1 DOUGLAS INTEREMDIATE / ELEMENTARY SCHOOL MASSACHUSETTS SCHOOL BUILDING AUTHORITY FINAL DESIGN PROGRAM / ADVANCED SCHEMATIC DESIGN SUBMISSION SECTION SIX: PROGRAM DESIGN Security and Visual Access Requirements Instructional Technology Room Data Sheets Preliminary Summary of Ineligible Spaces Massachusetts School Building Authority Project Nº: February 2011 Schematic Design Submission Douglas Intermediate Elementary School 6.0
2 SECURITY AND VISUAL ACCESS REQUIREMENTS The New requires a careful balance between public access, emergency egress and security control. There are four main public entries; three on the first floor and a fourth on the second floor located at the gymnasium lobby. In addition, two emergency exits are located from the gym and a service/emergency exit at the first floor kitchen receiving area. Access Control The location of the New occupies the center of the campus plan and allows for vehicular and pedestrian access to the north, south and west side of the New Elementary School. Buses are dedicated for drop off and pick up from the southern access drive and parent drop-off and pick-up from Gleason Court. Access to the building will be from the two main entrances adjacent to the Administration Wing, supervised by staff personnel. The lower level entry below the gym lobby on the first floor is for emergency egress only and will be locked at all times during school hours. The upper level gym lobby entry will be for staff entry/egress only, emergency egress and off-hour community use. Staff entry will be equipped with electronic locks and proximity readers, whereby users can be tracked, and if need be, deleted via a computerized database. Classroom doors are lockable from the inside during lockdown mode. Visual Security A video monitoring system will be installed at entrances/exits in addition to cameras at the building/site exteriors. The camera system will be monitored at the main secretaryʼs desk and will include a DVR. In addition, the video monitoring signal is also available for real time viewing at the Douglas Police Department. In addition to the video system, the main office will have a physical view of all public entrances and other administrative spaces will have a view of the teacher/gym entrance. 3 INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNOLOGY The mission of the Douglas Public Schools Instructional Technology Department is to support the educational environment through the development, implementation, training, and maintenance of high quality instructional technology resources that foster student-centered instruction in order to meet the needs of all learners within the school district. The Douglas Public Schools is committed to the effective integration of technology to support, enrich, and extend teaching and learning. Through integrated learning experiences, students will develop the technology literacy needed to acquire and manage knowledge, to succeed in school, and to thrive in an ever changing world. All members of our school community will use technology to excel as learners and develop as leaders as they skillfully use technology to access, retrieve, and use information school-wide, community-wide, nationally, and internationally. Classrooms, labs, special program, and school wide technology applications will be designed for smart use and equipped with the appropriate levels of audio/visual capabilities, and each subject area will utilize appropriate technologies to support the specific curriculum objectives. Multiple use and accessible technologies such as SMART boards, plug-and-play capabilities, broadcasting, communication tools, web-based applications, virtual instruction, and specialized software programs will allow to meet individual student needs and interests, as well as enhance the delivery of curriculum, communication, and community connections as students learn in a flexible and efficient manner. Our goal is that technology integration will remain flexible and allow for multiple-use purposes and applications as we continue to meet the changing demands of the community. The students develop capabilities as learners in a multi-media learning environment.
