6 Heat Recovery Ventilation Systemair Residential Ventilation Systems Heat Recovery Ventilation (MVHR) Those wishing to build or carry out renovations today are faced with a challenge. The current building regulations demand better insulated and air-tight buildings in order to protect our resources and the environment. Air-tight and well insulated buildings prevent natural ventilation through the buildings component parts, which could result in the formation of mould through damp stagnant stale air, which is detrimental to both the building structure and the health of the occupants. The solution is a Systemair ventilation system. For over 35 years, at Systemair, we have been making energy efficient clean air a reality and our office in Oxford has specialised in residential systems for over 28 years. We offer our customers a system which lets you enjoy fresh air around the clock, without having to lift a finger. This is because the air exchange occurs automatically and importantly, it is regulated. Opening the windows for a quick airing out is no longer necessary. Not only is this very convenient, you also save both money and energy in the process. Why? Because the heating energy stays where it s supposed to in the house. This is especially the case with heat recovery ventilation. In this process, the stale air is extracted from the wet rooms (Kitchen, bathroom, WC etc.) and is used for tempering the cool fresh air before it is supplied to the living areas (Lounge, bedrooms, study etc.) making unsightly trickle vents, that cause draughts a thing of the past. Along with used stale air, our systems also expel excessive air moisture. This way, you can enjoy a pleasant environment without condensation and mould. Not only does this protect the basic fabric of the building, it protects the occupants health as well. Just as beneficial to their well-being are our high-quality pollen and dust filters. Even people with allergies can now breathe a sigh of relief. This is how your controlled room ventilation works: The extract fan within the ventilation system extracts air from the wet rooms (kitchen, bathroom, WC) on a continual basis. A heat exchanger extracts the heat from waste air first. At the same time, fresh air from outside is taken in and filtered. If necessary, the heat exchanger pre-tempers the cool outside air using the heat from the waste air. The fresh air then flows through the vents into the rooms. From there, the supply air flows to the living areas via the landing and hallway and into the kitchen bathroom and WC. This way, the two different air streams don t mix. The result being an optimum room environment. Benefits Fresh filtered air 24/7 Excellent heat recovery efficiency High quality filtration Low energy motors Automatic summer by-pass Quiet running User friendly controls Easy to install & maintain
Systemair Residential Ventilation Systems Heat Recovery Ventilation 7 Your choice of Heat Recovery Systems How it works Rotary wheel heat exchangers: VSR & VTR units Counterflow heat exchanger: VTC units Heat exchanging up to 86% The structure of the rotary wheel heat exchanger and continuous rotation between hot and cold air flows heats the exhaust air wheel, which transfers this heat to the cold supply air in winter time. This effect can be reversed in summer time by transferring the colder exhaust air on to the incoming outside warm air. This provides a cooling effect on warmer days. Humidity transfer with a condensation rotor The thermal wheel heat exchanger consists of pure aluminium which transfers humidity exactly when condensate appears on the exhaust air side and is absorbed by the outside air. High temperature differences can reach humidity return values up to 60%. In winter time our rotary wheel heat exchanger transfers humidity when required which minimises dry air. Rinse chamber Some outside air flow is led on the exhaust air side to produce a rinsing effect. This reduces the transmission of exhaust air to a minimum by carryover. For correct operation of the rinse chamber, a pressure gradient of min. 200 Pa on supply and exhaust air is necessary. Frost protection A condensate drain is not required in residential construction. Furthermore, the rotor does not freeze because of the transmission of condensate down to -30 C by a little exhaust air surplus. A frost protection for heat exchangers is not needed. Heat exchanging up to 90% Counterflow heat exchangers lead air flows through parallel plates arranged in a row. On the opposite side supply and exhaust air alternates. Warm air flow transfers energy via the plate to the cold air flow. Humidity transfer is not possible In winter time, condensate has to be drained into a waste water pipe. The drain should always have either a water trap or running trap to prevent stale odours from coming back up from the drain system. Separated Air Streams Supply and exhaust air are totally separated from each other to keep the supply air clean. Frost protection The higher the efficiency of an exchanger, the more condensate drops out at high temperature differences. The efficiency also influences the temperature when frost protection is necessary for the exchanger. This concerns outside temperatures when condensate starts freezing. For high quality counter cross-flow heat exchangers with an efficiency of 90 %, this can already begin at -3 C. To ensure frost protection and to avoid pulling out energy from the exchanger, outside air can be pre-heated, the supply air can be set back or the outside air can be bypassed at the heat exchanger via a bypass flap. The missing heat transfer by setting back the supply air fan or during bypass of the supply air has then to be replaced by the heating system. Automatic Summer by-pass The integral controls automatically switch the heat exchanger on & off for rotary wheel or opens a bypass damper for counterflow which helps to keep your property cooler in the summer months. Conclusion: A ventilation unit with heat recovery provides a healthy, comfortable indoor environment with filtered supply air to the dwelling. Furthermore, the energy saving potential meets the future requirements. The decision for a unit with heat recovery allows combining comfort and energy savings. Counterflow heat exchanger vs. rotary wheel heat exchanger: a rotary wheel heat exchanger is the best choice for single-family houses or single residential units. It is more effective and creates a better indoor climate plus there is no requirement for a condensate drain to overflow. These rotary wheel units also allow for automatic summer by-pass during warmer months. To supply more than one residential unit, a counterflow heat exchanger is the right choice. The required energy for frost protection reduces the efficiency of this exchanger. Example of Heat Recovery Unit with 80% Efficiency:- Indoor room air at 21 C is extracted back through the Heat Recovery Unit where it exchanges its heat with the outdoor incoming air. Therefore if the outside air temperature was -1 C, the supply air into the room would be warmed to around 15 C. The integral heater inside the heat recovery unit can be used to boost this temperature further, if required.

Systemair Residential Ventilation Systems Geo Thermal Heat Exchanger 19 GEO - Geothermal heat exchanger unit Ground Source Heat Pump Benefits With 8W energy, you can gain up to 1.5 kw. Can be used in combination with any HRV unit up to 300m³/h. Why choose a ground heat exchanger? In the winter, domestic heat recovery units switch to a frost protection mode at low temperatures outside. This usually means that the supply fan slows down, causing an imbalance between the supply and exhaust air through the heat recovery unit. Another possibility is that a (pre-) heater is turned on, which usually consumes 1 to 2kW of energy. In the summer, at high external temperatures, the supply air from outside can be warmer than the air inside the house. Thus, this warm supply air can heat the house while this is not preferable. The horizontal ground heat exchanger GEO can offer a solution for the problems mentioned above, using a minimum of energy. Why choose a GEO? Increases the efficiency of the heat recovery unit. Has its own control, allowing energy consumption only when needed. Has an A label-ec pump and a G4 filter for the protection of the heat exchanger. Is easy to install, all in 1 case (pump, control, sensors, filters, filling and venting unit, battery, gauge, vent valve, volume meter, and pressure vessel). Has a right / left version in 1 unit and the air to the heat recovery unit can be mounted both on the top and on the side. Thanks to relatively thin duct (40 mm), it is easy to install. Is a hygienic and attractive solution. Is easy to clean: condensation develops in the Aquacom, which is led to the sewer through the condensate drain. GEO has its own control which can be used in combination with any type of heat recovery unit. This control will start the highly energy efficient pump of the GEO unit at specific set outside temperatures, causing the Glycol mixture to flow through the pipework. The temperature of the Glycol mixture, will approach the temperature of the soil and will transfer its energy to the supply air of the heat recovery system through the battery of the GEO unit. By using GEO, the efficiency of the heat recovery can be increased. For example: In an average house with the Heat recovery unit at speed 2 (+/- 250m³/h) in summer the GEO will cool down the outside temperature from 30 C to 20 C. In winter the GEO will heat up the outside temperature from -10 C to 2,5 C.
20 Extra s for your MVHR system Systemair Residential Ventilation Systems More than just a Heat Recovery System Make everyday more comfortable by adding cooling Cooling options With summer becoming warmer the tricky question on how to cool your property without installing an independent air conditioning system arises. The answer is to add Systemair Comfort Cooling to your Heat Recovery Ventilation system (dependant on unit type). Our Comfort Cooling unit will cool and dehumidify the incoming ambient air by 8-12 C in summer. Depending on the amount of heat gain in the building and the amount of air provided by the ventilation system the room temperature will be affected accordingly. The system operates with 100% fresh air, it does not recycle air. (This is not air conditioning). How it works The system consists of an internal cooling coil, connected by pipework to an outdoor condensing unit which rejects the heat removed to the atmosphere by utilizing the vapour compression cycle. The external condenser pumps refrigerant to the internal cooling coil where gas absorbs as much heat as it can from the air passing over it. The refrigerant is then pulled back to the condensing unit and gives up the heat to the atmosphere. The refrigerant is transferred through copper pipework which is fully insulated. This cycle continues until the set temperature is reached. This is called a DX system (direct expansion). We can also offer independent split Air Conditioning DX units suitable for cooling your conservatory Features With Turbo mode the unit will run with the ultra high speed for 20 minutes to reach the set-point temperature quickly. Hydrophilic aluminium fins of the indoor units improve the heat exchange efficiency in cooling and heating mode. Environmentally friendly refrigerant R410A. Infrared remote control SYSCONTROL RM 35 included. SYSPLIT WALL INV are the most affordable and reliable solution for residential premises. Highly efficient inverter control provides accurate regulation of the room temperature. Stylish appearance with big LCD showing all main settings of the air conditioner. Outdoor units are equipped with valve protection cover. Self-diagnosis function continuously monitors the operation of the air conditioner and protects the system. The controls are user friendly requiring little adjustment once set and as the air comes through the ventilation system there are no additional registers in the ceiling.
Systemair Residential Ventilation Systems Exhaust fan unit 21
22 Central Extraction Systems Systemair Residential Ventilation Systems Mechanical Extract Ventilation (MEV) Cheaper than installing individual extractor fans A central extract fan unit continuously extracts the stale air from the kitchen, bathroom, utility and WC through a ductwork system which leads to the outside via the roof, soffit or wall grille/ vent. (Only one break out point required unlike individual fans that require a break out for each). Fresh air enters the property via trickle vents in the window frames and ensures continuous airflow throughout the property. The fan units can be located in a cookerhood, a cupboard at high level or a roof void. The system is controlled by the cookerhood or via a separate control panel. The low energy motors ensure a cost effective solution. Benefits Only one unit Only one electrical point Low energy motors No overrun timers Controls condensation Quiet running User friendly controls Easy to install
Systemair Residential Ventilation Systems Central Vacuum Systems 23 Make household chores fun again Villavent Central Vacuum Cleaner You will no doubt want to keep up with the times when it comes to household chores to ensure the greatest convenience possible - so why not install our Villavent Central Vacuum Cleaner! With this system, all you have to do is insert a suction hose into a socket in the wall and they can get started straight away. No more pulling around a clunky machine, which often likes to get caught on valuable pieces of furniture, leaving behind ugly marks. And no need to carry heavy items from floor to floor in order to vacuum clean. Household chores really can be this easy. Incredible suction. Incredibly quiet. This helps our customers maintain a healthy room climate with clean air. For one, its very strong suction guarantees maximum cleaning of furniture, floor and rugs. For the other, sucked in dirt is sped directly into the vacuum cleaner bag of the central device. This can be mounted in a utility room like the basement or garage. This means that the vacuum cleaner is extremely quiet and you don t have any annoying background noise in the rooms of your house. Additionally, the central device blows the waste air directly to the outside. This ensures that dust doesn t swirl up in your utility room - meaning that time is saved when cleaning and those with allergies don t have to worry. Equipped with a Hepa filter, the vacuum cleaner is even suited to passive houses whose building envelope cannot be cut through by air discharge openings. The long, flexible suction hose comes equipped with a telescopic pipe and floor nozzle. This means you can work in ease. Maintenance of the central vacuum cleaner is generally limited to regular cleaning of the suction casing and replacing the filter bags/emptying the canister as required.
24 Building Regulations Systemair Residential Ventilation Systems Building Regulations - Part F Ventilation 2010 The revised Building Regulations Part F (Means of Ventilation) and Part L (Conservation of Fuel and Power) documents came into effect from 1st October 2010 superseding all previous revisions. Ventilation within a home helps with the dilution and removal of pollutants as well as reducing humidity and condensation. Their combined removal creates a healthier environment and helps asthma and allergy sufferers. At the same time, the changes to the regulations reflect research linking air pollutants and condensation to effects on health (particularly asthma) and damage to the building fabric (mould). Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery - System 4 MVHR is a whole house ventilation system that supplies and extracts air on a continuous basis as per the rate in table 5.1b and with a facility to be boosted as necessary. The MVHR unit can be installed in the loft space, cupboard, utility or plant room. Ductwork coming off the unit running through the voids in the property then supplies fresh filtered air to the habitable rooms (lounge, dining, bedrooms etc.) and extracts the stale air from the wet areas (bathroom, kitchen shower etc.). Trickle ventilation in window frames is not required. Manual boost controls must be located near to the rooms being served to ensure correct operation of MVHR systems. Table 5.1a Extract Ventilation rates Room Intermittent Extract Continuous Extract Minimum Rate Minimum High Rate Minimum Low Rate Kitchen 30l/s adjacent to hob; 13l/s or 60 60l/s elsewhere Total extract rate should be at least the whole Utility room 30l/s 8l/s dwelling ventilation rate given in Table 5.1b Bathroom 15l/s 8l/s Sanitary accommodation 6l/s 6l/s Table 5.1b Whole dwelling Ventilation rates Number of bedrooms in dwelling Whole dwelling ventilation rate a,b (l/s) Notes: a. In addition, the minimum ventilation rate should not be less than 0.3l/s per m2 of internal floor area. This should be used as the default value. If a greater level of occupancy is expected add 4l/s per occupant. Example: Three bedroom house, kitchen/diner, living room, bathroom, WC, ensuite with a floor area of 110m². Whole property ventilation rate (normal) calculate this from table 5.1.b i.e. 33l/s based on 110m² x 0.3 l/s = 33l/s Extract Airflow l/s Normal l/s Boost l/s Kitchen Bathroom 6 8 WC 4 6 Ensuite 6 8 Utility 6 8 Total 33l/s 43l/s Supply Airflow l/s Normal l/s Boost l/s Living Room 7 9 Kitchen/Diner 7 9 Bedroom Bedroom Bedroom Study 4 5 Total 33l/s 43l/s As buildings become more airtight, with lower levels of infiltration, Part F considers the conditions for properties with infiltration rates tighter than 5m3/h.m2 (as a default) and those over 5. It essentially means there are now two design permeability rates and as a result airflow rates will differ based on the chosen design.

26 Frequently Asked Questions Systemair Residential Ventilation Systems FAQ s & Testimonials Q. Do I need trickle vents and extractor fans? A. No. The MVHR takes care of all the ventilation requirements for the property meeting 2010 building regulations part F. Q. How often do I need to change the filters? A. We recommend the filters are changed once a year to maintain optimum performance. For convenience the controller will also indicate when the filters need replacing. Q. At what point in the build do I need to consider installing the MVHR system? A. We recommend the ducting is installed at first fix and if possible be the first trade in at this stage. However to get to this point the design process we offer would ideally have started 6-8 weeks prior. The more time available to complete the design, the better as this will reduce the risk of any delays on site. Q. Does the MVHR unit have summer bypass? A. Yes, this is automatically operated on warmer days/months and the point at which the feature is engaged is fully controlled via the control panel to meet your personal needs. Q. Do I need a cookerhood if I install one of your MVHR systems? A. Yes you do as the air will need to be filtered to prevent grease build up within the MVHR system ductwork and heat exchanger. We recommend a re-circulating cookerhood as this filters the air but keeps the heat within the kitchen environment. Our extract point(s) in the kitchen will then utilise this heat within the MVHR system. Q. Do we need a register/valve in every room? A. No, there are no registers in the hallway, landing or vestibule areas as these are neither wet areas with stale air or living areas where peope reside for any length of time. These spaces are transit areas allowing air to move from one room to another. Q. Can I have MVHR with a log burner? A. Yes, but the log burner will require its own fresh air supply and in accordance with the manufacturers instructions. Q. What heating system should I use? A. You can use any type of heating system, gas boiler, heat pump or direct electric as a primary heating source. SAVE VTR 150/K - Heat Recovery Ventilation Unit with integrated cookerhood available in white & stainless steel.
