10 REASONS YOUR or BLUE BOX WAS LEFT AT THE CURB Check your garbage and recycling for the ORANGE non-compliance sticker to find one of the following reasons why... Garbage bags exceeding the 20kg (44lb) limit Unacceptable material for collection including hazardous waste, medical waste and bulky items Garbage loosely placed in garbage can and not in bags Furniture of any kind is not accepted Broken glass and sharp objects must be placed in a container/ box - not in garbage bags BLUE BOXES Blue box exceeding the 20kg (44lb) limit Oil or antifreeze containers were found in your blue box Blue boxes are not sorted into separate bins for paper and for containers Cardboard must be broken down to 2 x2 Recycling cardboard can be a little tricky there s a reason why you need to break down, flatten and tie cardboard into bundles. Oversized cardboard can t be collected because it doesn t fit into the collection vehicle s side bucket. Also boxes that are not broken down cost more money to collect as they take up unnecessary space in the truck Recycling trucks don t compact materials like garbage trucks because materials have to be sorted to make them ready for end markets By flattening and bundling your boxes before they go into the truck, we get more materials into the truck to help control costs and recycle more materials 14 JULY 2018 SUN MON TUES WEDNES THURS FRI SATUR Canada Day Street Dance Join us on Canada Day for family fun activities and fireworks at dusk at 1 Scotland Street or help support recreation programs in Dutton Dunwich by attending our Annual Street Dance! 401 HWY to 23

12 WHERE DOES YOUR AND GO? Garbage collected at the curb is directed to the City of Toronto Green Lane Landfill Site. Recycling collected goes to the City of London Material Recovery Facility (MRF). For a video on what happens to your recycling check out: The image to the right is of the City of London s Material Recovery Facility (MRF). The MRF is where the recycling trucks take your Blue Box recyclables to be further sorted and shipped to processing mills (paper mills, steel mills, etc.). This image shows all the processes your recycling goes through once it has been picked and delivered to the MRF. For a video on the operations of the facility titled Tour of London s Recycling Centre visit U0nALM&feature=youtu.be Or visit Garbage-Recycling/Recycling/Pages/Tours.aspx for information on tours. 10 SEPTEMBER 2018 SUN MON TUES WEDNES THURS FRI SATUR THERE IS LITERALLY A TON OF PLASTIC FOR EVERY PERSON ON EARTH! More than 9 BILLION TONS of plastic has been produced since 1950, and the vast majority is still around Labour Day Seven billion tons is stuck on Earth as garbage in landfills, or pollution in the environment, including deep oceans, where it has been discovered in the mouths of whales and the bellies of dead seabirds that mistook it for food. 401 HWY to 27
13 SPRING/FALL YARD WASTE WINTER COLLECTION If you are unable to take your yard waste to the landfill site, please be patient with curbside pickup. In addition to your regular garbage, only 6 bags of yard waste will be picked up per week. Help to reduce our garbage tonnage. Bring your yard waste to the Dutton Dunwich Landfill Site. Sometimes winter weather will affect curbside collection services. Snow, ice and wind can be treacherous for all drivers on the road. Curbside collection is rarely cancelled, but may be postponed. We will collect your materials as soon as we are safely able to do so. SPECIAL WINTER PICK UP POINTS (Nov 1 Mar 31) In the winter months the roads are often a hazard for the truck drivers in Duttona please bring your garbage to the following pick up point: 7418 Coyne Road CURBSIDE YARD WASTE PICKUP = MORE TONNAGE = INCREASED COST TO TAXPAYERS Bringing yard waste to the Landfill Site = PRICELESS! 8 OCTOBER 2018 SUN MON TUES WEDNES THURS FRI SATUR Thanksgiving Boo Bash Halloween Come to our spook-tacular event at the Community Centre at 1 Scotland Street for some Halloween games, activities, treats and costume contest! 401 HWY to 29
14 DON Ts & PICK UP DO s Don t put broken glass and sharp metal objects in regular garbage. Place in a sealed and clearly labelled cardboard box for garbage collectors. This will contain the glass if it breaks at collection. Don t place needles in the garbage. Contact the local pharmacy for a biohazard container or visit healthunit.com/sharps-disposal OR healthsteward.ca for safe disposal information. These materials will not be collected at curbside: -scrap metal (propane tanks, BBQs, bike frames etc.) -construction & renovation materials (drywall, wood) -appliances (fridges, stoves, microwaves) -electronics (TVs, monitors, computers etc.) -loose garbage, tires, CFL light bulbs and tubes -furniture of any kind Put Your garbage and recycling at the curb by 7AM but no earlier than 6PM the night before. Use plastic garbage bags. Maximum weight for bags and blue bins is 20kg (44lbs). Rinse out containers before putting them in your blue box. Residue left in them can attract animals, bees and wasps posing a health and safety risk to drivers. Break down cardboard to no larger than 2 x2 and tie into bundles if possible. Ensure your recyclables are separated into paper and containers. Don t place garbage bags and blue bins on top of snow banks. Clear an area in the snow or leave them in your driveway to prevent them from falling into the streets 6 NOVEMBER 2018 SUN MON TUES WEDNES THURS FRI SATUR Is your jack-o-lantern still scaring the neighbours?
