OLAC is unique: it was designed for you. Situated less than two hours by air from all of Europe s capitals (via Saint-Exupéry International Airport), Lyon stands at the crossroads of Europe. World-renowned for its policies on urban lighting, in 2002 Lyon set up an international organisation of Cities of Light, LUCI, the purpose of which was to promote the benefits of urban lighting amongst its member cities and partners. It was therefore only logical that Philips would build its Outdoor Lighting Application Centre (OLAC) a few kilometres from Lyon, close to the heart of Europe s City of Light. For Philips, lighting is both an emotional and a physical phenomenon which, ideally, should be tested in a real-life situation and at full scale.this was the thinking which led to the construction of the largest lighting demonstration centre in the world. OLAC is unique, in terms of both its d esign and its size. Measuring 47,000 square metres, it provides lighting facilities and technical teams to help you create a variety of outdoor lighting scenarios. You can light a road, a residential area or a town centre, and all of this in real time and at full scale! 3 BROCHURE OLAC UK.qxd 24/09/03 10:53 Page 5 Take your seat at the heart of the light The real magic behind this journey into outdoor lighting is that it all happens indoors! You don t need to be outside to see full-scale lighting. At OLAC, everything is designed to allow each person to participate from within the building itself. How does it work? At the heart of this gigantic lighting demonstration is a circular construction 30 metres in diameter. All the materials selected for the construction (aluminium, steel, glass, concrete and stone) were chosen for their night-time neutrality. Everything was done to ensure that the star of the show was light. Built on an imaginary junction between a road, a town centre square and a residential area, the Centre comprises three large observation rooms, each accommodating 25 people, around a central reception area. This reception area is where the OLAC team meets and talks with our visitors. It is in this 22-metre high room, built beneath an atrium window, that you will be able to discover the latest innovations and designs created by Philips Lighting. In the three observation rooms you will be able to sit comfortably as you become, in turn, a motorist, a pedestrian and a town mayor. The main purpose of the demonstrations, of course, is to work with you to find the best lighting solutions for a given situation - and the precise computer-aided control over all OLAC s lighting equipment means that your scenarios will become reality before your very eyes, whether you are on the road, in a residential area, or on the town hall square. 4 5

4 BROCHURE OLAC UK.qxd 24/09/03 10:53 Page 7 Devise safer and more economical road lighting To appreciate the visibility conditions that road users experience as realistically as possible, the observation room puts you in the driver s seat; as if you were behind the wheel of your own car.this enables you to see for yourself the effects of different lighting configurations, as they unfold before your eyes. By testing different types and strengths of light sources, and varying the selection of optics and the height and spacing of luminaires, taking into account the influence of the road surface, you can clearly see the results of various illumination choices over a distance of 250 metres of trial road in real time. The main goal of this demonstration is to show the effects of appropriate road lighting. Motorists have a better appreciation of distances, improved visual comfort and better visibility, all of which will reduce the risk of accidents. The second aim is to work with you to determine what would be the ideal illumination for your roads and streets.you choose the luminaire, the lamp and the optics and you can see the result immediately. And, what s more, we will work with you to find the best way to optimise the cost of this installation, through the use of remote management and dimming systems. 5 BROCHURE OLAC UK.qxd 24/09/03 10:53 Page 9 Create user-friendly residential areas Imagine a residential area with a street where you could install luminaires of your choice, positioned as you choose. In the second demonstration area, you become a pedestrian who lives in the centre of this area. The magic of OLAC means that you can control the lighting on this street. But here you can forget everything you learned during the road lighting demonstration! You can t illuminate a street, which is a living space by both day and night, in the same way as you would a road. Motorists, pedestrians and children all inhabit this space. The lighting requirements are therefore completely different.to be able to understand these different needs, you will construct the best possible lighting for this 80 metre street, lined with houses built with materials and in architectural styles found all over Europe. To do so, you have at your disposal luminaires that show the effects of various combinations of lamps and light fittings at different heights (up to 5 metres) using various optics and reflectors. In this way, you can experiment with the different elements of your lighting configuration and see the results for yourself. 8 9

6 BROCHURE OLAC UK.qxd 24/09/03 10:53 Page 11 Give your town a new night-time identity With its ability to redefine the night-time urban landscape, lighting can play an essential role in humanising town centres.the embellishment of urban areas creates an atmosphere in which people not only feel safer but also rediscover a sense of identity which makes them proud to belong to that community. This is exactly what we are offering you when you visit OLAC: the chance to use lighting to embellish and humanise the central square of a small town. In this third demonstration area, you will see a paved square, a public building (which can be changed into a theatre, town hall, tax office or hospital), a commercial district with shops and a café, a statue and, finally, a green space with a fountain and old stonework. You can control the 2,500 square metres from the demonstration room and you can define the lighting solutions that are most appropriate for your town. To help you, we have installed floodlights, ground-recessed lighting units, luminaires, fibre optics and LEDs, all computer-controlled from the demonstration room. You are offered several scenarios in real time and all you have to do is choose the one that best fits the character of your town
