History of Part One: Before Ladder Harringay Park as it was in 1880s. Copyright British Library Board; Maps The Harringay Ladder was built across land that was once estate of Harringay House, which stood at summit of hill between Allison and Hewitt roads. In 1880 estate was open land with a sewer (shown by blue line) and new River running through it. Before sewer was built, Hornsey had to pay Tottenham to dispose of its sewage in river Lea. In 1869 Hornsey Local Board Surveyor commissioned Baldwin Latham, a consulting engineer, to devise a plan for improving sewerage of parish. The line of Baldwin Latham's Hornsey Outfall Sewer can be seen as Haringey Passage between houses of Ladder. a Fund. Council's Area Assembly scheme for
History of Part Two: Building Ladder The development of area, between 1880 and 1900, was as two housing estates. The Hornsey Station estate, at north end, and Harringay Park estate, at south end. The map shows that streets between Wightman Road and Green Lanes looks like rungs of a Ladder. As streets were developed nothing could be built over sewer that runs under Haringey Passage. Composite map showing development of Harringay Ladder in O.S. Maps courtesy of Hornsey Historical Society a Fund. Council's Area Assembly scheme for
History of Part Three: Passage Up-grading works to sewers, Fairfax Road, Courtesy of Kevin Lincoln, Harringey Council When Harringay Park was sold off and Harringay House pulled down Ladder streets were laid out in ir place. As houses were built space over Hornsey Outfall Sewer became a footpath. Paving first part of passage started in The second section was paved in The sewer had to be upgraded at turn of 19-century, as a result of huge housing development. The picture shows work in early 1900s between Fairfax and Frobisher roads; houses had to be supported to prevent collapse. The number of coats hanging on wall shows job provided work for several men. a Fund. Council's Area Assembly scheme for
History of Part Four: Features of Passage In 1870s, Hornsey Outfall Sewer was built across parkland of Harringay House. The Harringay Passage marks line of this sewer. Fig. 1 (John Hinshelwood, 2007) Fig. 2 (John Hinshelwood, 2007) Fig. 3 (John Hinshelwood, 2007) There are still some old York paving stones (Fig. 1), laid at time of building works. Some original moulded rainwater gullies and drain covers can still be found. Ornate Victorian cast iron sewer vents (Fig. 2), which tower over rooftops, can be seen in three or four sections of passage as evidence of sewer below. The brick surge tower at end of passage (Fig. 3), in Railway Fields, helped prevent sewer overflowing. a Fund. Council's Area Assembly scheme for
History of Part Five: Schools and Passage Fig. 1 (John Hinshelwood, 2007) Fig. 2 (John Hinshelwood, 2007) The Haringey Passage provides a safe walking route above sewer between houses on Ladder. This is particularly valuable for children attending two schools. In 1976 upper floors of building were occupied by North Harringay junior school and ground floor and extensions by infants' school; recently it has amalgamated into a single school. Harringay Board School, opened in 1893 (Fig. 1). From 1903 it was called North Harringay School and it was reorganised as a junior and infants school in South Harringay Council junior and infants schools (Fig. 2), opened in 1904, above (west of) Haringey Passage. Reorganisation in 1934 created a single junior mixed and infants school. Below (east of) Haringey Passage was a new higher elementary and special instruction school for older children, which, in 1934, became a girls grammar school. In 1974 this became infants school leaving juniors in building above Haringey Passage. a Fund. Council's Area Assembly scheme for
