1 GUILD OF NATURAL SCIENCE ILLUSTRATORS Greater New York Chapter JUNE 2011 GNSI-GNY June Chapter Meeting Sunday, June 12, noon-3 p.m Annual Lunch (brown bag) on the High Line! The High Line in Manhattan, near 15th street. Join fellow GNSI-GNY s for simpatico company, food, drink (the soft kinds), great city views, and the generally super-groovy vibe at one of the masterpieces of urban landscape design, the High Line. We will meet, hang out some, and perhaps make some forays to explore the plantings, art and serendipity. Guests are welcome. We plan to stake out some territory at tables and chairs located just north of 15 th Street on the High Line. You may contact Valerie Storfer (valstorfer[at]gmail.com) for cell phone contacts in case of any last moment changes. Bring a brown bag lunch from home or splurge on great food and coffee (albeit fancy prices) at street level at the Chelsea Market on 15th St. between 9th and 10th Avenues (budget $$ and calories for scrumptious gelato). Directions: Access by stairs or elevator at 16th Street & 10th Avenue or 14th Street & 10th Avenue. If entering from 16 th Street (walking south): walk through passageway (cut out in building). As you exit the south side of the passageway there are steps on your right (west), which go to lower level pathway. Take these steps and turn right onto the lower pathway, and the meeting place will be immediately ahead of you. If entering from 14 th Street (walking north): stay on the left (river) side of the walkway as it splits into two levels keep left onto the lower level. You will pass Phillips de Pury in the building on your right (east). The lower level of the path will take you directly to our meeting spot, just north of 15 th Street. GNSI-GNY 2011 Chapter Exhibit Nature s Medicine Chest Plants, Animals, Minerals The Greater New York Chapter of the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators in conjunction with Highstead Arboretum of Redding Connecticut, requests submissions from members for an exhibition to be held at the Highstead Arboretum from Saturday, September 10 through Saturday October 29, EXHIBIT ENTRY FORM IS ON PAGE 5 OF THIS NEWSLETTER. Scan deadline: Monday June 20, Please send not more than three 300dpi 5 x7 scans to dickrauh@aol.com or a CD to Dick Rauh, 245 Wilton Road, Westport CT Send a check for $10 payable to GNSI- Greater New York. Please include a short (150 words) bio or artist statement. In an exhibit of this kind a few words on the reasoning of your choice and particulars of the species depicted and their medicinal value will be of interest. As this is a GNSI chapter show make sure your membership is current. Jury: Dick Rauh, Kathie Miranda, and Holley Morgan-Porter who is doing her Post-Doctorate at the Institute of Economic Botany at the New York Botanical Garden. Framing: Simple wood or quality metal only. No clip metal frames accepted. White or off-white mat, and ready to hang with eyehooks and wire. Plexiglas is a must if you are shipping your artwork. Delivery: To Highstead or Dick by Tuesday September 6. Highstead hours are M-F 8am to 4 pm. Please call in advance so that someone is at the Barn to accept your artwork ( ). Artwork can be shipped to Highstead Arboretum, 127 Lonetown Road, Redding, CT Artwork shipped to the Arboretum packed in Styrofoam peanuts, and/or if the box is not a proper, reusable, shipping carton, it will not be accepted. Because volunteer transportation of the artwork between venues and storage requires a need to fit the pieces easily into cars, we are imposing a size restriction of 30 framed size, longest dimension, unless you are willing to make provisions yourself for all shipping. Reception: Saturday, September 10, time to be announced. Here are some suggestions for medicinal plants, but it is just scratching the surface. Black and blue cohash, bloodroot, echinacea, eyebright, ginseng, goldenseal, Oregon grape, osha, pink ladies slipper, spikenard, stoneroot, wild indigo and witch hazel are some possible healing herbs. Cone snail, leeches, honey bees, sea shells, coral, musk deer, codfish, and household pets are some members of the animal world whose whole, parts or secretions have therapeutic effects. If you want to paint minerals there are many with medicinal uses. The Plant Book by David Mabberley, lists medicinal uses for many species, or the Internet is an extraordinary source. Don t let your membership lapse!!! 3 G N S I G R E A T E R NEW YORK C H A P T E R JUNE 2011 Black-capped Chickadee, Susannah Graedel News of Members GNSI-GNY s 2010 Chapter Exhibit Songbirds of the Eastern United States Jan. 12-June 22, 2011 Class of 1954 Environmental Sciences Center, Yale University, Sachem Street, New Haven, CT The show will be taken down on June 23 and will be stored over the summer by Susan Brand in New Jersey. It will be exhibited at the Somerset County Environmental Education Center in Basking Ridge, New Jersey during September. Artists who want to keep their work over the summer will need to be at the Yale ESC on the 23rd to take it and then make their own arrangements to carry the work to New Jersey in time for the hanging at the end of August. Aija Sears and Judy Aronow have been selected to exhibit works in Birds, Bees, and Butterflies at the Lazarus Gallery of United Hebrew of New Rochelle, New York, May 20-September 9, CT Natural Science Illustrators, in collaboration with the Yale Peabody Museum, offers summer workshops in colored pencil, block printing, botanical oil painting and flower structure and a full schedule of fall classes taught by instructors Cindy Gilbane, Susannah Graedel, Dorie Petrochko and Jan Prentice. This exhibition by noted artist, writer and naturalist James Prosek features art drawn from field notes and watercolors made during a 2010 expedition sponsored by Yale's Peabody Museum of Natural History to the South American nation of Suriname. The exhibition consists of both paintings that Prosek made in the field and also work done in his Connecticut studio based on sketches, journals and photographs. In these works, the subjects are intentionally distorted to express humankind's inevitable distortion when defining or representing nature.
