3 The Seascape, July/August 2011 Page 3 President s Message Andrew Tuckman, President, andrew.tuckman@visionrecycling.com As I write this president s message, the waves roll in on Cowell s Beach in Santa Cruz only 100 feet from where I sit. My laptop is set up in a banquet room overlooking the Wharf in preparation for our Beautification Awards ceremony only 2 hours from now. It will function as the slideshow driver and playlist for the evening s music. At 4:45, the prep work is done, the room is set and I have time before our members arrive to knock this one out. Behind me, Barbara Olsen and Wendy Sakoda place flowers in the center pieces, Regan Barry our event chairperson takes care of last minute loose ends and Dream Inn staff scurry around the room making sure we haven t forgotten anything. I enjoy this time of the night when I can collect my thoughts, reflect on the year, watch others around me and ponder the night. Many people rallied for this evening and I am grateful for their efforts. I m sure it will be a memorable night with a lot of laughs, interesting landscape photos and amazing food. Contractors entered jobs in 15 Categories as well as the overall Sweepstakes awards. This year we even have an Excelsior award for a first time entry in the Central Coast Chapter. Unfortunately, most of our chapter s activities happen in the first half of the year and culminate with the Beautification Awards. This means monthly board meetings, weekly to-do lists and phone calls will drop off to a minimum until the early fall. We do have several things to look forward to over the next five months, though: the Summer Extravaganza in Oxnard, the Golf Outing in September and a holiday mixer at the end of the year. Then planning for continued on page 9

7 The Seascape, July/August 2011 Page 7 John Deere Landscapes New CLCA Water Management Certification Program Partner by Barbara Landrith, CLCA Outreach Specialist The California Landscape Contractors Association is pleased to welcome John Deere Landscapes as a new Water Management Certification Program Partner. CLCA s Water Management Certification Program helps green industry professionals meet the need to reduce landscape water usage by meeting a water budget. This program is unique because participants not only take a written test, they are also required to manage at least one property to a water budget for one year to achieve certification and to submit an irrigation system audit. Participants are then required to continue to maintain a property to a water budget to continue their certification. CLCA s Water Management Certification carries the WaterSense Label from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and is also approved for continuing education units by PLANET and the Landscape Architecture Continuing Education System. We are pleased that John Deere Landscapes has chosen to join us as a new program partner, said David Silva, Program Manager for CLCA s Water Management Certification Program. This Certification Program would not be possible without the strong support of our program partners and we are excited to welcome John Deere Landscapes. We are also grateful to our current partners Ewing Irrigation Products, Toro Company, Hunter Industries and Horizon Irrigation. Launched in 2006, WaterSense is an EPA-sponsored partnership program that seeks to protect the future of our nation s water supply by promoting water efficiency and enhancing the market for waterefficient products, programs and practices. In order to become a WaterSense irrigation partner, professionals in the industry must first become certified through a WaterSense labeled certification program. CLCA s Water Management Certification Program offers tests and trainings throughout the state. For more information or to register for the Certification Program, please contact David Silva (916) , davidsilva@clca.org. or go to: clca.us/water/.

9 The Seascape, July/August 2011 Page 9 President s Message cont d 2012 begins and already our board is committed to getting a head start so we can learn from our mistakes and celebrate the successes. One thing we learned over the last few months is that event planning has to happen sooner. Not only that, but budgets have to be set in stone, committees elected and database lists organized before the holidays in December. Many felt rushed this year, hoped for more and said, Next year will be better. With the advent of modern technology, the chapter has to be able to compile lists and get electronically connected. Communication in the 21st century depends on it. Whether it s Facebook, Linkedin, Constant Contact or our good, old phone tree, consistent and clever communication will be the saving grace as we move forward. Chris Elliot has been instrumental in communicating Partners For Success Oak Level Ewing Irrigation...(888) Hunter Industries...(925) John Deere Landscapes..(408) Redwood Level Grass Farm...(800) LCIS (Landscape Contractors Insurance Services)...(800) x540 Maple Level Greenstreak Landscaping..(408) via phone and it s something that should never be forgotten. Someone at the state level recently said that a president s term should be two years, with the first being a learning process before settling into the next. It can only get better and, with your support anything is possible. Please look for 2012 planning meetings later this fall and early winter. The board has clear goals for the upcoming year and wants to make 2012 a tremendous success. If anyone would like to help out please me over the next few months. Change is inevitable and success is sure to follow. Have a great summer!
