Built in 1935, the home s original interior was dark, with confined spaces. Adding to the house s existing footprint was not an option, so we reorganized the kitchen to better connect it to the surrounding spaces. The principals of Mason Hammer Builders, Inc., Rodney Edmiston & JT Matarangas, P.E., have over 50 years of combined experience building in the SF Bay Area. Mason Hammer frequently partners with the owner and architect very early in the project before the design is even finalized. By joining the team early, Mason Hammer can establish a budget that works for the owner and then work closely with the architect to ensure the budget is maintained irst impressions are important. Indeed, the first thing people notice when they see a home or building is the architecture and its detail. Gentry Home speaks with architectural trim expert Alice Bracken of Architectural Facades to learn more about this fascinating field. Gentry Home: What design elements can an ornamental cast stone company provide? Alice Bracken: Mantles, balustrades, columns, moldings, and fountains are just a few of the things we can produce. But truly, imagination is the only limit. We can provide any number of hardscapes in a variety of finishes. GH: What finishes are available in precast stone? AB: Everything from sandstone and English granite, to French limestone and Italian travertine. GH: What types of precast materials do you work with? AB: Lightweight LCS Stone, GFRC, GRG, and Standard PreCast products. GH: You recently won the Architectural Pre-Cast Association (APA) Award for USC s Cinematic Arts Building in Los Angeles. Do you do commercial projects as well as residential? AB: Yes, you can see our work in various places, including San Francisco s Ritz-Carlton Hotel, the restored Emporium Building in San Francisco, the Sherman Clay Building, the pavilions outside of the San Mateo County History Museum in Redwood City, the Carolands mansion in Hillsborough, as well as several historic buildings in downtown Los Gatos. throughout the remainder of the design and construction. Rodney Edmiston comments, The sooner we are brought into a project, the more successful those projects are. We can use our vast building experience and constructability knowledge to complement the Architect and balance the team. We often provide detailed budgets and schedules when the design is still in the concept stage at no commitment or cost to the owner. We would rather educate the owner at this stage as to what the project might cost than wait until the project is permitted and tell the owner they are over-budget. GH: Why does precast stone work so well on historic renovation projects? AB: With a historic renovation, especially in California, architects and builders must keep earthquake codes in mind and, of course, costs. A lightweight precast stone solution meets both needs beautifully and can be made to be so seamless that you have no idea where the original building begins or ends. GH: How has Architectural Facades become a leader in the field? AB: My husband and partner, Frank, has a Masters of Fine Art in Sculpture and Materials. He studied in Europe and became an expert mold master. When we first started the business, we were one of a handful in the United States able to cast molds and create forms of this caliber. There are still only a few firms able to do this. We can replicate from photographs as well. GH: Do you only take on large projects? AB: No, we can work on projects as small as a single mantle for a homeowner. GH: What s the most important thing for a homeowner to consider when it comes to architectural details and trims? AB: They are often the last things to be added to a project. And they are usually discussed when the homeowners have building fatigue. Unfortunately, that s a terrible mistake. The trims and details are the items that will set the tone for the home or building, and it s important for clients to make sure the level of quality they desire is part of their contractor s original bid, not added as an afterthought.
