1 South African Maritime Safety Authority Ref: SM6/5/2/1 SM12/8/8/3/P Date: 8 September 2017 Marine Notice No. 17 of 2017 Code of Practice for Marine Fire Service Stations Approved SAMFAS Stations TO SAMFAS SERVICE STATIONS, SHIP OPERATORS, MASTERS, SHIPS AGENTS AND PRINCIPAL OFFICERS Marine Notice No. 5 of 2017 is cancelled Summary This marine notice lists the approved marine fire service (SAMFAS) stations as at 01 st September Regulation 118(3) of the Life-Saving Equipment Regulations, 1968, requires all firefighting appliances installed on South African ships to be serviced at intervals not exceeding 12 months by a SAMSA-approved marine fire service station. 2 SAMSA, has amended the South African Maritime Code of Practice for Marine Fire Service Stations (SAMFAS Code), which was initially prepared in collaboration with the industry as the Code of Practice for Marine Fire Service Stations (DOTFAS Code). The code sets out the standards for the servicing of firefighting appliances; these standards satisfy the requirements of the applicable regulations. 3 A firefighting appliance that has been serviced and certified by a marine fire service station approved in terms of the SAMFAS Code will be accepted as having met the requirements of Regulation 118(3). 4 The Annex lists the approved marine fire service stations (SAMFAS stations). 5 At the time of publication of this marine notice, some marine firefighting service stations are close to the date of expiry of their approval, the onus to renew is left to the service providers. It has been noted that some crafts/boats are operating on inland water areas where the service stations may not be SAMSA approved; such service stations are still expected to be SABS approved and are urged to register with SAMSA.
