1 540 Newsletter August West Madison Awarded Prestigious LEED Platinum & BOMA 360 Performance Building Designation On April 10, 2014, 540 West Madison was awarded LEED Platinum Green Building Certification. The LEED rating system, developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), is the foremost program for buildings, homes and communities that are designed, constructed, maintained and operated for improved environmental and human health performance. 540 West Madison implemented a wide range of energy efficient strategies involving water conservation and sustainable operations as part of the certification process. Throughout everyday business operations, 540 West Madison strives to reduce its environmental impact by effectively managing the use of natural resources. The building continues to implement a green cleaning policy so that purchases of green cleaning chemicals and paper products meet Green Seal or EcoLogo standards. As part of the LEED certification process, 540 West Madison also earned the ENERGY STAR Label for superior energy performance. ENERGY STAR is a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency voluntary program that helps businesses and individuals save money and protect our climate through superior energy efficiency. In addition to achieving LEED Platinum, 540 West Madison was recently designated as a BOMA 360 Performance Building by the Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) International. The BOMA 360 Performance Program validates and recognizes commercial properties that demonstrate best practices in building operations and management. That means our building has been measured against current industry best practices and achieved thirdparty verification of excellence in six categories. Tenants nibbled upon various dishes from Chicago top restaurants such as Saigon Sisters, Porkchop and Wishbone. Proceeds were collected on behalf of the Greater Food Depository, a nonprofit food distribution and training center that provides food for hungry people while striving to end hunger in our community. 4 540 West Madison Illuminates Space with Glass Art Sculptures by Lasvit Combining traditional Bohemian glass making with innovative design and technology, Lasvit has created beautiful glass art installations for 540 West Madison. The dominant features of the Lobby and Mezzanine are two impressive glass art sculptures going by the name of Light Twister and coming from the pen of Lasvit s in-house designer Libor Sošťák. His designs were inspired by dynamic movement symbolizing growth and rapid development. Based in the Czech Republic, Lasvit s glass and lighting projects represent the artistry and centuries-old tradition of Czech glassmaking. Lasvit designer Libor Sošták fully respected all ideas of the interior designer and has developed elegant and expansive glass art sculptures that delightfully accompany the whole interior. Glass art installations

5 were manufactured by Lasvit in the Czech Republic and perfectly transform glass into spectacular, emotive lighting experiences bringing life to light and light to life. The Light Twister installations are created from hand-blown organic crystal elements, which use a variety of artistic techniques. Each of the artistic glass sculptures is created from more than 2000 hand-blown components in various shades of blue in combination with clear with touch of opal. To empower the impression of dynamic movement, lighting elements were placed inside certain components. Overall the glass art sculptures reach impressive dimensions: the sculpture on the Mezzanine has dimensions of 94 feet in length and 16.5 feet in width; the sculpture in the lobby has a height of 30 feet and a width of almost 18 feet. The installations breathe life into the atmosphere of the lobby, and at the same time creatively inspire all who work here. 6 Meet Mike Ruhl Mike Ruhl is 540 West Madison s new Chief Engineer. Mike comes to us from the Fairmont Chicago where he was the Director of Engineering, completing numerous energy savings projects as well as overseeing the build out and renovation of guest amenities. When Mike isn t working hard on projects at 540, he can be found on Lake Michigan reeling in prizeworthy smallmouth bass and competing to be the top angler in Chicago. 8 540 Sand Art Goes Viral Last year, 540 West Madison welcomed artist, Joe Mangrum to produce an installation of sand art in the lower lobby. Mangrum s sand paintings act as vibrant catalyst in social interactions and has now gone viral. Mangrum s work has been exhibited worldwide, in cities such as, New York, San Francisco, and Beijing. Creating over 650 public sand paintings since Mangrum is a graduate of the Art Institute of Chicago where he received a Bachelor s of Fine Arts.
