3 Hotel Information: The staff at the Radisson Stapleton Plaza have been great to work with. For starters the rooms are only $69.00 per night. 6 Class descriptions: Thursday, April 28, :30am 5:30pm Fundamentals of Locksmithing (3 days) Instructor: James Hancock, CPL This is a comprehensive hands-on course in Fundamental Locksmithing Techniques. The student will develop the ability to identify common key blanks, adjust key cutting equipment, use key duplicating and code cutting equipment, disassemble, service and originate keys for common lock cylinders using methods such as shimming, picking, impressioning and code cutting. Lockset servicing, functions and finishes will also be covered. Automotive Key Generation Instructor: Ed Woods CPL,CPS Making car keys doesn t have to be hard! Learn the methods and techniques needed to create new and duplicate keys for the latest domestic and import vehicles. Discover backdoors and shortcuts for faster, easier key generation. See tools demonstrated that make each job a snap. For Locksmiths with beginning to medium experience. Safe Deposit Lock Servicing (PRP) Instructor: Charles Stephenson, CPS Safe Deposit locks are not only found in banks but on drop safes and in hotels. This class will give the student a hands-on experience with three of the most popular safe deposit locks in today s market; the S&G 4400 Series, Diebold 175 Series and Mosler 5700 Series. The basic design and functions of these locks are found in most of the safe deposit locks of years past and will lead the student to understanding and mastering this profitable field. Materials to bring to class: A pencil and paper. PRP Study Applications: PRP Section L-25. ALOA members who pay the additional lab fee for the test may take PRP Section L-25 at the end of the class. Essential Sales Training (EST) (Day one of two) Audience: Industry sales representatives Instructor: Robert W. Larson This course provides strategies to boost productivity, increase customer satisfaction and maximize territory coverage. Learn the essentials of successful sales techniques including: prospecting, identifying customer needs and closing the deal. This course will end with the administration of an 80-minute, multiple-choice examination. Attendees successfully completing the examination will receive a certificate of course completion.
7 Friday, April 29, am 5pm Fundamentals of Locksmithing (day two of three) Transponders, the Complete Story Instructor: Ed Woods CPL,CPS There is no need to lose money! Get the latest on servicing transponder-equipped vehicles. The instructor presents a close up look at the cars using transponder keys, the procedures necessary to generate and duplicate keys for these vehicles, as well as tools (old & new) available for opening this market to the locksmith. Plus, add more to your bottom line by learning how to program remote keyless entry systems for these cars. Weather and vehicles permitting, a hands-on demonstration for programming GM, Ford and Chrysler transponder keys will be a performed at the announced location. Comprehensive Safe Servicing, Opening & Defeat Methods Instructor: Dennis Watanabe, CMST, CML This is not a beginning class. Although this class is designed as a review to prepare participants for the STPRP certification tests, it is an excellent overview of the wide range of topics related to safes and safe locks. Students will participate in a day of fast paced instruction and hands-on training, covering basic and advanced, theory and operation of safes and safe locks. Safe and safe lock construction, ratings, container classifications, servicing and defeat methods are just some of the subjects covered in class. Students will also learn; the proper way to scope a change key hole, lock defeat methods, drill point options, how to pull various dials, lock handing, safe door handing, lock-out diagnostics, the correct way to drill and transfer and much more. Note: There is a $ lab fee required for the class text (The 320 page Safe Technicians Reference Manual by Mike Oehlert, CPS, CPL) which is retained by the students. Students must have a copy of this text for use during class. Essential Sales Training (EST) (Day two of two) Evening Clinics for Friday 6pm to 9pm False Dispatch Reduction Training Instructors: Robert W. Larson & John S. Engs This Four-hour course was developed locally by Robert Larson, Mike Thul and John Holder. The Course deals with the issue of false dispatches and how we as alarm dealers and monitoring companies can successfully reduce their occurrence by 25 45%. 8 Saturday April 30, am 5pm Fundamentals of Locksmithing (day two of three) Your Bottom Line Instructor: Mark Blum, CML, CPS Tired of working for too little? This class presents some ideas to help raise your bottom Line, allowing you to work smarter not harder. Learn the secrets of how to determine what your charges are going to be and how to force profitability into your locksmith business. Materials to bring a calculator, pencil, and eraser. All the rest of what you need will be provided. Basic Safe Penetration Instructor: Charles Stephenson, CPS This class will prepare the student to add safe opening to their portfolio of services. The day is spent with lecture in the morning on topics such as preparation, planning, tools, techniques and resources. In the afternoon the students will form work groups and experience safe penetration as a hands-on opportunity. The student will plan their opening and then execute their plan. This basic class allows the student to make notes, photograph and drill fire safes; B and C rated safes and containers up to TL30 classification. Each safe will be opened more tan once allowing for each work group to rotate safes after each opening. The information presented will be useful in preparing for PRP Section L-24, L-33 and STPRP Section S-00. Understanding Alarm Systems (UAS) Audience: Police, Ordinance Managers, Industry Staff Instructor: Robert W. Larson Participants will learn the elements of security technology including system components, detection and response and acquire technical training in sensors, control panels, communications, supervising stations and false alarm prevention to enable salespeople and law enforcement personnel to understand system design. Wiring Methods and Techniques (free evening class 6 pm to 9 pm) Instructor: A comprehensive class on wire and cable installation. This course features lessons in how to overcome the challenges of installing wire inside insulated walls, drilling through fire blocks, and fishing between floors. Hands on demonstrations will teach you methods to improve your installations and save you time.
9 Instructor Bios: Mark Blum, CML,CPS has worked in the locksmithing since Having worked with in distribution and retail locksmith establishments. He has been an active member of ALOA since Mark has taught at the ALOA conventions since 1987 and has also instructed for ASIS, as well as many regional locksmith associations. Mark was the recipient of the 1990 ACE Award which is presented to the outstanding ALOA instructor of the year. John S. Engs is an NFBAA, NTS certified instructor. He has 25 years of Fire Service experience retiring at the rank of Deputy Chief in Since retirement he has been involved as a business owner of Fire Security and Control Systems, based in Widefield CO, where he is the Operations Manager. John holds a vocational teaching credential in Fire Science from the State of California and specializes in Fire Alarm system engineering. He is a member of NFPA and is CBFAA Vice President for the Southern Region. Jim Hancock, CPL began his locksmithing career at the age of 8 in his grandfathers lock shop in Gulfport, Mississippi. He has been working as a locksmith since He currently is the manager of Cothron's Lock & Safe and the lead instructor of Cothron's School of Professional Locksmithing in Austin, Texas. Jim has taught for many regional associations and is an ALOA Certified Instructor who teaches at ALOA conventions and at ACE classes throughout the country. Jim was the recipient of the 2003 ACE Award which is presented to the outstanding ALOA instructor of the year. Robert W. Larson is currently active in the alarm industry as the Training Coordinator for the Colorado Fire & Burglar Alarm Association and a certified Instructor for the National Training School. He is NICET certified in Fire Alarm Systems and holds Denver City and County Supervisor certificates for Low Voltage Electrical Signal and Access Control. Presently employed by Digatron, a systems integrator, he designs and sells access control, closed circuit television, and digital video recording systems. Previous employment included fire alarm system design and sales, resulting in a varied industry background. Past companies included Colorado Telemetry Systems, ADT, J. D. Davis Company, Haxton Security, Protective Monitoring Systems, and Utah County Constables Office. Having started as a service technician, moving into installation, then into project management, design and sales has given Robert an overall perspective of the industry. Setting up a central station with guard response has aided in cross industry opportunities. The crowning success, however, is being married for 28 years to Leanne Sharp Larson and raising 5 kids. Tracy L. Russell has been in the safe industry for over 15 years. She has held several positions with the world s leading safes manufacturer American Security Products. These positions have included Advertising Manager, Sales Administrator and Outside Sales Manager. She developed the AMSEC Sales and Marketing class back in 1995 and has taught hundreds of locksmiths how to make more money on the AMSEC line. Charles Stephenson, CPS is an ALOA certified instructor who has taught at the ALOA conventions as well as regional conventions in the US and Canada. Charles has written many articles for SAVTA and other trade magazines.
10 Instructor Bios (continued) Dennis L. Watanabe, CMST, CML has worked in the lock & safe industry for over 25 years and has instructed at ALOA and SAVTA conventions since Dennis was the 1988 recipient of the Robert Rognon Award presented by ALOA to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the industry in education. Beginning in 1992 he served as chairman of the Safe Technician Proficiency Registration Program Committee (STPRP) which developed the Certified Professional Safe Technician (CPS) and the Certified Master Safe Technician (CMST) certification exams. Ed Woods, CPL, CPS is an automotive locksmithing specialist with many years working in the automotive industry. Ed is a consultant to many manufacturers of automotive locksmithing related tools and equipment and is a Certified ACE Instructor, a long time member of ALOA and has taught automotive locksmithing classes at ALOA conventions and at ACE class events.
