We are off to a roaring start for 2018 with several major fund raising events scheduled in the near future. February s Meeting Speaker Volunteer Opportunities 3-6 Facebook 7 Movies in our Library 8 Wandering Gardener 9-10 Christmas Social Photos 11 January Meeting Photos Annual Awards Spring Plant Sale 18 Garden & Craft Fair 19 Continuing Education Volunteer Recognition Membership Information 24 Calendar of Events Members in Service 27 2 First up will be the South Texas Home, Garden & Environmental Show in Floresville on March 3 & 4. In addition to our normal efforts at providing volunteers for the show, the Guadalupe County Master Gardeners will have a booth we are calling Pepper Mania. The plan is to sell a variety of pepper plants as our first fund raiser for the year. This effort is spear headed by Cynthia Lyssy and Jerry McNulty. If you plan to raise peppers for the booth, please contact either Cynthia or Jerry. The following Saturday, March 17 will be our annual plant sale. Should the weather not cooperate the sale will be held on Saturday, March 24. Last year we did really well in the Silver Center parking lot in Seguin, so we will be returning there. The focus will be on vegetables but ornamentals also sell well. Please plan on raising transplants and/or helping the day of the sale. Saturday, April 7 will be the Guadalupe County Community Garden & Craft Fair. This event has been held in the fall in the past but has been moved to this spring. More information will be made available as plans progress. Please contact Mary Bowe with any questions. Last but not least will be Earth Day on Saturday, April 28 at Central Park in Seguin. This event will include not only a plant sale, but children s activities and an information booth to provide the public information about gardening. It s always a lot of fun! As well as these fund raisers, all of our normal projects/gardens are getting geared up for spring planting and activities. Thanks to all of you for your continuing commitment to making GCMG the outstanding gardening organization that it is. Happy Gardening Kay McElveen 1

At Home Volunteer Opportunities Every year we have members who want to remain with the Guadalupe County Master Gardeners, but have problems earning their volunteer hours due to their work schedule, caring for an ill family member, or health reasons of their own. This list is not all inclusive. There may be other reasons why you have problems earning volunteer hours. We are putting together a list of people who need at home opportunities. The board will use this list to identify volunteers for various projects that lend themselves to at home work as well as sharing it with volunteer project leaders for other at home opportunities. If you would like to be placed on this list, please send me an at hkaymcelveen@gmail.com Let me know if you have computer skills such as word, excel, and/or power point or if you have limitations regarding what you can do. We hope this effort will allow all of our members to meet their volunteer hour requirements. Kay McElveen Possible Additional MG office hours There has been some discussion by the Board about the possibility of having the Master Gardener office open on a regular basis for more than just Monday mornings from 9:00 - noon. It would make the facility more available to members, add addition hours to responding to public phone inquiries and additional volunteer time available to members doing office work and supporting projects. To make this happen we need a member(s) to volunteer to be responsible for those additional hours. The specific day/time would be that Master Gardener s choice but it would need to be a long term, specific commitment. If anyone is interested in doing this. please contact me. If we have more than one Master Gardener volunteer we will negotiate about what is workable. Kay McElveen hkaymcelveen@gmail.com

Additional Volunteer Opportunities Seguin Artsfest In 2017, we had a children's activity booth at the Seguin Artsfest. The Seguin Arts Commission has contacted us to see if you are interested in doing that again this year. The event will be on Saturday, March 3 in Seguin and we are looking for someone (or multiple someones) to organize and man the booth. This is a great opportunity to have some fun with the kids and get visibility with the public. Please contact me if you are interested. Kay McElveen hkaymcelveen@gmail.com C: A butterfly garden in Schlather Park in Cibolo At the December Board meeting the Board approved an exciting new volunteer opportunity. One of our Master Gardeners, Kathy Carroll, is working with the city of Cibolo to develop a butterfly garden in Schlather Park. This project is just in the planning stages, so anyone who is interested in the planning and development of butterfly gardens has a great opportunity to get in on the ground floor. If you would like to work on this project contact Kathy Carroll kathleencarroll@icloud.com The South Texas Home, Garden and Environmental Show The show will be held on March 3rd & 4th at the Floresville Event Center. This event is free to the public. GCMG will be having a booth selling our "Pepper" plants. There are many volunteer opportunities at this event. We will need volunteers to assist with our Pepper plant sales. Dr. Finch has requested GCMG assistance in registration with data collection, handing out free plants, Sunday's landscape school, and miscellaneous. To sign up to volunteer, Cynthia Lyssy at cmlyssy@prodigy.net or text

SEEKING A MASTER GARDENER Let me introduce myself, I am informally known as bed 8 at the Gutierrez Xeriscape Park. I have a Grandma s Yellow Rose and Several Dwarf Mexican Petunias (purple) or Ruellia planted. In the spring some Mexican Bush Sage will be joining us. I am seeking a Master Gardener or two to adopt me to care for the plants, weed and water as needed. The Master Gardener must have the initiative to research the plants in the bed for the best care and maintenance. They must be able to work on their own or with a partner, but ask for guidance when needed. The Rose bush needs some special care and pruning techniques. When deadheading you cannot just cut off the flowers any ol way. There is something to do with counting leaves and cutting at an angle, what do I know I m just a planting bed. Please consult references or someone who can assist you. A Rosarian perhaps? YouTube has some videos. Adoption arrangements can be made through Kim Darrough or Judy Stanley. Contact Kim at kimdarr70855@yahoo.com or cell: Contact Judy at jstanley20@satx.rr.com 6

Now that the holidays are over and we ve survived the first hard freezes of winter the members of the Guadalupe County Master Gardener's FB group, now 161 strong, are looking ahead and sharing their successes. In the last month members have posted photos of some of the wonderful plants they re growing for the upcoming MG spring events. Everyone seems excited with their seed sowing efforts, this should translate into some great fund raising for future educational activities. Peppers are the plant of the day and from the photos it looks like shoppers will have lots to choose from at the plant sales. Jerry McNulty, Kim Tessanne, and April Rippel have posted pictures of our peppers (say that 3 times fast...) and we d love to see what you ve got growing. Kim & Jerry also shared some great ideas for your seedlings and hopefully everyone will pull out their seeds and get started! If you have questions or problems with your seedlings and/or transplants, you can ask for advice on FB, there are some fantastic Master Gardener members with all sorts of helpful hints. Photos were also posted from our most recent Master Gardener meeting on January 18 th. Volunteers were awarded, long time members were acknowledged, and graduates of Class 30 were applauded, what an inspiring night! As always, event reminders such as interesting continuing education seminars, volunteer opportunities, meetings, and lectures are posted to keep us all up to date on garden happenings, which makes it easy to plan and mark our calendars. You too can share your photos, ideas, comments, questions, events, and articles with us on Facebook, it s very easy to join. All you need to do is log into Facebook and in the search box type Guadalupe County Master Gardeners, the Group will show up, click on it and request to join, you are guaranteed to be approved. Still need help joining? Give me a call at (830) or me at adrippel@gmail.com and I d be happy to walk you through the procedure for joining the group or even how to create your new account for Facebook, all questions are welcome. To all the FB Group members, keep those photos, questions, links, and advice coming. We all enjoy the posts. Thank you all for sharing! April Rippel Class 27 7

Movies in our Library Cathy Kirk I am excited to let you know that we have DVDs in the Master Gardener Library available for checkout. Seed, The Untold Story A beautiful film about saving the future of our food by collecting seeds. We can all assist with this worldwide project. Many inspiring stories about preserving native seeds and growing nutritious foods are told. Some of us saw this at a monthly meeting, but it is well worth viewing again. Gardens of the World, with Audrey Hepburn A special 3 DVD tribute edition that includes additional footage not in the original series, plus 16 orchestral works from the soundtrack. There are 17 gardens in seven countries featured, fusing them with history, art, and literature. The Great Gardens of England Collection This is a 6 DVD set that tours 58 English gardens, everything from The Gardens of the National Trust to tiny private courtyards - six hours of gardens. Now that is binge watching at its finest! 8

Bryce National Park, Utah Marilyn Moltz The Wandering Gardener There are several national parks located in southern Utah and the smallest of these is Bryce. It is only 35,835 acres in size but contains the largest collection of hoodoos in the world. A hoodoo is a rock formation which resembles a totem pole. Some of the hoodoos here are 200 feet tall. I have been to the park in several different seasons and they take on a different look each time. Bryce National Park offers lots to do in addition to hoodoo viewing. The park has two campgrounds and one lodge if you want to stay more than a day. It offers hiking, off-road vehicle tours, stargazing, geological seminars and a scenic drive which has 13 viewing stops. The park s elevation varies from 2000 feet to 8000 feet. There are fir/spruce forests, pinyon/juniper forests, ponderosa pines, 100 species of birds, 10,000 plant species and dozens of mammals including black bear, elk and mountain lion. The park changes in color with a variety of wildflowers like paintbrush, penstemon, western iris, and columbine. Please add this national park to your list of those to visit when you go to southern Utah you won t be disappointed! 9

December Snow! Marilyn Moltz This past December we had a big surprise when it snowed. I had about 3 inches all over my property. We went outside when it began and just stood there and let the large, wet snowflakes fall on our heads. It snowed for over 2 hours. Of course, the photographer in me just had to set an early alarm and go out in the 25-degree weather to take pictures! These are a few of the 100+ I took. I hope you enjoyed the snow as much as we did. 10
