10 SHOW REGULATIONS GOVERNING THE CONDUCT OF EXHIBITIONS, COMPETITIONS AND SHOWS HELD BY THE HORTICULTURAL DEPARTMENT OF THE ROYAL JERSEY AGRICULTURAL & HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY (EXHIBITORS NOT COMPLYING WITH THESE REGULATIONS WILL BE SUBJECT TO DISQUALIFICATION) 1. EXHIBITORS MUST BE MEMBERS OF THE SOCIETY, 10 YEARS OF AGE OR OVER, EXCEPT IN CLASSES WHERE OTHERWISE DEFINED I.E. OPEN CLASSES OR SHOWS. 2. IF THEY WISH TO BE PROVIDED WITH SCHEDULES AND ENTRY FORMS EXHIBITORS MUST SPECIFICALLY ASK TO BE GIVEN COPIES OF THE SAME. 3. THE PLACE OF EXHIBITION WILL BE CLOSED PROMPTLY AT 9PM ON THE DAY BEFORE THE SHOW UNLESS OTHERWISE SPECIFIED. ALL EXHIBITORS MUST HAVE VACATED THE PREMISES BY THAT TIME. THE PLACE OF EXHIBITION MAY BE OPENED EARLY IN THE MORNING OF THE DAY OF THE SHOW BY ARRANGEMENT WITH THE SECRETARY. 9. NO PERSON, NOT BEING AN OFFICIAL, MAY REMAIN IN THE PLACE OF EXHIBITION WHILST THE JUDGES ARE OFFICIALLY ENGAGED. 10. JUDGES ARE ELECTED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE HORTICULTURAL DEPARTMENT OF THE SOCIETY. 11. THE DECISION OF THE JUDGES AS TO THE MERIT OF AN EXHIBIT SHALL BE FINAL. COUNCIL RESERVES THE RIGHT TO REMOVE FOR FURTHER INSPECTION ANY SPECIMENS OR PLANTS WHICH ARE THE SUBJECT OF A DISPUTE. THE DECISION OF THE JUDGES SHALL BE FINAL, EXCEPT IN CASES WHEN, AFTER AN AWARD IS MADE, THE EXHIBIT IS FOUND NOT TO BE IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE SCHEDULE. 10

ALL MATTERS OF PROTEST, DISQUALIFICATION ETC MUST BE LODGED WITH THE SECRETARY NO LATER THAN CLOSE OF THE FIRST DAY OF THE SHOW, WHEN THEY WILL BE DEALT WITH BY AN ADJUDICATOR APPOINTED BY THE COUNCIL WHOSE JUDGEMENT WHICH SHALL BE BASED ON THE RHS CRITERIA SHALL BE FINAL. 13. ONLY ONE ENTRY MAY BE MADE IN EACH CLASS UNLESS THE SCHEDULE PROVIDES OTHERWISE. IF A GIVEN CLASS SHALL ONLY HAVE ONE COMPETING ENTRY IT SHALL NOT RECEIVE A PRIZE OR COMMENDATION UNLESS, IN THE OPINION OF THE JUDGES, IT IS DESERVING OF ONE. 14. ALL PLANTS MUST HAVE BEEN IN THE OWNERSHIP, OF THE EXHIBITOR FOR AT LEAST TWO MONTHS PRIOR TO THE SHOW. ALL CUT FLOWERS, FRUIT AND VEGETABLES MUST HAVE BEEN GROWN BY THE EXHIBITOR OR THEY WILL NOT BE ELIGIBLE TO COMPETE FOR THE PRIZE, EXCEPT WHERE MARKED OTHERWISE IN THE SCHEDULE. 15. AMATEUR. A PERSON WHO, NOT BEING A PROFESSIONAL, EITHER PERSONALLY OR WITH UNPAID OR PAID ASSISTANCE, MAINTAINS A GARDEN OR GROWS PLANTS, FLOWERS, FRUIT OR VEGETABLES FOR PLEASURE AND ENJOYMENT AND NOT FOR HIS OR HER LIVELIHOOD. 16. ALL PLANTS, CUT FLOWERS AND VEGETABLES MUST BE DISTINCT AND NAMED WHERE POSSIBLE AND IN CASES OF EQUALITY PREFERENCE WILL BE GIVEN TO THOSE EXHIBITS WHICH COMPLY WITH THIS REGULATION. SEEDLINGS AND SPORTS MUST BE DESCRIBED AS SUCH. 17. ANYONE ELECTED AS A JUDGE IN A SHOW OR A GARDEN COMPETITION WILL BE UNABLE TO MAKE ENTRIES IN THAT PARTICULAR SHOW OR GARDEN COMPETITION. 18. THREE JUDGES AND A RESERVE JUDGE WILL BE ELECTED FOR THE GARDEN COMPETITION. THE RESERVE JUDGE WILL ACCOMPANY THE JUDGES ON ALL THE JUDGING DAYS. IF ANY COMPETITOR IS RELATED TO, OR EMPLOYED BY, ANY OF THE JUDGES, THE RESERVE JUDGE WILL TAKE HIS OR HER PLACE. 19. ALL ENTRIES SHOULD BE MADE ON THE APPROPRIATE ENTRY FORM. 20. THE COUNCIL SHALL HAVE ENTIRE CONTROL OF ALL EXHIBITS FROM THE TIME OF THEIR STAGING AT THE PLACE OF EXHIBITION UNTIL THE CLOSE OF THE SHOW. 21. ALL PRIZE MONEY SHALL BE PAYABLE TWENTY-ONE DAYS AFTER EACH SHOW AT THE DEPARTMENT S OFFICES. ANY PRIZE MONEY NOT CLAIMED BY 31 ST OF DECEMBER SHALL BE FORFEITED. 22. JUDGING OF FRUIT, VEGETABLES AND FLOWERS WILL BE ACCORDING TO THE RHS GUIDELINES. 23. BEST IN SHOW AND RESERVE BEST IN SHOW WILL ONLY BE AWARDED TO EXHIBITS GROWN BY THE EXHIBITOR I.E FRUIT, VEGETABLES, FLOWERS BUT NOT FLOWER ARRANGING OR CAKES ETC. 11

12 Important notices to exhibitors 1. Closing date for entries is Wednesday 9 th August Exhibitors may only enter one exhibit per class 3. The Summer Flower and Produce Show takes place in the Exhibition Hall 4. Staging of exhibits takes place: 2pm 5.30pm on Thursday 17 th August 9am 9pm on Friday 18 th August 7am 7.45am on Saturday 19 th August 5. Judging will commence on Saturday 19 th August at 8am (please vacate the exhibition hall by 7.45am at the latest. Thank you.) 6. No exhibits are to be removed from the show bench until 5pm on Sunday 20 th August 7. Prize giving the main awards will be presented at 4pm on Sunday 20 th August. 8. An auction of the cakes in the cake classes, will take place after the Prizegiving. Proceeds will be forwarded to Brook in Jersey. 9. Prize certificates will be awarded to 1st, 2nd, 3rd and Commended awards 10. Prize money will only be awarded to first prize unless otherwise specified 11. Please include names with your exhibits where possible. It makes the Show more interesting to visitors if the varieties of flowers, plants, fruit and vegetables are stated. 12. Herbaceous definitions: the following definitions of herbaceous taken from the RHS horticultural show handbook may be useful to exhibitors. Herbaceous perennials: A plant with a non-woody stem which dies down to the ground completely each winter, but which has a rootstock which remains alive throughout several years. For horticultural purposes the word rootstock includes all bulbs and tubers. Herbaceous plants: A plant which does not form a persistent woody stem. It may be annual, biennial or perennial.
