2011 Page 3 President s Message Andrew Tuckman, President, andrew.tuckman@visionrecycling.com Are we almost half-way through the year already? And just when we thought winter was over, Mother Nature dropped more rain on us, with hail, in the middle of May. Here in Bonny Doon, at 2000 feet, young plants had to come indoors and work days got cut short with the horrible weather. But we just have to make the best of it and love the free water from the sky, as it is much needed for our environment. The Beautification Awards Banquet, scheduled for June 17th, is almost upon us. Thanks to those contractors who submitted entries and for taking the time to do it. Despite numerous last minute packets dropped off at Ewing Irrigation, we managed to receive 29 entries from 13 different companies. WAY TO GO! I am so impressed by the participation and energy from the member base during a tough economy and busy schedule. Our C-27 s rallied and came through in the final hour. The board of directors and chair person Regan Barry are thankful and grateful for your cooperation and enthusiasm. June 17th is going to be one special evening so mark your calendars and reserve your spot. In the last month we had two events that provided useful information, brought members together and showed that our central coast chapter is alive and well. On April 26th the chapter met at Phil s Fish Market & Restaurant for a social mixer and Beautification Awards entry drop off point. Dennis Rabe joined us as the surprise guest and it was great to see his smiling face. We enjoyed appetizers like seafood sliders, award winning crab cakes and listened to bluegrass music in the atrium. Then, on May 4th, we had an educational dinner at the new Ecology Action Headquarters in Santa Cruz, continued on page 9

4 Page 4 The Seascape, June 2011 Water-Smart Gardening Is Here! Vai Campbell, Soquel Creek Water District, vaidehic@soquelcreekwater.org At the last chapter meeting presentations focused on water-smart gardening. I joined Michael Johnson of California H2orticulture Services and the City of Watsonville Water Conservation Department and Sherry Lee Bryan from Ecology Action to speak about ongoing, new and upcoming water-smart gardening rules, programs and resources. New web resources If you have a client who doesn t know what plants they want, or you want to find the right plants for specific requests and print out a list to bring to the nursery, check out the Water-Smart Gardening in Santa Cruz County, a website of waterwise gardens and plants for Santa Cruz County. From the Water Conservation Coalition of Santa Cruz County s website, click on the blue square with the Douglas Iris photo. For the Monterey County area, go to monterey.php. The website s plant search tool makes it easy to choose plants that have low to medium water needs. The website also has inspiring photos of local watersmart gardens, some designed by CLCA members. This gardening resource is a collaborative project of the Water Conservation Coalition of Santa Cruz County which includes the City of Santa Cruz, the City of Watsonville, Soquel Creek Water District, San Lorenzo Valley Water District, and Scotts Valley Water District. The Monterey County website was a collaborative project of the Monterey Water Awareness Committee. Their website is This is an ongoing project that has room for improvement. If you see an error or missing information (such as garden designer) that should be included, please provide text and specific instructions where in the site the information was found. Send your comments to Aerin Martin at the City of Santa Cruz aemartin@cityofsantacruz.com or to Vai Campbell at Soquel Creek Water District vaidehic@soquelcreekwater.org or call The Monterey County continued on page 6

6 Page 6 The Seascape, June 2011 Water-Smart Gardening cont d site can receive feedback by calling their Water Hotline (831) Thank you for your review and input to make the site even better. Rules Existing properties All water agencies in Santa Cruz County are concerned about water waste from landscapes and most have ordinances to back this up. The Soquel Creek Water District, the City of Watsonville and the City of Santa Cruz have water waste prohibitions in place that can lead to fines, water shut-off or doubled water rates (depending on the agency). If you notice extensive irrigation run-off or irrigation leaks, please correct if on your property, or record a complaint with the water purveyor if you notice water waste on someone else s property. www. watersavingtips.org has links to all the water agencies. New Development If you re working on new landscape design for a new development (residential or commercial) you need to know about the requirements in the California Water Conservation in Landscaping Act, also known as the State Landscape Model Ordinance ( Model Ordinance ). The California Water Conservation in Landscaping Act was amended pursuant to AB 2717 (Chapter 682, Stats. 2004) and AB 1881 (Chapter 559, Stats. 2006). By January 1, 2010, AB 1881 requires that all cities and counties adopt the updated Model Ordinance (MO), or Adopt a different ordinance that is at least as effective in conserving water as the updated MO, or if a local agency takes no action, the updated MO will go into effect as if it were adopted and shall have the same force and effect as if adopted by the local agency. The local cities, counties and water agencies have either adopted the state ordinance or have adopted a different ordinance that is at least as effective in conserving water as the state ordinance. So, for new construction or expanded water service projects, the development must follow the updated rules about landscape water use efficiency. In Santa Cruz County, the local water purveyors who have adopted their own version of the ordinance are; Soquel Creek Water District, the City of Santa Cruz and the City of Watsonville (they are in the process of adoption). See for links to the different agencies and their specific rules.

7 The Seascape, June 2011 Page 7 Shade Loving, Drought Tolerant Native Plants by Jerry Allison, Jerry Allison Landscaping Have you ever wondered what to plant under those oak trees or the established redwoods or any other large established shade tree that can tolerate little water? It is relatively easy to come up with drought tolerant plants in full sun, just choose a chaparral plant community and you re set. How do you deal with the shady areas where you want lush plantings yet you want them to fit into your drought tolerant watering regimen? We are blessed to have great natural models from which to gain inspiration in our local parks. No one waters the plants you find growing under the canopies of oaks, firs and redwoods and you can learn so much by merely observing what is growing there all by itself. We are also blessed with the nurseries that grow the very same plants that thrive in this community. So, if you are in a situation where you want to plant under an established oak tree or on a shady hillside where you want to keep supplemental water use to a minimum, here is a good combination that is useful and attractive and can be expanded to fit the scale of your situation. This can be used in a space as small as 5 feet by 5 feet to as large as 100 square feet. You could go to Nisene Marks or to Big Basin and study what works there and apply it to your landscape situation. Low water use lush native plants sound like an oxymoron but they are a fact in nature. I usually look for a plant that is the foundation for an area and elaborate from there. It is a lot like cooking with a recipe of ingredients, the result of which can taste different every time but is always good. Here is a list of plants that I have found work well together in shade: Huechera gigantean (coral bells), Carex tumulicola or Carex pansa (sedge) Polystichum minutum (sword fern) Fragaria chiloensis (ornamental strawberry) and vaccinium ovatum (huckleberry). You can throw in Iris douglasiana, redwood sorrel and Woodwardia if you have enough space. If you keep it simple and use those plants that would all naturally grow together anyway you really can t go wrong. Take a difficult situation (low water supply in a shady environment) as an opportunity to replicate a beautiful native setting. It is an opportunity to recreate a special place for homeowners to enjoy every day. Now go out there and find your own plant combination that you would like to replicate when the opportunity arrives and use it. IRRIGATION SUPPLY, INC. Representatives from the local water districts spoke about current water regulations and ecological landscape practices. Dinner from Five Star Catering provided a great meal and balanced out the evening. Check out the update from Vai Campbell in this month s newsletter.
