A NOTE ABOUT THIS YEARS COMPETITION Hello Students! Welcome to this year s AIA ATL High School Student Design Competition! Once again, the competition is featuring two separate competitions; the Introduction to the High School Student Design Competition and the High School Student Design Competition. The introductory competition is targeted toward students starting their journey as architects and designers, while the full competition is designed to challenge students who already have a basic understanding of architecture. The introductory competition will be a chance for students to learn about plans, sections, and elevations as well as explore architecture by solving programmatic problems with creativity and ingenuity. This competition program is designed to be challenging and fun, and it asks students to explore design by defining space and creating distinct landmarks in our urban fabric. While we want to make sure the competition stays enjoyable for students Last Year's Winners of both competitions! of all skill levels, we have also noticed the quality of entries submitted every year has gotten better and better. For that reason, we are continuing to offer a more challenging and complex program through the HSSDC! This program will be on par with the difficulty form previous years competitions and will ask students to delve deeper into the realm of architecture and solve complex problems regarding site and programmatic adjacencies. The students entering this competition will have to defend their choices by telling a solid story about what lead them to those decisions. The two competitions offer different awards to the winners, with the introductory competition recognizing design talent at the awards ceremony, and the advanced competition offering scholarships up to $2,000 to the college architecture program of your choice! Now, which competition will you choose to enter? That decision is up to you, your parents and your teachers. The two competitions offer very different experiences, and you should decide based on your skill level and knowledge of drafting and design tools. While the decision is up to you which competition you want to participate in, we ask that you be considerate and enter the competition you truly feel you are qualified for, and don t be afraid to challenge yourself by entering the HSSDC. Thank you, The 2016 High School Student Design Competition Committee Page 2 of 25

ABOUT THE BELTLINE The Atlanta Beltline began as an idea by a Georgia Tech architecture student, Ryan Gravel, in the late 1990 s. The 22-mile historic railroad corridor that surrounded the metro city of Atlanta was no longer in use, creating a valuable, but blighted tract of land in the city. The Beltline started as an idea, but has become one of the largest grassroots campaign of local citizens, designers, arts, and civic leaders to dedicate new development, land use, green space, and sustainable growth to the city. Pedestrian friendly rail transit and 33 miles of multi-use trails will follow this corridor and spur off from it, bringing together 45 intown neighborhoods! This development represents a new vision and framework for Atlanta s growth, centering on public design, transit oriented development, and an unprecedented expansion of park land and public spaces for enjoyment.! Four trail segments and six new or renovated parks are now open for public enjoyment; get out there and check them out! For more information to visit and get involved with the Atlanta Beltline, visit Check this out! These are the key elements that will be developed over the life of the Atlanta Beltline Project: -22 miles of pedestrian friendly rail transit -33 miles of multi-use trails -1,300 acres of parks -5,600 units of affordable housing -1,100 acres of brownfields remediated -$10-20 billion in economic development -30,000 permanent jobs -48,000 one-year construction jobs -Public art -Historic preservation -Sustainability HEY! PAY ATTENTION! THE CONCEPT OF THRESHOLD: A threshold s main purpose is to say to the user Hey! Pay attention! You are entering a new space! Keeping this in mind, think of how thresholds (like a doorway) are used in your everyday life from when you leave your house or your neighborhood to when you arrive at your school campus and enter your high school building. What signifiers, natural and manmade, are placed to get your attention? How do you know you are entering or leaving a new area? Check these Historical Projects out! A torii is a traditional Japanese threshold most commonly found at the entrance to a Shinto shrine, where it symbolically marks the transition from the everyday to the special and sacred. A threshold is an object that defines and separates two different spaces. It can be a large tower or historical gateway or a simpler transition, like changing flooring material from tile to carpet, or road material from paving to cobblestone. These imposing or subtle built elements give cues to the environment and meaning of spaces. These all provide a transition between two spaces or a sense of arrival to a place. Page 5 of 25

AN EXERCISE OF THRESHOLD Think of a daily route or routine that you take; then think of the different thresholds or places you cross. It could be the threshold to your home, school, park, or even the overall city of Atlanta. Obviously, every doorway is a threshold, but think about other types of thresholds you may encounter: the transition to your neighborhood from a busy street, or the ways your high school defines its campus. What are the thresholds that define the place you are? Doorways, porches or front yards, tree canopies and landscaping, low walls or fences, bridges, and towers are all elements that define a threshold at many different scales. Check these Historical Projects out! Porta del Popolo is a gate of the Aurelian Walls in Rome, Italy. In 1562 pope Pius IV commissioned architect Nanni di Baccio Bigio to construct a large gate, the Porta Flaminia, to impress the pilgrims who entered the city via the street Via Flaminia. The Aurelian Walls were much older, fortified walls from Roman times, which encircled the entire city for protection. This street and new gate is the origin of the common phrase All roads lead to Rome! From the Porta del Popolo, three main streets form the major axes of the city. Page 6 of 25

SITE: BELTLINE EASTSIDE TRAIL The site for the beltline threshold is the current end of the East Side trail, where the beltline intersects Irwin Street in Atlanta. The site is the entire intersection, however, there are only three buildable areas, 24 FT by 24 FT in size, located in three of the four corners (the other corner is a service area for the existing building). Your design may cross the road, the trail and/or the sidewalk, but it may only touch the ground in the buildable areas. If you do cross, you must maintain a minimum of a 12 FT clearance over the street, sidewalk or trail so cars, busses, and pedestrians can pass safely under your design. Even though there are slight changes in grade along the site, for the competition, assume the site is flat and level. When designing your threshold, remember that this is an intersection where pedestrians, bikers and cars all interact. Your design should not only be a signifier for the pedestrians that they are entering the Beltline, but also for drivers that an unusual intersection is taking place. You should study how the walkers, bikers and drivers interact and how that interaction can be improved. A good case study is right outside your high school, where busses, drivers, and students interact on a daily basis. How does your school handle this interaction? Is it good or bad? What thresholds does your school use to say to drivers and walkers Hey! Pay Attention!? Are these thresholds effective? Page 7 of 25

PROGRAM BELTLINE THRESHOLD: Check out this Project! Burnham Pavilion Where: Millennium Park, Chicago Designer: Zaha Hadid Architects Not only does the pavilion define the space inside, but also suggests uses and defines the area around it. PROGRAM BREAKDOWN: Design a new permanent structure to welcome people to the Beltline Eastside trail. The iconic structure should act as a threshold to the beltline, transitioning people from the sidewalk to the unique experience that is the Beltline Eastside trail. The threshold structure is meant to provide additional amenities that will help evolve the way that the Eastside trail is used in the future. The design of the structures spaces should be done in a way that welcomes, informs, and assists the users of the Beltline. It must offer an entry point to the Beltline and should create a unique experience for the arrival and departure of its users. It should provide a place to take shelter from inclement weather, an area for bike storage, a pavilion, and a restroom. Safety of pedestrians and bikers should also be considered through the design of a new crosswalk for Irwin Street. An iconic structure that visually and spatially welcomes visitors to the Beltline A covered pavilion of 144sf max this can be anything: coffee shop, Popsicle stand, bike repair, picnic area, outdoor seating, etc. 1 Unisex Bathroom 64 SF please be cognizant of user safety and aesthetic appeal Bike storage for 8 bikes (covered or uncovered) 2 Water Fountains Map/Info of Beltline - 6 linear feet bulletin board style with information prominently located New crosswalk at Irwin Street safety is the biggest concern Check out this Project! Trimo Urban Crash Bike Base Where: Ljubljana, Slovenia Designers: Jorge Lopez Sacristan, Christina Codjambopoulo, Beatriz Gomez Martin, Sara Rebollo From Köln Fachhochschule, Germany Mentor: Prof. Eva-Maria Pape Page 9 of 25

The structure should define the Beltline from the surrounding areas and bring awareness to the intersection of the Beltline and Irwin Street to allow for a safer crossing of pedestrians and bikers. The design should emphasize material, form, and scale. EVALUATION: Creativity and imagination are the major considerations you should give this project. Evaluation of the final projects will be based on the following: o Creativity and Ingenuity of the solution o Practicality of solution o Understanding of the 3 basics drawing types as displayed in the required drawings: Plan, Section and Elevation o Consideration to site and elements o Quality of drawings and presentation materials o Completeness of Submission Drawings Check this Project out! Gateway Arch Where: St. Louis Missouri Designer: Eero Saarinen While much larger in scale than this competition, the Gateway Arch represents an iconic threshold welcoming people to the west. AWARDS: AIA Atlanta will recognize first, second and third place entries, along with honorable mentions, at the Award Ceremony in April. The winners will receive a special honor from AIA Atlanta. PRESENTATION AND SUBMISSION: Student submissions should be presented on 20 x 30 boards. One board should be sufficient, with a maximum of two boards allowed. Portrait or landscape orientation is acceptable, but it is suggested that all boards are presented in the same orientation. The minimum presentation drawings include: Site plan showing the site and surrounding context (just showing the site boundary is strongly discouraged) at 1/8 = 1 scale Floor Plan(s) at 1/4 = 1-0 scale for each level 2 Elevations at 1/4 = 1-0 scale, minimum 1 sections at 1/4 = 1-0 scale, minimum o Cross or Longitudinal Communicate relation of section to context 2 exterior perspectives (consider how material and interaction could be shown in images) Design process images: sketches, concept development ideas, photos of study models Paragraph describing the student's project and design concept (max 300 words), typed (or hand lettered) and attached to the board as part of the presentation Page 10 of 25

All drawings can be either computer generated or hand drawn in fact it is strongly recommended that the students us both mediums to explore their concepts. Hand drawing is a great way to explore ideas fast and begin to understand special relationships, while computer modeling is really good at refining concepts and making them plausible. These are the minimum requirements, but if you need more documents to support your project, feel free to provide them. Consider the additional resources provided in starting to lay out drawings into a presentation. Information from study models and process is also encouraged. RESOURCES AND FURTHER RESEARCH Design Drawing Francis D.K. Ching, 1997 Excellent beginner design book! Covers all the basics, from drawing techniques to presentation layouts. 15 PROGRAM: UNDER THE BRIDGE Interstate 75/85 bisects the city of Atlanta, creating a large boundary between two sides of the city. The interstate often acts as a wall, physically and emotionally cutting off whole sections of the city from the downtown core. Bridges and tunnels crisscross over and under the interstate, but these connections are uninhabitable, unfriendly, and oftentimes dangerous. While striving to connect east and west, the tunnels and bridges crossing the interstate actually further divide the two sides by creating desolate stretches that pedestrians avoid. Your challenge is to take one of these tunnels and turn it into a vibrant, walkable and engaging connector with the purpose of bringing the city together. Part of the challenge will be inhabiting the area under the bridge. Programmatic elements will help bring people to your site and will activate the streetscape. Architecturally, your challenge will be to create an engaging street, bringing a sense of purpose and safety to the area. When designing and laying out the program, think about what makes a walkable neighborhood and street and try to bring that feeling under the bridge. Program Breakdown Housing Micro-Housing Units SF Each Kitchen Bathroom Bedroom Living Café Small Kitchen 100 SF Outdoor Seating Area 250 SF Outdoor Stage w/ Seating for 100 People 100 SF Stage Public Restroom Men s and Women s 200 SF Each Retail Space for 4 Stores 500 SF/each Optional: Sculptural element/art installation to activate the underside of the bridge and street Optional elements, depending on design: Stairs Elevator Elevator equipment room 2/ 200 SF/level 100 SF/level 100 SF Total: +/- 10,000 SF Note: Parking is not a requirement for the project and the residents or retail do not need parking spaces. Page 15 of 25

Program Considerations What is a Micro Unit? A micro unit is a new trend in housing, especially in dense urban areas. A micro unit is a fully functioning apartment in less than 350 SF. Each unit should have a full kitchen, bathroom and bedroom/living room. Due to their tight size, spaces have to be used wisely and efficiently, often with areas having multiple uses. The full kitchen must have a sink, stove and refrigerator, and the bathroom must have a sink, toilet and shower or tub. The Micro Unit Apartment Complex Part of the challenge will be arranging these units on the site to create logical circulation paths for the residents and to allow light into the units. Consider how one gets to their apartment, not only the entrance to the unit but also the entrance to the complex. A typical residential floor is feet high. If you decide to stack the units, you must also consider access to the units and include an elevator and stairs. Some questions to consider when designing the complex: How are the units separate from the other programs? How are they connected? Who do you think will live in these units? Who is coming to the other programs? Check Out This Project: Micro Apartment Szymon Hanczar on-hanczar-13-square-metre-microapartment-wroclaw-poland/ Check Out This Project: Mixed Use Developments Mixed use is an exciting trend in design that creates developments that combine housing with retail, office or restaurants. Having these multiple uses create walkable communities that encourage active lifestyles and diverse communities. However, it creates its own challenges by making the designer balance the needs of residential and commercial tenets in tight spaces. Think about how these components will react to each other and make strong design decisions based on that reaction. Are the retail components and residential units separate? How do you separate them? Ponce City Market Where: Atlanta, Georgia Developer: Jamestown Properties Are there opportunities to create a live/work environment? You are not required to define what stores will be filling the retail spaces, but think about the needs of a retailer when located the stores on your site. Page 16 of 25

Other Considerations LIGHT: Light is important to any inhabited space, however, your site has very little access to it. Are there more ways to get more natural light into the space? What are the best ways to use the little light that you do have access to? Furthermore, what is the importance of light? What does natural light provide a user? STEET SCAPE: The site is along a major street in Atlanta, and has a rich history. Think about how to activate the street under the bridge to make a more walkable neighborhood and to connect the two sides of Edgewood Avenue. ADJACENCIES: What will be the best location for the café and outdoor stage? How will this interact with the housing component? Feel free to get creative with how you organize your spaces, but remember to back them up with strong reasoning and precedence. 18 SITE: Edgewood Avenue Under The Bridge The site is the interstitial space beneath the intersection of I-75/85 and Edgewood Ave. This area of Atlanta has a rich and vibrant history, with historic landmarks and entertainment venues within walking distance. Edgewood Avenue crosses under the connector near down town Atlanta. This underpass is known to be a large stretch of vacant and uninhabitable land, and your challenge is to change those perceptions. This site can be a major connection to downtown Atlanta from the growing Edgewood and Old 4 th Ward districts, and has in fact seen millions of dollars in investments with the introduction of the street car. Site History: There is also a sad and significant history to this site. In the 1950 s, Edgewood and Auburn Avenues were considered the economic heart of the African American Community in Atlanta, and many would argue, the whole South East. This vibrant community was thriving in South, where racism was widespread and segregation was the law. When the interstate was proposed in Atlanta, it was routed around the core of Atlanta, away from the affluent white neighborhoods, and into and through the black and poorer neighborhoods. I-75/85 became a symbol of the division in Atlanta, cutting off and dividing a thriving Black neighborhood. As designers and architects we must be aware of our actions and how they can effect communities, and whenever possible come up with solutions to create spaces of healing, tolerance and togetherness. Your project should be aware of this history and work to create a binding space to connect and heal a community torn apart by the bridge. Page 18 of 25

Site Requirements: You cannot remove or relocate the structure for the highway, but use it to inform your design choices. The site is 270 long, 27 feet high, and 100 long (from the sidewalk along Edgewood Ave to the second row of structural columns.) There are existing sheds for the tram system at the east end of the site, these sheds should be removed. Page 19 of 25

Site Analysis Site analysis is one of the most important parts of any project, and can make a big influence on your final design! So, what is site analysis and how do I go about it? First, site analysis is a way of looking at the site and finding relationships between your site (the boundary line that your building must fit into) and the surrounding areas. Common relationships to explore include the following: Site Access How do people arrive at the site (where is the front entrance)? How to people leave (where is the exit)? What modes of transportation are they taking (walking, biking, driving, bus )? Views What can be seen from the site (internal)? Are there any views that should be highlighted? What can my building be seen from (external)? Where will my building s focal points should be facing? Environmental Does my site get lots of sun? Rain? Snow? Wind? Are there lots of trees? Animals? Birds? How does my building respond to the environment? Other Considerations for site: o Density of surrounding areas o Population demographics o Styles and materials of surrounding buildings o Uses of surrounding buildings (public vs. private) o Historic uses for the site and area To begin exploring these ideas, start by diagraming the site. A diagram is a type of drawing used to communicate information. The drawings above highlighting the sites, streets and beltline locations are all considered diagrams. We suggest starting with a map of the site and surrounding areas and drawing lines to represent access points, or views, or solar angles, or whatever else you think will influence your project. You might find by doing this that the views are boring from your site and are actually not important to your building, or you might find the exact opposite. This part is all about exploring ideas and building a case to support the decisions you will make when designing your building. Check Out This Project: The High Line Park, New York By James Corner- landscape architect Page 20 of 25

DESIGN PROCESS This competition is a schematic design competition, looking to hone your design skills and get you thinking conceptually about architecture and design. But what does schematic mean? The schematic design phase is the first phase of any architecture project, where you explore ideas, have fun and get messy. We are looking for creative solutions to the problem that are plausible and engaging. That does not mean you have to have all of the details figured out. Work hard to develop a concept and an idea that drives your project, figure out how the different parts respond to that concept, and then sell that concept to the jury. Here are some key things to consider for this level of development: Space adjacencies and site layout how are all of your parts working together to create a cohesive experience? Understanding site constraints, opportunities and connections Sizes, shapes and volumes of spaces interior and exterior Massing and form of your project Concept the main idea driving your project. Check out our jury video from last year s competition to get a good of idea how concepts can influence your design o Aiaatl.org/outreach Winning HSSDC entries will have a strong concept statement. These design concepts can range from a general idea of how the building should integrate within its site to an external concept that is as whimsical as an artistic expression. Design concepts can also be rooted in exploration of building systems, like structure or sustainability. As you develop your project and design concept, you should be considering your final presentation by documenting your sketches and the design changes that occurred throughout your process. Submissions should include both a written paragraph describing their project and a series of drawings or images that explains the design process and concept for the project. Take some time to put pen to paper and sketch your ideas, and don t forget to include these drawings in your final presentation; the jurors love seeing how an idea and concept came to life and how you explored your concept from the beginning. Schematic design process drawings by Rem Koolhaas at OMA, Frank Ghery and Bjarke Ingles Group Page 21 of 25

Other Considerations Universal Design, Sustainability, and Planning Universal Design (Accessibility) One of the major considerations for any project is making it readily accessible and usable by all persons with disabilities. It is very wise to consider how people will maneuver and enjoy being a part of your project. Here are a few questions to keep in mind throughout your design process: How does one access the different parts of your site? Is there elevator access to every level? Is there ramp access? Which type of access best suits your design? Are there parts of your building that are not accessible? Why or why not? What cues throughout the project would help a person with a disability navigate around? These are big questions and big concerns, but do not get too lost in these issues. Take some time to consider them and show the jury your ideas and your thought process. It doesn t have to be perfect, but acknowledging that these issues are real and that you have tried to solve these challenges will go a long way in the jury s mind. This is an example of an accessible route that allows access to all of the main functions of a building. For more information visit Page 22 of 25

Sustainability Sustainability is one of the key issues that define this generation. When building today, we must think about tomorrow and the impact we are having on the environment. So, when designing your project consider how it is positively or negatively impacting the city and its inhabitants. Consider some of the following aspects of sustainability for your project: How much energy does the building use? o Buildings account for 36% of total energy use in the US and 65% of electricity consumption! o How does your building use energy wisely? Does your project incorporate renewable energy? How does your building address solar heat? Does it use systems to shade, or does it harvest the energy to heat the building? What strategies does your building use to minimize water use? Rain water collection? Green spaces? Take some time to consider the potential sustainable features of your project. Perhaps sustainability could be a driving concept for your design. Urban Planning and Design One of the key factors of the site is its proximity to the MARTA rail line, to Centennial Olympic Park, and of course to Downtown Atlanta. But how does your building connect to these places? Take a moment to consider some of the following urban design challenges: How does your building relate to the ground and the surrounding areas? Does your project encourage walking or driving or the use of mass transit? Or does it do all three? Or two? Where are the visitors coming from and how do they get there? What is the experience like approaching the building from the street level? How does the project encourage smart community growth and interaction? Will people enjoy being at your site? Urban planning is complicated but it could be a great way to begin to develop your concept, and it should have some major influence on your design and the decisions that you make. Page 23 of 25

Reading and Resource List Yes is More Bjarke Ingles Group This architecture comic book was put together by one of the most forward-thinking design firms in the world. Combining great visuals and a fun style, it makes it a great way to explore architecture from form to function. Image of the City Kevin Lynch Kevin Lynch changed urban planning forever when he devised his five elements of the city: path, edge, district, node and landmarks. He argues that every major city is made up of these elements, and that successfully using these is the key to a great urban environment. Rural Studio, directed by Samuel Mockbee Samuel Mockbee devised his rural studio as a way to get architecture students to give back to communities in need. Every semester students from Auburn University travel to the poorest counties in the country and build buildings out of non-traditional materials. They are literally changing lives one structure at a time. A Pattern Language - Christopher Alexander, Sara Ishikawa, Murray Silverstein This book takes a look at the home and the patterns and designs that can be used to solve design problems in many varying circumstances.
