18 Guide to calculate required thermal power Considering that the salesman should give the customer a choice of SAL heaters, his personal experience is very important. You will find here below an empirical formula to calculate the needed thermal power. Thermal power = V x t x K V t K volume of area to be heated (surface area x height) in m 3 difference between the outside temperature and the desired inside temperature (in C) dispersion coefficient K = 3,0-4,0 K = 2,0-2,9 K = 1,0-1,9 K = 0,6-0,9 NON NSULATD A simple building in wood or in corrugated metal. BADLY NSULATD Building with poor insulation, with singlebrick walls, with windows or glass door and with a clear roof. MODRATLY NSULATD Thick walls, insulated roof and few windows. WLL NSULATD Double-glazed, few windows, thick insulated walls. Floor, roof and doors are well insulated C +18 C xample To heat a building site cabin: K = 4 Height 3 m Width 4 m Length 12 m Volume V = 144 m 3 Outside temperature = -5 C nside temperature required = +18 C t = +23 C K = 4,0 (Non insulated) 144 m 3 f we apply the formula, we obtain: Power = 144 x 23 x 4 = kcal/h. Obviously before purchasing a specific heater, the required thermal heat output has to be calculated.
